Not necessarily. Sometimes you jump forward and a character has died, and while it sucks that they just lived a life and died offscreen before you snap forward to that point in time, it's usually a good way to provide closure to the other characters and wrap a nice bow on the whole ordeal. Especially if it's a character whose function was moreso to bring the main characters together while they were more of a background character or a plot device, so their death - while impactful - doesn't encroach on the main team dynamic you enjoyed the show for.

My big media pet peeve is next generation stories. Mortal Kombat X - didn't like the new cast. I thought Star Wars had a chance, but each movie was worse than the last and it's so disappointing that it didn't live up to expectations. But then you have Creed, which is probably the poster boy for how to do a reboot.

Despite my distaste for next generation stories, I can't write it off completely any more. I'm wary of the concept, but it's less of the plot's fault and more the way it's used. It just so happens that most of the time, it's dogshit.

I was watching Philosophy Tube last night and Karl Marx's theory of labor alienation or whatever came up. The theory itself was interesting, but the term "alienation" resonated with me and I decided to google it to see how applicable that term could be to my current situation.

I found a webpage by Healthline, and it outlined a couple different types of alienation. I identified the most with isolation, powerlessness and self-estrangement. The definition it provided of alienation, as well as those three types it lists, helped me make sense of what I was feeling. Article's here - https://www.healthline.com/health/alienation

I have an appointment on Friday, I might be able to get some more mental healthcare to help me through what I'm going through. And I'm hoping I'll hear from my psychiatrist - I feel like I've either been dropped without a word or she's died in the month between appointments, but the reality of the situation is probably that we took a month off and I forgot. I'll know by the end of April, and even then it might have been a couple of months for me to fill out my mood charts, with appointments resuming at the end of May. So I'm hoping that I'll have some support on the horizon.

I hate listening to Americans say "mate". The inflection is all wrong. You'll never hear the same biting sarcasm from a bogan prick who's clearly intending to call you an asshole, because the way you say it is so soft and round - there's no room for the multitude of inflections that give it its ubiquity. It's terrible.

There's still one classifieds site I use, I recommended it to a dude who was pining for the long-gone days of having threesomes with his wife. I wonder if he got any use out of it.

Even if this phone has its cons and whatnot, it's nice to see some kinda innovation since all the major companies do incremental upgrades at best and then push it out year after year. I've gone from Apple to Google to Oneplus and it's nice not having brand loyalty and seeing all the different things different phones can offer you.
My sister sent me a Galaxy A30 when she got a new phone, but I still like my old Moto G5 Plus. It's an LCD over the Galaxy's OLED, but it's withstood some incredibly gnarly falls that would have rendered the Galaxy unusable.

A part of it is how lightweight it is in comparison, but it's also got a plastic case around the sides and that to take the brunt of the impact. I've dropped it on all 4 corners to the point that the plastic case is cracked and chipping off in places, and the only crack on my screen is up the top, away from any of the actual usable phone screen. I've never used a screen protector and I've dropped it at least a dozen times - including on the pavement and on the road due to loose pockets. The screen is still completely intact.

And on top of that, there's this thing called Moto Gestures. I can bring up my camera by twisting my wrist twice, and I can turn on my torch by chopping twice.

Getting my Moto G5 Plus reminded me of getting one of those ZTE brick phones in the late 2000's. It's such a sturdy, ubiquitous device, and shit like the gestures make it legitimately fun to use. It's intuitive and user-friendly in a way that later phones by companies like Apple and Samsung just aren't.

And a part of me hates that I turn into a fucking Moto shill any time I talk about my G5 Plus - I understand the concept behind brand identity, I get that getting people to use buzzwords and personify their device is another insidious branch of marketing that furthers a corporation's bottom line. But I have nothing but nice things to say about this device. It's outdated as fuck, but it's an excellent piece of kit.

A little bit. For the purposes of this thread, the process is like:

  • Enjoy being around someone
  • Begin to feel like something changed and it's my fault
  • Recognise that the negativity I'm feeling is coming from within me and I would probably be okay if I could move past it and live according to my better nature
  • Feel bad anyway until the negativity outweighs the positivity
  • Burn that bridge because it's too painful to be around them

Like, you like being around someone, but it causes you pain at the same time and you can't enjoy the good times as much as you want to because of the pain. You try to reconcile whatever aspect is hurting you with the net positive of the relationship that you like, but despite your better efforts to overcome it, the pain persists and makes it untenable to be around someone despite liking them.

Or you make a positive change in your life and commit to healthy living, but over time your mood drops to even worse levels than when you were treating your body like shit. So you compromise and try to live a life of balance, but the unhealthy lifestyle habits creep right back in and try to lure you down a path of self-destruction when healthy living seems impossible.

You're conscious of all of this - there's a disconnect between knowing and feeling. You're making a conscious effort to work on the bad stuff, but that's not working. The good stuff is negligible or outright nullified by the harm you're trying to overcome.

MrMallard

I would recommend you look into josei stuff, or like the older adult male genre. I think some of the simplicity comes from shonen shows being aimed at teenage boys, but also because of the genre's popularity influencing the quality of the work.

A lot of these shonen writers are on a weekly or bi-weekly schedule for each chapter. They need a fully written and illustrated comic that's like 30+ pages long, every week. That doesn't lend itself to greater plotting, and it doesn't lend itself to a robust social life which might add nuance to the writing, especially in regards to writing women.

You're probably going to find more complex themes and better characterisation in media aimed at older audiences, where the mangaka isn't cramming out an issue a week and where they're considering headier plot points and more mature characterisation.

If you're gonna have your drinking age at 21, might as well have your smoking age to match that.

Of course, it's a travesty that you'll let an 18 year old sign their life away to the army and potentially fight and die for their country, but you won't let them have a beer. If they're old enough for battle, they're old enough to have a drink. So either bump that up - which you won't, because a younger and more impressionable audience can be influenced by the military and you're less likely to be swayed by that rhetoric the older you get, and the army needs as many foot soldiers as they can get - or bring the age restrictions down and acknowledge 18 as the start of adulthood.

Ridge Racer, Driver, OutRun - stylish driving games with their own distinct tone, great music and sound design, and a real sense of coolness and style. Even just listening to the soundtrack of an old racing game showcases a personality inherent to those titles that doesn't really exist in any modern racing games.

I understand that there was a shift towards like street racing and simulation games, where car tuning and car modification became the norm - but outside of like Forza Horizon, games like that don't exist any more either. I guess it just costs too much money to make a game like that today.

I miss racing games with music that goes hard, silly mechanics that you have to get used to like Ridge Racer's clunky drifting to get ahead in the game, and ambitious level design that's set in the real world - or a fictional real world location - and not in like outer space or a reality TV show where everything blows up. A new Burnout game would be fantastic though.

I miss stylish racing games.

My understanding is that it's one of the better received Yakuza games. I haven't played it, but the lady cop is apparently well received for being one of the moste fleshed out female characters in the franchise with a compelling motive, the bragadocious Kansai Yakuza is well regarded for being an entertaining large ham, and you punch a fucking tiger in the fucking face.

It's not a popular opinion, but Yakuza 4 is my favorite. Probably because it was my first Yakuza game. I just think the way they split the story up in that game made it feel more cohesive and alive.

The DC animated movies were better when they were original, barely connected vignette movies which adapted different comic book arcs, and they stagnated when DC tried to make it a shared universe with a universal design and storyline. Look at Under the Red Hood and Flashpoint Paradox compared to the first shared universe Justice League movie, or the first Teen Titans movie.

I would argue that their live action movies have followed the same trajectory.

Two of the most well-received DC movies have been The Dark Knight and Joker - both prestige movies from passionate directors with a strong vision, though admittedly TDK was a part of a trilogy which ended kinda badly. Two of the worst - Suicide Squad and Whedon's JL - were studio compromises with corporate ties that ran to the bone, intended to flesh out a cinematic universe. We've had 8 years of Zack Snyder-influenced universe movies, and without him to steer that ship, we've had movies like Joker, Birds of Prey - which is hit and miss, but which at least turned in a few great performances and managed to have a cohesive sense of style, unlike Suicide Squad - and Shazam. All three aimed to break the mold, to varying levels of success. But they're all generally watchable, and they were all received pretty well.

Snyder has three movies to his name. Man of Steel was controversial to some, but received well enough. BvS was critically maligned, and was only salvaged to any degree with a director's cut that extended an excessive runtime even further. JL was out of his hands due to a personal incident, but without the ability to do a 4 hour monster of a director's cut, that movie is decent at best. He doesn't have a good track record, and DC have seen more of an uptick in quality since he stepped away.

I think it's worth exploring a post-Snyder cinematic universe, and/or taking in eager directors with passion for the properties they work with to make prestige movies. James Gunn is doing a Suicide Squad movie that looks alright, following on from Birds of Prey. We might be getting a Michael B. Jordan Superman movie, independent of Henry Cavill's tenure. They're probably going to make a sequel to Joker, and they're making a young Batman movie that may or may not be a part of the Snyderverse. And I would watch all four of those projects, if they're given room to breathe and handled by passionate directors with strong visions for those movies.

Snyder movies have a specific appeal, and I understand why his fans like them the way they do, but his way of doing things was not how the entire business should have been running. I'm more excited by the prospect of directorial and stylistic diversity than I am for another washed out ZS behemoth. Let him do some work on the Snyder universe, give him a miniseries or something for HBO Max, but I would like to see DC explore one-shot prestige movies and stuff to see how that experiment pans out before we give Zack Snyder the keys to the kingdom again.

It's a pain in the ass, sure, but I did all of that every time I played the trilogy anyway. If you're gonna get fully entrenched into the games and go for 100% completion, it's not that big of an ask.

But saying that - the reason this is such a pain in the ass is because they took out ME3 co-op.

For those not in the know: Mass Effect 3 multiplayer matches would raise your galactic readiness levels, since you were playing foot soldiers fighting battles on planets around the galaxy. If you maintained a high galactic readiness level in the multiplayer, you had a better chance of getting the best endings.

By taking out the multiplayer component, there's no way to directly affect the galactic readiness meter - unless they tie the galactic readiness meter directly to your trilogy completion or something.

I never played it, since I played Mass Effect on PS3 which never got it - but apparently it's a combat arena DLC for Mass Effect 1 with all of the clunkiness and quick, cheap deaths that would come from a wave-based arena combat area in Mass Effect 1.

I only ever got out of the base game's planet bases by being careful and picking off one enemy at a time. I have no idea how I'd cope with a wave-based arena mode.

On top of the clunky ME1 controls, I'm also imagining that it'd be as fun as playing Moxxxi's Underdome DLC in Borderlands 1 by yourself. Which I did. And it fucking sucked.

I can't imagine refusing to pick these up due to Pinnacle Station being missing. The fact of the matter is that the code for that DLC has been borked ever since the PS3 release - PS3 owners never got Pinnacle Station because of this code issue. It might have been cool, but it's no skin off my back since I never experienced that DLC in the first place.

But I do understand people being pissed about the multiplayer, because ME3 multiplayer is a top tier game mode. Me and my friend got lost in ME3 multiplayer like 2 years ago, and we still have multiplayer binges from time to time.

I don't understand why they haven't ported multiplayer. The only reason I can come up with is that people would be pissed at the microtransactions, which did exist in the original product. Otherwise, it's bizarre that they haven't ported over the best part of Mass Effect 3 - people are still playing the PS3 and X360 modes to this day, to the point that you can still find a game in 2021, so it's got some degree of popularity and longevity. And it's even monetized, so EA get to sate their bottom line.

Same. I had the trilogy on PS3, but my console broke. Looks like they actually really did a great job.
As someone who played the trilogy on PS3 - that's probably for the best. The frame rate for the entire trilogy, at all times, was sub-30.
