DAY 5: As Above, So Below
On Netflix

As Above, So Below is another found footage movie (I did not want to watch another one so soon but oh well). It also has Superstore's Jonah in it. This is... I'd say, a good try on this genre.

The story of this is that a group of people are on the hunt in Paris ruins for a stone that her father had also looked for. However, they find that they are getting lost and seem as though they're all just going in circles and get massively lost.

Honestly, the premise of this is very good from the start. Like shockingly good. So I couldn't help but be disappointed in this when it kind of doesn't really deliver as hard as you might like it to. There are very cool scenes throughout this movie with really good scares. However, they're so few and far between that while you can appreciate them, they don't make up for the rest of the movie which is people in small ruin corridors having breakdowns.

This wasn't a bad watch by any stretch, but I did find myself growing more disinterested. I appreciate the attempt more, I guess, especially when you could see what biblical story they are referring to throughout the film. The ending is a bit... well, it's contrived. I was scratching my head, just baffled by them going this route and not doing something... I don't know, cooler? Anything cooler?

It's a good attempt, as I said, but it really feels like they should have delivered more on their premise they set up. If you're interested in a unique found footage movie, give it a shot I guess. Or if the set piece of the Paris ruins is something that interests you, watch it as well because it's actually really cool. But go into it with tapered expectations.

Rating: 5.5/10
This movie literally doesn't know what to do with itself and basically just abruptly ends.

again, i don't get why this only seems to happen in sweden.

like, my country had a lockdown and we got the virus reasonably under control, then we opened up and now there's new restricting measures because we're getting thousands of new cases a day again. why didn't we get herd immunity after we opened up?
Because you shut down and limited your spread. When you lessen your numbers and start again, you don't get the early initial spike and subsequent steady tail of infections to provide the immunity.

You are the one who falls for the theatrics that Republicans put on stage. The context of this comment was your assertion that the democrats should come down an equal amount to what the Republicans went up by. As FD has already addressed, the arbitrary amount halfway between the two proposals is not a reasonable proposal either.

I'm conflating nothing. This conversation began as a discussion on compromising.
That was not the assertion. The assertion was that they should make an agreement and Pelosi hasn't budged in a long time while Republicans have multiple times. Now, that doesn't mean Pelosi's deal might not be better. It likely is in most spots. However, the nothing is better than something approach doesn't make sense. They say repeatedly they are confident that they win the senate and the white house. If so, they will get everything they want down the road anyways. Get something now.

Timeline:

March 27th: CARES Act is passed
April: CARES Act rolls out, a majority have their stimulus by mid-may, though there are exceptions.
May: House (democrats) pass HEROES Act (3.4 trillion)
May: Republicans propose nothing.
June: Republicans propose nothing.
Most of July: Republicans propose nothing.
July 27th: Republicans propose HEALS act (1 trillion)
August 18th: Republicans propose a reduced package of 500 billion.
Late August: Democrats indicate willingness to reduce to 2.2 trillion.
September: Republicans indicate willingness to increase to 1.6 trillion.

Please explain to me how the senate and white house are negotiating in good faith. The skinny proposal was after a larger proposal.
Just so they can say "look, we're willing to go from 0.5T to 1.6T (which I believe is the current offer) to make it seem like they are budging a lot, which it's actually not very far from their actual original position.

But the real bottom line is that MORE help is needed than the republicans are offering. When Disney has to lay-off nearly 30,000 employees, and other large companies are on the verge of insolvency (with more to follow) the fact is that it would be better to provide MORE help than the republicans feel is necessary rather than provide LESS help than the democrats feel is the bare minimum.
You are way too not stupid to not know the 3.4 trillion bill was not passed with expectation it would become law.

There are three parts of the process. The Senate, the House, and the White House. The Democrats control exactly one of them. Yet, you feel they dictate policy also is hilarious.

Yeah, a damn shame that the democrats budged nearly a trillion dollars from their original proposal. The proposal they passed in MAY. But the senate/whitehouse has basically not moved at all.

Meanwhile I'm bombarded by calls all day from people asking when they are getting their second stimulus and I have to explain that the second stimulus doesn't exist yet and the IRS wont have any information to provide on it until it exists. People who are struggling and who's help has run out. I've heard more people crying in the past 5 months of working from home than I would care to. I think I preferred it when people yelled at me because their tax refund was 3 weeks late.
That's about as dumb as arguing that republicans have budged 1.7 trillion from their 300 billion skinny proposal and the democrats only 1.2 trillion lower.

Most people getting the virus before a vaccine is not inevitable even now. It certainly wasnt back at the start of this thing. Slowing the spread of the virus reduces the number of people who will ultimately get it.

Were also now a little better at treating the virus, which seems to have reduced the death rate a bit.
The point of lockdowns was NEVER to slow the spread until the vaccine. Only to lower the curve to not overwhelm hospitals. If the virus can run its course without overwhelming hospitals, then that is the best way to go about it.

Always from the start has been the guidance we were provided.

They are recommended wearing masks to keep the spread down for lives saved and social distancing.

That is where Trump shit the bed. He undercut the CDC when they announced the mask recommendation.

The point of the lockdowns was absolutely to stop people from dying (which would, of course, be greatly exacerbated by hospitals being overwhelmed).
The point of lockdowns was so hospitals didn't get overwhelmed and deaths were exacerbated by not being able to provide help.

The point was precisely to lockdown, drop the infection rate, provide PPE and Health Guidance, and increase hospital limits.

The lockdowns were never to eradicate the virus as that is impossible once it broke out of china.
