I dunno, I think it's awful but it honestly seems like something that could have been picked up more or less unaltered a few years ago. I mean, it's very much in the same style as the apparently successful archieverse reboots. Maybe people just actually remember and care about the original IP here though

In that time I've lost and gained 30 pounds. By the time July rolls around I may have lost another 10-15 again.

I wonder if anyone is gonna comment on my appearance. I mean they've seen me on zoom.

If we kept the scale the same and replaced the data with uniform values (say 11%) across the two maps, the wealthy map would look lighter, despite that they have the same data.

I think it depends where in the number line you do your replacement... Like, if you do it at 5 (my example) the wealthy map looks darker

Whereas if every state had a 5 percent tax on both, the wealthy map would be a shade darker even though it was the same rate.

Either way I think the confusing est part is that they sort of converge but at a weird point and not obvious when exactly

Ah man the color scheme is just confusing me. But I think the map is skewed the other way? If a 0-4 for the wealthy is the same shade as 0-5 for the poor, and the wealthy have another shade for 4-5 that's darker, doesn't that make taxes on the wealthy look higher than they and undercut the argument they're making? If every state hypothetically had an effective 5 percent tax on the middle and a 4 percent tax on the wealthy, they'd have the same shade even though the middle class are paying more. Maybe I'm thinking about this wrong.

chrono625 posted...
I think my point was that politicians have this crazy mindset that 100k in a low average income state has the same purchasing power as 100k in a California, NY or NJ.

hence why taxes are usually skewed and unfair depending on where you live.

I'm just saying this is based on what the averages are in each state

My hunch is they did this because of the data available. State taxes are generally regressive so the poor generally pay more than the wealthy so the relative scales are a bit different
chrono625 posted...
Its also why assuming everyones income value is the same across the board is a problem with how taxation works.

This is incorrect. It's based on income quintile within each state

Pretty clear why. That's not to discount the primary thesis here. But "data" is just a rhetorical device in these contexts. People should be aware.

What's the clear reason why? If you did both using the same color scheme, it would make the argument look stronger because the equivalent shade for the wealthy map is shifted one down (4 for the rich is the color of 5 for the middle class, etc)

Because, most not-income taxes are flat amounts or not income-based.

It's not just that the sales tax doesn't discriminate based on income, it's that people with lower income spend a larger share of their income (vs the wealthy investing and saving)

I'm from San Jose, California, moved to the central Arkansas/Little Rock area when I was about 13. I've kept in touch with family in the Sacramento area and visited them a few times over the years, and gone back to see a few friends. Though I don't pretend to know what it's like to live there any more obviously. I also lived in DC briefly.

Definitely people way more open with racism was a big culture shock to me when I moved here. Also the open preference for/assumption that I was Christian. A lot of ignorance stemming just from those two things (like people saying Catholics and Mormons aren't Christian totally sincerely, not like "oh they're not in communion with the true Christian church" just totally mistaking their beliefs). Poor education system in general and overall. People here had way lower ambitions; I had never known people who wanted to drop out of school early just to work at Walmart and move out before they turned 18. But I met several people like that here, even though there are just way less people to know in the first place. Everything is smaller and slower. Ymmv

Well going even further back just reduces the amount of playable games by half.

Sure you've got classics like Sotn that still hold up, but you also have games like alundra that don't. It's not about the graphics, it's about how the game plays and mechanics of it.

Edit: Oh lol we had the same idea of sotn, yeah that seems about right.

But no I most certainly don't mean crappy rareware games, those are 2nd party and I was talking about the handful 1st party from nintendo themselves. Although rare games were 3d so I actually don't know why you're bringing them up *shrugs*

Mostly to avoid having to point out the obvious truth that OoT and SM64 hold up like crap honestly

I mean, they hold up as well or better than 2d games before ps1 just objectively speaking. They're more modern and more polished than anything on snes. I guess if you think 2d gaming in general didn't hold up then sure

Edit: though even then I think you're nuts to say something like a rare collectathon holds up better than like symphony of the night

Looking at a sales chart is EASY and then factoering in that there MANY friends don't need to OWN the game to play will tell you how much more popular the N 64 heavy hittwers were. That's why the crash franchise ultimately died off lol. Even Sony didn't think it was worth keeping around and looked to make other "mee too" competitors to Nintendo's lineup as time went on.

I did look at the sales, crash team racing sold as much as Diddy Kong racing. Crash just released a new game, idk what to tell you

Pretty crazy that for the past 25 years, the trend with Nintendo has been the same: Their first party games are great and worth owning the console for, but they barely have anything else. Just the occasional 1 or 2 gems from 3rd parties.

Started with the N64 and hasn't changed since.

But hey those meager 5 N64 games still hold up to this day, while most ps1 games... less so. Graphically, performance wise, loading times, cumbersome controls... be it jrpg or action adventure, most ps1 games are borderline unplayable if you're used to the modern era

Every 2d ps1 game holds up pretty well. And there are lots of them
