It definitely gets better as it goes along. Everything surrounding Aloy is pretty well done and interesting, and the game's higher concept, lofty sci-fi ideas are compelling and creepy especially as it unfolds in survival horror-like files. Damn, does this game have a serious problem with characters though. Every character besides Aloy is a bland slate dumping exposition at you left and right, with a half-baked (this is an understatement) choice system that shouldn't have even been in the game. I especially couldn't give one crap about Erend's story quests with its underwhelming and piss easy anti-climatic antagonist. The background of this game works tremendously, but the actual script and execution is one I hope sees touching up in the sequel.

Zelda's creepiest and most effective brush with darkness to date. A marked improvement over Ocarina, showing much more restraint in building a dreadful atmosphere, and executing masterful tension without relying heavily on the typical tropes that make up a Zelda experience. There's a profound sadness to the whole storyline, and you personally witness the daily struggles of citizens while you toil your way to an uncertain future. Thematically, Zelda has never been this exciting or emotionally connective with the player before or since.

So... I kind of like this album I think? Don't get me wrong, the singles on here are insanely good, with some all time classics of the entire rock genre. "All These Things That I've Done" is my favorite Killers song, with the "I've Got Soul" refrain being one of the most fun things to sing along with ever. "Mr. Brightside" is instantly catchy and teeters on that right blend of emotion where the band rocks their heart out in cathartic joy but you also catch the whispers of sadness, fear, and broken-heartedness throughout Flowers' immaculate, melodramatic, almost operatic vocal performance. Where the album truly falters is in its non-single tracks; they are serviceable, and actually stand out each in their unique way, but there's nothing particularly interesting I latch on to and want to listen to again and again, and that's a huge knock against it for me. Bouncing variously between a blend of alt. rock, new wave, and post-punk, I highly respect the album's sonic cohesion but I think the lyrics and actual instrumentation on the non-singles lacks significant depth and meaning. At its worst, in songs like "Everything Will Be Alright" & "Andy, You're a Star", The Killers are downright yawn-worthy.

I like The Killers; I wouldn't consider them a fave band by any stretch, but at the same time, they've definitely released some songs I would call favorites. I think they show marked improvement after Hot Fuss, and I enjoy them most when they lean more into heartland rock which fits them like a glove. Also, their Christmas songs are the fuckin' best.

Oh Man this is a good one. First time through, it's probably a ten out of ten. But now, I have a lot of trouble setting it apart from all the Telltale games that came after it. I see the flaws in its storytelling, it's choice-based system. The story it does tell is solid, it's emotionally grounded and quite effective at making you feel like this guardian in a crapsack world, as you struggle to find any shred of joy you can in the midst of disaster & death everywhere. A lot of the game's magic comes from the fact that you feel like your choices matter, even if they ultimately don't. I can't help but notice now how characters you save have little to no dialogue after their events and typically die shortly after anyway. In some weird fucked up way though, this system somehow reinforces the game's themes that much more. Life is uncertain, zombies or not, and the game rendering your choices ultimately meaningless is surprisingly bleak, tragic, & darkly macabre. Was this the intention? Probably not, but it works as intended nonetheless. So I applaud it regardless, as an intense work of horror & dramatic fiction, with solid character archetypes that do the job of forcing your on-the-fly reactions, while still seeing the very real flaws for what they are.

I do think you have a point too. It is obviously very different, but I think it's better to embrace it otherwise rock will just fade into relative obscurity again and again.

In terms of mainstream success though, I don't think it matters. All you need are these hugely popular artists causing a chain reaction; if kids & teens love this stuff and it looks like they do, then they'll probably dig into similar artists from the past and support other contemporary or more "traditional" rock groups.

I think that changed this year, coupled with a build-up from last year. I think the biggest name in music right now is Olivia Rodrigo and Good 4 U smashed records while basically being a mid-00s pop punk track. Couple that with artists like MGK, Jxdn, Willow, Mod Sun, etc. bringing a full on pop-punk revival back and I think we have the biggest movement in rock in a long time. Plus, you have Taylor Swift absolutely crushing album sales with indie & alt. rock influences.

I'll reiterate a lot of what I said in my horror rankings last year: I don't like the game's cast, tonal issues, and I believe the dialogue is too wooden and clunky to be enjoyable, but I do enjoy several of the game's wacky premises and overall it has an undeniably great sense of mystery and progression.

Incredibly moving and affecting, one of the best ensembles casts in gaming period, every single character in this feels like a real person, from Pearson all the way up to Arthur and Dutch. The voice acting is off-the-chain amazing, with a genuine Western presentation, with gorgeous cinematography and shot composition that rivals the biggest of blockbuster films. But, in its devotion to classic Western cinema, it also surpasses it in many ways, embracing the best parts of the genre whilst rejecting, subverting, and ultimately rallying against its ugliest parts. The story feels like a multi-part fantasy epic in scope, but in reality small and human, as Arthur and later John do what they need to to survive as families and friends are torn apart by strife, conflict, and greed. Few games rival RDR2's symbolism, ambitions, character development, and tiny details that truly make up one of the best narrative experiences in fiction.

It's about as good as you're gonna get for 1987. It's greatest asset is its ability to lean into every fantasy trope imaginable, while still making something decidedly Final Fantasy. I actually enjoy the time loop aspect of Garland and feel it's decently original even.

I think the difference is that Hybrid Theory has a negative association with nu metal, whereas Hot Fuss opened millions of listeners to alt rock that is still beloved today.

That's been shifting gradually over the past year or so though. All the most popular emo rappers of today seem to love and are very influenced by the nu metal period. And you have artists like Bring Me the Horizon, Rina Sawayama, and Poppy updated nu metal for the modern generation.
