Fantastic premiere. Also AoS and all the non-Marvel Studios shows are effectively decanonised and that is ok. They can be their own thing. It makes the MCU more accessible, but its still there if you want to watch it.

I really love the story in Super Paper Mario and I think it holds up very well. It is the perfect version of what a story-centric Mario game could look like, and it is a shame that they kind of stopped after (until Origami King anyway). Very good story all together.

Im a socialist and all presidents are bad, no individual should be able to have that much power. With all that said hes done dome common sense things and vitally has reversed some of his immediate predecessors most disastrous executive decisions like withdrawing from the Paris Climate Agreement and the WHO, both of which are really globally destructive as well as domestically nonsensical. So he will be great almost by default. Which is to say I voted for the first one!

Ratings are your subjective feeling and as long as it is really how you feel I will count it. If you view 5 as neutral or 5 as a typical story thats okay. I would recommend against using a 1 for a story you ignored or dont think is important to the game, but if thats your subjective feeling it is what it is. Also I wont do games with no story like Tetris, although I could eventually do games with barebones stories.

Lastly a note on nominations. I am getting through them in the order in which games are nominated except when I was going to do the game anyway, when it is games in a series clumped together, or if multiple different people nominate a game. I wont have a public list to keep it a mystery though.

Very good game, wouldve been Naughty Dogs best story if not for the unnecessary final chapter (Santa Barbara) that frustrates the games own message. It does pull off its core conceit excellently it just shouldve known when to end.

Celeste gets an 8.5, my first use of the .5 score. Yes the gameplay can work fully on its own. However, the story not only accentuates that gameplay it is also really works well on its own despite the fact that it doesnt need to be good or even there. You might call it the best story in a non-story driven game!

Turnabout Trump I think. The style is really fresh for an AA intro and it sets the tone of the game well. I also like Turnabout Countdown a lot for this. The intro to The Lost turnabout is also one of the only good things about that entire case!

FFIV may have been the largest in scope then but other games told stories better, Link to the Past for instance even though the story is not as ambitious the storytelling is much better.

Anyway, FFIV has a lot of good and bad. I dont think age or the medium at the time should be held against it because we have seen this story get told again with better production values and an improved script multiple times yet the issues are the same. There is no saving that ending, which here should be taken to mean everything from the first utterance of the term lunar whale. However, Cecils story is quite compelling and there are real highpoints, so I will give it a 5.

After a lot of deliberation between a 6 or a 7 (or splitting the difference and going for a 6.5) I will give Metal Gear Solid 2 a:

I do quite like this story, and think that it is one of Kojimas better ones. The strength of its themes has been much discussed. It does, however, have some significant flaws, worst of all the fact that 9/11 led to a large part of the ending sequence getting dropped at the very last minute which resulted in it feeling disjointed and like a solid wall of exposition. Also, the success of this game (this is both the best reviewed and the highest selling MGS game) may have been bad for the series story and Kojimas writing as a whole? It is likely what led to MGS4 being the way it is, and that is getting a 1 or a 2 from me when it is rated. Ultimately I decided against factoring it in but I do resent this story slightly for leading to MGS4s dreadful story.

Not to talk down Operation Rainfall since it was a big part of the game getting early press and I doubt Pandoras Tower leaves Japan without it (as that is a much smaller game than the others) but Xenoblade ultimately got a US release because it sold well in Europe. If it didnt, it probably never would have cone out there.

Its also funny that it helped make British VA casts a thing. There are many games that use them now, JRPGs in particular.

Adam Howden is in a lot of stuff thats done in London, hes quite prolific. Id recommend FFXIV (Heavensward on) because its basically a Xenoblade reunion - Shulk, Fiora, Mumkhar, Egil, and Alvis all have big roles. Timothy Watson is playing spectacularly against type there.

Melia is fantastic by the way, and in Future Connected as well aside from that one line at the very start. She really delivers a great performance in not her natural accent that uses that accent to convey the character. You must suffer more would be super generic if not for her delivery.

I narrowly voted for Egil though. He delivers a commanding performance that turns academic and emotional when it needs to. He also gets the two best lines in the game in the same cutscene.

I dont want to say that Shulk is overrated because he deservedly gets a lot of praise for an amazing lead performance in a role it would be very easy to flub, but honestly it is wall to wall great acting.

Mate, Vlado was posting topics openly endorsing fascists (actual fascists who call themselves fascists as well as I cant believe its not fascism) and spreading racist views (neither of which he ever denied when called on, it was hilariously blatant) until they finally got modded about two years ago or so. He was a couple of months ago (if that) in a topic telling people with adopted children that adoption was wrong and that they are not worth the same to them as biological children. He has gotten worse in those seven years (huh I wonder what happened seven years ago), not better.
