Pretty unusual mix of different styles. Kind of reminiscent of Slag Dance that way. Has a ton of personality, which you'd think would go without saying in regards to anything Supergiant. In a lot of aspects, it's actually one of my favorite songs in the ranking. Some amazing instrumentation, and many of the segments taken without context are tops. The song as a whole (probably intentionally) doesn't move around much, so this brilliance isn't taken full advantage of

Excellent song name. Kind of like a MMBN dungeon theme but older. A fun fact that I learned about an hour before I got to this song: 'Abaddon' literally means 'destruction' in Hebrew. It was a place in the Old Testament, but in the New it kind of got a Greek mythological connotation and become also a character. I highly recommend spending a day reading about apocrypha and mysticism and gnosticism and Kabbalah. There's a lot of really cool, really weird nonsense hidden in contemporary religions and their classical interpretations that we completely miss

It opens like an example of the most famous genre of music: surprisingly good PSO2 that plays in a somewhat fun game mode that the devs forgot about weeks after adding it and largely abandoned by the playerbase aside from the relatively close-knit community of 19 people that still play it. The juxtaposition with the pretty standard traditional Japanese soundset with the guitar and synth is cool. It's not a terribly obscure combination, but still appreciated when it shows up. It turns into a flash game at 1:20 for some reason, and then a weak, unfitting horn comes out of nowhere. I can appreciate what it's doing, even if one of the instruments sounds like a dying cat

Very schmoody. Chris Christodolou doesn't get much recognition outside these soundtracks, so I doubt people really recognize his overall style. He tends to blend in funk very well into his tracks where you wouldn't really expect them. I get the impression that the developers of Risk of Rain had a distinctive feel they wanted the composer to follow, and anybody else with the job would've made something that kind of sounds like this, but without the Christodoulou funk that makes it so memorable

It seemed really promising when it started changing up. It seemed then that it was changing into a very disappointing, generic "let the beat drop" garbage. And the piano came back and it turned into something almost Danganronpa-esque. And this guy apparently did some PMD stuff?? I guess to summarize my feelings for this, I like the idea a lot more than the execution.
