Greenblatt appeared on The View on Tuesday after Goldberg came under fire for saying that the Holocaust wasnt about race during the shows Monday broadcast. The ADL head told Goldberg and her co-hosts on Tuesday that the Holocaust was a singular catastrophe that was motivated by a racialized anti-Semitism. Greenblatt also tweeted that Goldberg was a long-time ally of the Jewish community and that her apology is very much welcome.

If this guy has a good track record for this sort of take, and both the wider Jewish community and people of good standing within said community can talk it out and accept her apology, then I think AOC's comments here are perfectly appropriate.

With that being said, I don't have a read on this Greenblatt guy. I do recognise the Anti-Defamation League, who have a positive reputation as far as I know, but I fully admit I could be wrong on this.

I'm coming at this from the first post - have there been any statements in regards to the reputation of Johnathan Greenblatt that calls his acceptance of Whoopi Goldberg's apology into question? Is there still a significant furore in the Jewish community beyond this key figure of the ADL offering his thoughts on Whoopi Goldberg's apology?

Because I think ultimately, it does come down to the community affected to come to some kind of concensus on the issue or come to enough of an impasse to say "it's complicated and no singular right answer should probably be set in stone". There's allyship, and there's speaking over the community with which you claim allyship with.

Coming at this from the first post, that's.my opinion. I'm probably gonna read back from this post beyond to get more of a read on the situation.

Also, if I'm getting the timeline correct, she made her controversial remarks on the show, then went on Colbert, then apologized on the View, THEN was suspended? Or was she suspended before she apologized?

Even Gus Johnson's apology wasn't that bad and he wasn't talking about the literal holocaust

No one (sane) is claiming she said she hates Jews.

She did however downplay the holocaust, say people of the same skin color can't be racist to each other, doubled down on it repeatedly and then refused to take it back on her apology

She apologized for your "misunderstanding " and the harm she caused herself. Not Jews, or Germans or victims of racist murders, herself. The harm she caused herself.

Race isn't exactly a simple absolute thing, it is entirely subjective. People will have different ideas about what race means. While the correct view here is to look at race from a Nazi perspective(at which point it becomes clear that the stuff they were doing was definitely about race, everything was about eliminating rival races and purifying their own), someone who applies their own view on race instead could reasonably come to the conclusion that it wasn't about race.

You'll need to quote the words that you interpret as "downplaying". I've just watched the video you linked to, and I'm not hearing what you seem to be hearing to make you think that.

She's insistent that because of their historical experiences black people define race differently, i.e. primarily by skin colour, and that from a black perspective, Jews are white and not a race apart; and she's clearly not backing down from that position. But there's no hint that she's denying the Nazis targeted the Jews for extermination specifically because of their Jewishness: she says the issue was "ethnicity" (rather than race), which forced the Nazis to work harder to identify members of the chosen target group. (Which might have been true in Germany but not in Poland or the USSR, because of the higher degree of segregation; but I doubt Goldberg knew that.) Nor did she question the numbers, nor the monstrosity of the killings.

Discourse on race in America today is framed overwhelmingly in terms of black and white. Why is it so surprising that Goldberg might crudely define race, and racism, by skin colour alone, seeing as it's what most other people do?

She's 60 something. I found a way to know what the fucking Holocaust is about and I'm half her age. We really have taken tolerance too far in society. "I didn't know" has always been a terrible, bullshit excuse. If you truly know nothing about something, then be silent. Is she also ignorant on the concept of humility and shutting up?

Why should she? Based on this topic it seems like the only thing she did wrong was say the holocaust was horrible and nazis were evil in a non-typical way. Like how is having a firm view on what does and doesnt count as race and viewing the world through that lens a bad thing when it still leads to the right conclusions?
