It should be a basic human right to make the decision for yourself to work or not work under conditions of a potentially fatal global pandemic. This continues to be left out of these conversations. Me, working for a first world nation, should have the basic right to say "I'm not putting myself in the direct line of a pandemic, and i'm not risking passing it to my family."

People are way too hung up on the extra money thing. How about people caring about their own safety? And the safety of their loved ones?

I've worked all through this, I have had no professional break since COVID began. Again, you entirely leave out the pandemic and say "Just get a job."

There is a PANDEMIC going on. If I have the choice between working some shitty $8 an hour job and killing my grandparents as as result, or have the government, that I have paid into since I was 16, float me a bit so I can get life taken care of without the risk of losing home and family, I think i'm gonna lower the risk to my family. Again, I haven't had a single day off since COVID, I've worked through all of it, but this shit where people are constantly being shamed for taking advantage of a government program and not killing their family members in the process is ridiculous.

Yeah it really sucked knowing I'd be making more if I got laid off. That's not the case anymore (largish raise about 3 months ago) but I'd l love a break from the workplace and time to work on myself while collecting UI.

My job is essential though so we would never stop having work. I work in a group home with adults with disabilities. It's been a bad year trying to explain the pandemic to this population.

People dont want to work for shit wages. The cost of living MUST be brought down drastically and pay needs to increase. Dont even bother raising the wages until we put caps on the cost of living (rent, insurance, etc.) because they will just salivate and raise the rates.

This is regular unemployment right now. Many people dont have jobs to go back to. Casino I worked at is just now opening up again after being closed for a full year. The people they brought back from furlough are making under what they made on unemployment, even with tips worked in. Your personal experience isnt everyone elses.

Or, they still can't find daycare for children because a lot are still closed, or they fear sending their child to daycare because we're still in a global pandemic, or they aren't able to find a job they can do because of health concerns, or they have no job to return to because their employer was forced to close, or they can't afford to take a lower paying job than what they had before they're employer closed. There's a million reasons beyond "tHeY'Re lAzY!" But most selfish people can't see that because they only see that someone is getting something that they aren't so they're jealous.

I'm working the same job I had since before the pandemic, I'm making the same money, I don't give a damn of someone is making more on unemployment than I am because I would still be working my job regardless of if there was a pandemic or not. The government is still taking money from me no matter of it's used to bomb weddings in Iraq or play extra unemployment.

Normal unemployment is payed for by the employer, and it's normally only 15%-25% of your wages (more or less depending on state, some states have a fixed dollar amount) it is not enough to live on, we are in a pandemic where jobs and employers stopped existing almost over night, something had to be done to keep people from literally starving to death.. be glad you had a job that stuck around.

There has been a shift where people left low paying customer facing jobs during covid due to layoffs and went and got phone customer service jobs that pay benefits.

@Will_VIIII Hate to break it to you champ, but its not a wage issue, you might believe everything you hear from CNN, but reality is different, you dont realize how many people came into my job asking to be paid under the table so they can still collect, we start at $16 an hour, 40 hours a week with benefits, we are about to have to start working 12 hour shifts because we dont have enough people, because people would rather sit on their asses and collect than work at a job, like a productive member of society, and since the government is handing everything to these lazy fucks, including not having to pay taxes on this free money they are getting, its apparent that it is not a wage issue, its a people are lazy issue
