Textbook example of the "flawed masterpiece." I think the game's themes are worthy of exploration, and there are some pretty good moments throughout - the beginning, Chronopolis, the fight with Miguel, the twist halfway through.

As a sequel to Chrono Trigger it doesn't work, because it is too pessimistic/tonally dissonant. As its own game, the story is hindered by it trying to be a sequel to Chrono Trigger. Also the large amount of playable characters hurts the narrative because it prevents character development. I've always dreamed of remaking this game with a set 8 character party, because then I think it would be truly special.

Unnecessarily jumbled convoluted mess for the sake of being deep. Bloated unmemorable cast with terrible dialogue topped with cringe worthy accent. Bad overall presentation as well.

Game itself is probably the most disappointing sequel I have ever played.

The huge cast is part of the charm of the game. Just wish they pulled it through in a more compelling way a la Suikoden.

I don't even really know what the story actually is supposed to be besides shoehorning some CT stuff in there. Like way too much stuff just seems like it doesn't matter.

It had one or two good moments, but mostly it failed, like they didn't really know what they wanted to do, and any attempts at bringing depth were totally flat, you need to be engaging to succeed with depth.

Damn this is a toughie.

Let's just slap an 8 on it and call it a day. The mood of the game, the themes it dwells in, and the awesome graphics and characters really take it up high, but overall it is pretty clumsy at being a coherent plot. It's like the inverse of Kingdom Hearts, where you can trust all the convolution actually means something, even if you need a guide or two to figure it out.

I like the themes it tries to tackle, and it has some really memorable moments. I played it before CT, so I didn't have a prior attachment to that game and its world at the time.

That being said, the cast is a complete mess, and I have no fond feelings for any of the characters. Cast chemistry is a super important part of a story for me, and CC has absolutely none.

I don't know. I've finished it several times, have read a bunch of articles about the story, and I have no clue how I feel about any of it. It feels like the game's plot defies being rated on any conventional scale. I want to give it a rating of "splorf".

I will say, having played Chrono Trigger, this game doesnt sound like how you would expect a sequel to that to go.

I played this a long time ago and, for the sake of clarity, I reread a synopsis to see why my memory was saying 'this game's plot is goofy'. It is goofy. There is no overarching logic or consistency to how or why any of the major antagonists do anything, and since they drive the story it's going to be a bumpy ride where you find out your dad is a cat is a computer and you become the cat also lavos schala dragons multiple dimensions time time is the plot interesting yet? Nope! 3/10 for a few good ideas in there. Game itself was fun enough.

The game has a really good story for the most part, though it does feel like it falls apart at the end. Between the ever increasing layers of complexity and the last minute CT ties it just couldn't do everything its creators wanted it to do. A true case of how less could be more.
