America is technically still owned by the British

Arguably, that would only apply to the 13 colonies, since all other territorial gains didn't occur under British authority. So the Louisiana Territory would still be French, California/Texas/Florida/etc would still be Spanish, and so on.

Though if we're going to dismiss "theft = ownership" and "possession is 9/10ths of the law" as binding principles, then the British wouldn't hold any claim over anything in America at all because it would all still belong to Native Americans.

We're all basically just squatters living in someone else's house.

You can set things on fire for an impractical amount of time, and occasionally explode if someone shoots your tank.

It's a major reason why flamethrowers never really became a major weapon in wars - they burn through their fuel way too quickly, and are potentially dangerous to their operators.

If you desperately need additional uses, here:

Seminars often are sales pitches for crap, yeah.

This is the main reason why I never go to those sorts of things. The point of the free meal is to get you into a position where they can aggressively fast-talk you into a sales pitch, and it's almost always for something you'd never, ever consider buying unless you were pressured into it (hence why they have to try and badger you into it).

I'm stubborn enough that they're never really going to sell me on their product no matter how hard sell it is, so the whole thing is just a massive waste of both our time. And I'm not so hard up for money that a free meal (which will probably be bad) is motivation enough for me to waste hours of my life listening to a sales pitch I have no interest in.

It seems to me that, 99% of the time, this scenario can only really occur if you already have the pet, and the SO is coming into the relationship after. In which case, I can't imagine actually developing a strong enough relationship with the SO before they made the ultimatum where I'd ever willingly side with them. Part of the process of falling in love/committing to someone in the first place would involve learning whether or not they're happy with/willing to tolerate pets (and by pets, I specifically mean dogs).

Though I have a visceral negative reaction to ultimatums and emotional blackmail in general, even when pets aren't involved. My instinctive response to "Either [x] goes or I go!" is "Well then don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out, asshole." I view that sort of mentality as a blatant lack of respect, and it's a strong red flag for a toxic relationship.

I've actually ended relationships over emotional blackmail in the past. Part of why I'm happy in my current relationship is because we both have more respect for each other than that and don't pull that sort of shit with each other.

Or the author of the article doesn't view Bi as a real thing that some people think for reasons that are beyond me.

It actually used to be a thing that a lot of homosexuals would deny that bisexuality existed at all, because from their point of view, it weakened their own socio-political position. The logic was that anyone who identified as bi was either gay and too afraid to fully come out, or were gay and hadn't yet fully accepted their own sexual identity so were still clinging to the delusion of being at least partially straight. Some gay people could be pretty petty and abusive towards people claiming to be bisexual ("Just come out already, you coward!").

There's been a tradition of whatever new letter gets added to the LGBTQIBBQ+ acronym tends to generate a bit of backlash at first. There were gay and bi people who objected to trans being included because they saw it as a different issue entirely and thought it weakened and trivialized their own struggles. Some gay people disagree with the idea of gender fluidity or "gender queer" as definitions. And so on.

It's not a universal backlash, and it tends to die down over time (especially once the next controversy kicks in), but it's definitely an undercurrent that runs through LGBT+ discussions.

I'd say it also depends on their attitude towards you - if they're perfectly fine with you hanging out with other people, it's a very different story than if they're strongly against you doing it yourself.

Like most things in life, it's highly situational.

British TV is weird.

The funny thing is, Rowan Atkinson's previous show is the one most British people remember him for (while Americans tend to think Mr. Bean as his definitive project), and that only lasted 24 episodes.

Blackadder - which is regularly voted the #2 British sitcom/comedy in history whenever the British vote in TV polls - was a 4 season show, where each season consisted of 6 episodes, and each season was technically about a completely different character, set in a completely different time period, and with stories that were designed to fit the period (meaning each season has a different style/tone). In a way, it's almost like four separate but related shows.

Oh, and it also had a Christmas special parodying A Christmas Carol. Which may be my favorite Christmas-related show of any kind.

I'll take Jubilee's powers. You don't get much lower tier than Jubilee.

It's been implied her powers are actually incredibly potent, she's just too young to use them effectively, and she doesn't really push herself to improve them as she gets older.

Keep in mind, what she's actually doing is creating plasma. While she mostly uses it to generate "fireworks", she's also shown the ability to blow things up (similar to Boom Boom).

She can theoretically generate miniature nuclear explosions with her power if she ever achieves her full potential.

She's sort of similar to Iceman in that respect - where he has what seems to be a fairly lame, simple power, but in-universe they've explicitly described him as being an Omega-level mutant (ie, the kind that can potentially destroy entire planets). But because he never exerts himself he never achieves that level of power on a regular basis, and usually only shows signs of it when telepaths force his brain to work at full efficiency.

There's a distinct likelihood that fewer people died (both in the end of WWII as well as in its aftermath) than would have if the bomb had never been invented.

The depression comes from problems I can't solve, so no amount of counseling can solve it.

My point was more that you might be assuming it's based on your life situation, when it's actually biochemical depression caused by factors that have literally nothing to do with the circumstances of your life experience.

It's why I suggested a psychiatrist rather than a therapist. They're the ones who can prescribe drugs.

If nothing else, a psychiatrist can potentially rule out biological factors definitively. Without that you're basically just self-diagnosing and might be wrong. And you might even be in a scenario where you're blaming your life issues for your depression, when it's actually your depression that's contributing to those situations in the first place.

It's also worth noting that some other biological issues can simulate depression symptoms as well (like diabetes, which can lead to general fatigue and apathy).

And even beyond that, even if non-psychopharmacological therapy/counseling can't solve every problem, it can help you develop better coping strategies to deal with the stress from those problems, giving you a healthier mental state. So it's not necessarily a good idea to completely dismiss basic counseling regardless.

You might want to consider seeing a psychiatrist. What you're describing (lack of energy, motivation, and disinterest in the world around you) sounds like textbook symptoms of depression.

If that is the case, simply trying to engage in hobbies won't stop you from being miserable all the time, because you'll still have the depression. But treating the depression may help you to start becoming interested in things again.

Saying that like it's a bad thing when it simply accurately reflects what a stupid pandering mess comic books are in the first place sounds extremely childish.

The problem is, there was a time when comics told interesting stories. Sadly, that time was decades ago. Which is why so many comic movies keep stealing their story ideas from storylines from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Because post-90s almost everything is shit.

Watching the films go from being interesting and fun to starting to adopt more and more of the bullshit that killed people's interest in comic books in the first place is just watching the same slow death over again for a second time. Younger people today sort of have the impression that the comic film bubble is never going to burst, but enough burnout and shitty films can kill pretty much any genre eventually.

The comic book industry used to be able to sell millions of copies of a given issue, now they're lucky if they can sell 100k for the most popular titles (and closer to 20k for most of the rest). It's not impossible that we're going to see a similar slow decline in comic films until they stop making enough money to justify the studios making them. Just like any number of other film genres that used to be crazy popular but that don't draw a damned dime these days.

On one hand, I think at a certain price point, it would work.

On the other hand, if someone is at that price point, they probably wouldn't need to do this.

The thing is, that's kind of a complex little spiral.

There are absolutely women who would hook up with a dude solely because he's rich. But the sort of women you're most likely to fish with that sort of bait aren't the sort of women you'd actually want to have a long-term relationship with, because you're always going to be worrying about if she's going to figure out a way to take most of it away from you. So it's in your best interest to mostly flash your wealth for one-night stands and short casual hook ups. But the sort of women who would be interested in this sort of thing also tend to be smart enough to be aware of this, and would likely be trying to figure out ways to exploit your every weakness.

So you're basically ending up in a scenario where everyone involved is a mercenary looking to take advantage of the other person (just in different ways, for different rewards). And at that point, why not just go fuck a prostitute? At least there you can probably find a woman who has pride in her work and is just professional about the whole thing.
