I told my company to take out 8% or so of my paycheck and put it in a 401(k). 8 Years later, I had 10s of thousands of dollars in it, and I withdrew half of it to put towards a house. 3 years later, the house had appreciated in price by about $30K so I sold that house and bought a bigger one. Now my house is worth $400K and I have maybe 40% equity in it after 3 years.Which is awesome if you have a job that you know youre gonna be at for a long time! I wish that my previous (and also first, and for a long time: only) job had a 401k. My new job does but I dont even know how long Ill be at this one. Eight years ago, I had to get an operation that was going to put me out of work for 7 - 8 weeks. SO many people were like oh man youre gonna be so bored, youll be counting down the days till you can come back to work etc. and let me tell you there was not a single second that I didnt enjoy not having to go to work that made me say gee, you know what Id rather be doing? Working To be fair, I utterly despised my job back then. I mean, I already didnt love it (shitty retail grocery job) but around that time we were going through management changes and I was being pushed super hard (which is what led to my injury which is probably what made me even happier to not be at that shithole). Then about a year later I was out for three months because of a back issue, and, again, despite the pain, I was still just happy to not be wasting my life away working. But even now that I have a good job, Id still SO much rather be chilling at home, seeing friends, going out doing stuff, etc. than going to work. I understand everyone needs to work, and of course Ill continue to do so and do the best job I can. But I dont define myself by my job. I would stop working if I could without question. But at this point Id definitely settle for a shorter week or shorter days --- Bah weep grannah weep ni ni bon |
