| MrMallard 04/22/21 10:41:57 AM #1 | I saw a Fantano review for Ska Dreams - I love ska, so of course I watched it. I learned it was a ska revamp of his last album, so I thought I'd check out the source album before checking out the ska rework. This shit is straight out of 2005. It reminds me of the best stuff I've heard from Zebrahead, Unwritten Law and early Blink-182. It's like the better Burnout tracks, for a whole album. Every song on No Dream has been really fun and genuinely listenable. I'm looking forward to Ska Dreams, this is already very punky so to add a ska slant seems like a real peanut butter and chocolate sort of moment. --- Now Playing: Ni No Kuni, Hyrule Warriors, Stardew Valley |

| Topic | Australian Police Minister throws a tantrum over BLM posters in school |
| MrMallard 04/22/21 7:22:55 AM #7 | I've been sick lately, so I've gotten to see the start of this whole thing while I've been bundled up on the lounge. Initially I didn't know what to think, but upon learning that it was a pre-learning exercise with content created by students without the guidance of a teacher, I can confidently say that this is a non-issue. This is the result of the times we live in, not a bias taught in the classroom. Last night was the first time I slept the whole night in my own bed for three days, so I missed the morning shows today. But the Police Minister sounds like a fuckwit who doesn't understand the reality of the situation. The worst part is how adamant he is to say "we don't have a race problem" over here - we do have racism over here, and we would be wise to keep an eye out for it. Whether it's some fat bogan named Dane yelling racial slurs down the street in thongs and a singlet, or a police officer in the Northern Territory driving an indigenous bloke for hours through the desert to get him to jail without adequate access to water, leading to the prisoner dying in the back of the vehicle due to dehydration - we need to stay conscious of racism and the effects it has on the people it affects, and we need to work to eliminate it. The fucking Police Minister shouldn't be getting his nuggets caught in a twist like this, it's not professional and it's a weak look. I understand his point about America's troubles not being our "war". Ultimately, I do think that police in Australia are more trained than American cops are. I think the police are a more respectable institution in Australia than they are in America. Saying that, Australian police have their own problems - in particular, their track record with the indigenous population is appalling. There's a video of two indigenous women fighting in the street, pulling each other's hair and bashing each other, and the police are just standing there letting it play out. Their excuse was "that's how they settle disputes up here, and if we got in to break it up, it just would have festered and led to a harsher retaliation". I'd have to get a second opinion from a trusted source, but the image of two indigenous ladies flogging each other in the street while the police are doing absolutely nothing - literally standing a couple metres away and watching - is a very striking image. I can only hope that most of the country swings Labor this election. The past 8 years of Liberal leadership have stripped this country bare - of its resources and wealth, of its integrity and of its dignity. And now we have that bald fuck Peter Dutton as Defence Minister - one of a small, small handful of people who walked out of Kevin Rudd's apology to the indigenous population, and the man who's responsible for the fact that we haven't had a Liberal prime minister who's sat a full term in 8 years because he keeps gunning for a power vacuum so he can take the job. The man's a creep, and he's an evil son of a bitch - and every time he's subverted the democratic process, he's moved one link up the chain of command. When you have a piece of shit like that as out defence minister - when you have such widespread corruption in the Liberal government, across all boards - is it any wonder that our Police Minister is a shit-for-brains Liberal puppet whose pattern of speech hems closer to Trump than it has any right to do? This is irrelvant to pay.I don't think you can put a price on it, but I think she would have been better off if she felt like she was being fairly compensated for the stuff she was doing. That's what this article, and this thread, is ostensibly about - porn apparently doesn't pay well enough for what they want you to do. Though I will say in regards to suicidal thoughts and intent due to one's involvement with the porn industry - there should be a wider effort to bring therapy into the business, and to get stars who are having a bad time into therapy. Sometimes, that will result in a star making the decision to leave the industry for their own wellbeing. But it's the right thing to do when you've got former stars talking about how miserable and exploited they felt during their time in the spotlight. --- Now Playing: Ni No Kuni, Hyrule Warriors, Stardew Valley |

Stuff she's explicitly trying to warn other young women off of. Her argument that you can make more on the unmentionable site is fine, but that is a relatively new thing.Which is why her comments are relevant right now. There's an alternative to the porn industry that gives its workers more control and gives them a more direct link to the money they make. She's not making these comments a few years ago, she's making them now. Now is the time to dissuade more young women from entering the studio system and to go solo on platforms like The Unnamed Platform for their own wellbeing and their own bottom line. And yeah, they won't be millionaires. But if they can learn to cultivate an audience on their own terms, they can carve out a niche and make some okay money without putting themselves in the hands of a system that will push them to stick two cocks in their asshole for a level of compensation that will likely not be enough to justify the personal consequences that come from that sex act. | MrMallard 04/20/21 8:45:43 AM #11 | So I'll disclaim that this is my opinion and I might not be 100% correct on everything. But here's my take. I think to understand this, we need to understand the atmosphere around the Nazis and the rise of the first modern hate groups. Following the fall of Nazi Germany and the scope of their genocide, the Nazi party gained a monstrous reputation and were rightfully vilified for the evil acts they had done. This characterisation stayed in place for decades - the Nazis stood for evil, and we need to oppose everything they stood for. I just looked some stuff up and apparently neo-nazism has been around since the end of WWII - Nazis and Nazi sympathisers have been trying to control the narrative and get back into power for decades. But I think it's important to note that the general attitude in the west - at least to anyone who wasn't a massive bigot or anti-semite - is that Nazi ideology is evil and we need to ensure that such an evil could never rise to power again. But then you have your white supremacist gangs popping up, and your skinheads. And as the internet gained more and more popularity, they realised that they could spread their rhetoric to a lot more people with a lot less risk. So after the big flare-up of neo-nazi ideology in the 90's, a lot of them traded in "boots for suits" - a phrase meant to evoke blending in with the populace and becoming harder to detect. And it's through that anonymity that they began to use the internet to market their rhetoric to a wider audience. 4chan has been instrumental in propagating these beliefs, and stuff like the brony movement and Gamergate have been key events in converting angry internet patrons to white supremacist beliefs. They might not be about white supremacy, they might not even evoke white supremacy in any way, but what these events did was radicalise an angry, victimised group of white boys and give them a target to unleash all of their impotent frustration on. You can see in the case of Bronies: a bunch of lonely maladjusts start watching a show made for little girls, and a community springs up around their enjoyment of the show. Over time, these spaces become more and more toxic, and when bronies are called out for toxic behavior... well, now bronies don't have very nice things to say about feminists, since it tends to come from more of a leftist angle to criticize a group of people for making a truly unprecedented amount of pornography based on a children's TV show featuring horses. And from there, the movement can be further derailed by other people with other views. And then with Gamergate, there was a huge anti-feminism boom in that movement from the start. People like to point at the Kane and Lynch or Max Payne 3 reviews to display what the focus of gamergate was, but they happened a good while before gamergate and it fails to reflect the hostility directed at people like Zoe Quinn, Anita Sarkeesian and other leftist/feminist commentators. For any goodwill that gamergaters try to assert in regards to the movement, you can't deny that this is where the "culture war" bullshit really crept into gaming discourse - and I think it was a deliberate tactic to rile up angry young players, give them a target, give them communities to "feel welcome" in and then start a process of normalisation and indoctrination for racist and anti-semitic values. That's not to say that bigotry on the internet began with these two events. There are classic video game modifications that have been floating around since the 90's that are full of swastikas, slurs and racial caricatures - and again, 4chan has acted as a gateway to this sort of rhetoric for decades now. It's not a recent thing. And bigotry has persisted in the real world too; holocaust denial started in the 70's. But those two events have reached such a wide audience and affected the digital landscape to such a degree that whether someone was involved with either of them directly or not, it's probably made it a lot easier for them to run into bigoted rhetoric online. It's created communities for people to fall into. It's given bigots a level of control over the narrative that they've been working at for years - and it's paying off dividends. --- Now Playing: Ni No Kuni, Hyrule Warriors, Stardew Valley |

| MrMallard 04/20/21 7:16:12 AM #5 | The internet nearly made me a much worse person. I was fully on my way to becoming some sort of batshit crazy incel. I was hurt over everything wrong that was happening in my life, and I lashed out on the internet, and if I had found a place where my lashing out would have been validated I would have been off to the races. It's thanks to the people who had to put up with me in the communities I spent time in, who actively challenged my bullshit and reprimanded me for the fucked up things I did, that I even remotely had a shot at being an okay person. And even then, it wasn't smooth - I said some very, very fucked up things. I made some people feel really fucking unsafe. I lost friends, and I burned bridges beyond the point of repair in the most painful way possible for the other person. But it was ultimately because of the people around me who wouldn't let me get away with it and who kept me accountable that I turned out even reasonably as well as I did. I'd say that I became a better person through my time on the internet, but at the same time I became a better person despite the internet. --- Now Playing: Ni No Kuni, Hyrule Warriors, Stardew Valley |
