Has one of the best bait-and-switch openings in all of gaming. Raiden is a perfect protagonist; in the game's crazy plot that mixes psychological thriller with political meanderings, anime-tier insane antagonists, and ever increasing levels of meta meddling, Raiden feels like the only one not in on the joke as he idiotically stumbles from one plot point to the next while somehow being the most central character to it all. The game is prescient and relevant, overwritten yes, but that's also part of its charm. It revels in being a Hollywood blockbuster, a goofy video game with 4th wall breaks everywhere, and a genuinely engaging philosophical work of art, and to pull off all three at the same time and have it work and be memorable and quotable is a genuine achievement of interactive storytelling.

A horribly ill-paced story with ultimately no pay-off or satisfying build-up to make it even come close to worth it. The main story is a complete retread of Fallout 3 and it completely squanders its colorful and likable supporting cast. But, if you consider side quests part of the story, and I do, Fallout 4 still manages to shine, with quests like the Silver Shroud putting you in the role of serial vigilante and putting the dialogue system to some actually funny use, the always-creepy and mysterious Vault explorations that are always the highlight of any particular Fallout as you piece together the tragedies and horrors of each vault, or the exploring the enigmatic Cabot house that you just know dark secrets wait behind. It's just too bad none of this care is really applied to the main plot. Fallout 4 is ultimately driven more on gameplay moments and atmosphere than solid scripting, and in game like this I do think it's what's necessary and the most engaging, but if you're looking for a well-told story front-to-back, I would look elsewhere.

Shows the growing pains of 7th-gen storytelling, as ND clumsily tries to balance influence from Indiana Jones, Tomb Raider, old film serials, and high-budget summer blockbusters with clear passion and strong artistic direction & aesthetic but without the proper know-how to truly stick the landing in all areas. For a first game, the characters it introduces clearly worked, and the game excels at making the entire main character and even its villains likable, as Nate, Elena, and Sully become these characters you just want to hang out, and the game even does a decent job at fleshing these's characters backstories out without much clunky exposition in the dialogue. You get a sense there's a world here without it having to be spelled out to you. Its transition to horror/supernatural near the end of the game is very Indy/Lara-esque, however it does not translate here well as it comes out without much signalling and foreshadowing, which can work in certain fictional pieces as a jarring tonal shift that changes one's perception of the story, but here it's not executed well-enough or given the proper justification to be more than "that one horror section in Uncharted."

As one of the first forays into true cinematic storytelling in gaming, Uncharted was a necessary stepping stone, and you can see brief glimpses of genius where gameplay and the plot intersect seamlessly in a way that's commonplace now, and in its own context it stands out as an achievement. Far-removed from 7th gen, it's still an above-average piece thanks to its intense commitment to a standard treasure-adventure plot, but it has been outshined by many other games in the medium and definitely by its own sequels even just by the second game.
