No problem! I do of course recommend watching the show in order so as to not spoil anything (as it's just a fantastic show the whole way through, and pretty short overall) but obviously I don't expect a 4-season show to be binged for the series

Yeah, shows are probably the trickiest to do for this series. I still think back sometimes to how I flubbed Over the Garden Wall in the first year by not watching enough of it and pretty much completely missing the point of the series. I will definitely avoid the season finale though, if I end up liking the show enough I usually continue it in my spare time anyway!

The games of Kitty Horrorshow are like the gold-standard to me now on how to do indie horror games.

Ice Nine Kills' The Silver Scream is one of my favorite and most played albums now.

Elizabeth Smyth's Bogeyman I think is a masterpiece of interactive fiction.

I've replayed From Next Door, the Junji Ito inspired RPG maker game, several times now. Similarly, this series introduced me to World of Horror, which I think is one of the best horror games ever made.

To rattle off some others there's Blood-C, Starkid musicals, There Existed an Addiction to Blood, and probably others I'm forgetting.

Submitted for your approval, welcome back to the Cabinet of Curiosities known as Snake Ranks Anything Horror Related. Every September through October (and a little beyond), the crypt of chills and thrills is cracked open again to let the otherwise abominable and indescribable out for a little blood-soaked and gore-filled fun. And it is you, the people of Board 8, that bring those demons to me to be judged and distributed accordingly, for 6 years running now, using my vast and expert knowledge of all things horror! The weather may not feel autumnal yet, but this is a feeling not just accompanied by a cool breeze and colorful leaves, but one deep in your very soul. And it's a feeling I will never get tired of.

Rules and Guidelines
1. You may nominate up to 5 horror-related subjects. It can be anything from films to games, to horror tropes and concepts, to the horrors of real-life. If it's horror-adjacent you can nominate it. As usual, don't worry if something counts as horror or not. Nominate what you feel like nominating and I will decide if it fits. I'm extremely lenient and loose with my definition of horror.

2. Do not nominate anything from prior years. I will check too so if you do nominate something from a previous year by accident I will let you know.

Fun fact: this is the only NIN album I own. And I don't even like it that much. Everything here seems pretty dated, even if I can see some seeds of NIN's vastly superior future work. It was very kind of the Jingle Cats to lend their voices to "The Only Time", one of the most grating songs of the 80s industrial dance scene by a mile. Reznor's lyrics try to be cerebral and intelligent like an LCD Soundsystem but end up coming across as corny, edgelord nonsense ("While the devil wants to fuck me in the back of his car", that was a particularly hilarious highlight for me). The beats and production are repetitive, which I know is somewhat of the point, but when combined with the lyrics I was looking at the time waiting for this album to be over. It's not all bad though; Sanctified and Head Like a Hole both hit like any other hard rockers of the 80s, and the latter especially is where the repetitiveness works extremely well in the song's favor. It drives in the message and gives you something to remember it by when it's over. Something I Can Never Have is a decent enough slow-jam, that feels like a prototype for Hurt. Overall, I think NIN are a fantastic band, but this album is forgettable to me and I don't even enjoy it in short bursts to be perfectly honest.

Keep that same energy over 50 Shades selling 100+ million copies and the trilogy doing over 1 billion at the box office. Women shouldnt like Magic Mike or Jason Momoa, either, since liking the opposite sex should be frowned upon and all. Wouldnt want that, no sir. Back to the days of puritanicalism.

I have no problem with men liking them, I just don't think it adds much to the story personally.

I always thought the only pretty-well-received movie was Advent Children. Never heard of the ones mentioned.

I mean by critics AND fans alike. I don't think AC was well received by critics. Werewolves Within is a comedy horror film that came out this year actually and is based on a somewhat obscure VR game by Ubisoft (the film is at 86/81 at RT). Detention is a Taiwanese film that came out in 2019 and based on the game by Red Candle Games (you might know them better for the whole China/Devotion Winnie the Pooh thing). Detention has an 85% on RT and was even nominated for 12 awards, including best feature, at the Golden Horse Awards.

On the one hand, it's an achievement to have this many characters, plot threads, and themes all on display and more or less wrapped decently well. On the other, it's something I never want to sit through ever again. It's all in the presentation here; the story is way too bloated for its own good, with cutscene length that far surpasses the limit of what a video game SHOULD be doing with its story. The humor here is egregious, and Kojima went too far with making Johnny somewhat of a main character here. It clashes completely and totally with the otherwise very serious "war economy" commentary the game is going for. CODECS are so boring in this. The bosses' feel more like eye candy and veer wildly on the side of bad taste and are at worst, exploitative. When this game hits though, it can be genuinely amazing. Raiden vs. Vamp, the revisit to Shadow Moses, pretty much every scene with Ocelot, the Microwave hallway, beautifully pushing the punishing limits of button mashing that it established way back in MGS2. Like it or not, you have to respect the creativity and passion behind what is essentially the final chapter in the MGS saga, showcasing the best and worst parts of the series in a beautifully flawed total chimera of a game.

One of the very pinnacles of video game storytelling. It's on a whole different level of presentation from even its own series, presenting its events as one part historical Cold War period piece, one part James Bond spy thriller, and one part supernatural horror. The cast is simply immaculate. Naked Snake is one of the best protagonists in gaming, as his character transforms into the villain we know him as later in the timeline, and we get to spend time with all of his different aspects - his quiet somewhat social awkwardness, geekiness when it comes to stuff like firearms, a small romantic side, and of course the intense inner turmoil he feels have to go up against his former mentor and teacher. The CODEC cast is wild and wacky, and the game actually gives you reasons to call them besides gameplay purposes. Cobra Unit is the best villain gang in the series, both embracing the stupidity of arbitrary video game superpowers, but also giving you genuine reasons to care as to just exactly why they became the way they are. Beyond that, The Boss is also one of the best female characters in all of gaming, embracing sexuality, femininity, and motherhood in a way that's honest & realistic, with complex idealistic goals and motivations way outside of the scope of most antagonists you can find elsewhere. One more character that bears a much needed specific mention is Ocelot, seeing his relationship and rivalry grow with Snake over the course of the game is such an incredibly engaging arc.

MGS3 benefits greatly from being somewhat distant from the rest of the series. Don't get me wrong; it's just an arms-length away, but after the paranoid super-conspiracy and grandiose agenda of MGS2, MGS3 feels defiantly quaint and intimate in its setting and story. There's still mentions of concepts like the Philosophers' Legacy, but it feels natural interspersed with the delicacy of cold war politics. Speaking of that, what is effectively the game's cold open, the Virtuous Mission, brilliantly sets you up for a false start, while perfectly establishing the game's rules, major players, and stakes. Where MGS2 was divisive in its disparate chapters on purpose, MGS3 instead uses it in a more straight-forward matter, re-contextualizing Snake's character instead of switching to another completely. While the thematic reasoning may be stronger in MGS2, here it makes for a more satisfying continuation. Continuing with the cold war theming, a big part of this game is deception. Snake is deceived at almost every step by almost every other character, and there's always a sense that you can't even trust your own allies on the other side of the radio. EVA and Ocelot both play up the spy angles especially, but it's The Boss' ultimate deception that really drives this theme home. It's used to convey a sense of powerlessness, Snake is the typical one man army Green Beret badass sent to the save day for the United States, but it's not all it's cracked up to be: despite all his technical skill, Snake becomes bloodied, bruised, and disfigured, confronted with the violent actions he has wrought by The Sorrow, and eventually, even his interior emotions become as wrecked and ugly as what his outward appearance has become. At the end of the day, there's still glory and celebration, Snake is welcomed back as any war hero would be, but the victory is hollow, and Snake irrevocably changed for the worst, forever.

One final theme I'd like to touch on briefly is time. This is a big part of The Boss' ideals, and not only is it an interesting message, knowing just how Naked Snake/Big Boss' arc ends gives it a whole new meaning than the face value. There are always new heroes, new villains, new ideas to rebel against or join with, and it all ends up the same in the end.

MGS3 is the perfect combination of goofy Metal Gearness mixed with some of the deepest characters gaming has ever given us. It's a story capable of providing fantastic action thrills, but also tearing down the very ideas that makes up those action thrills. It's an emotional roller coaster and one of those rare games where you feel changed by finishing it.

There have only been like 2 well-received video game movies (Werewolves Within & Detention) but there have been several more well-received or even critically acclaimed movie-based video games (Goldeneye, Sweet Home, X-Men Origins Wolverine, Spider-Man 2, The Punisher '05, Alien series games). It a question of sheer numbers though as there have been far more movie video games made than vice versa.
