it's weird how long these final years for it have drawn out so easily. it was already feeling like it was on its last legs when the switch came in, now games that i'd have otherwise considered easily are nearly 3 years old with plenty having continued to land since. i'd argue the twilight years refuse to end even now

match 1 sure is a match. both of these appeal to me in ways that i wouldn't normally expect to come up here, and i like them outside of those aspects too

2 dragons... exists. i don't know why it exists in this contest though, barely any of it elicits an emotion from me. mysterious trap on the other hand is an exciting song that almost feels like a convenient fusion of both match 1 songs lol (well, not really but vaguely close)

2 songs i wish i liked more these days. fortunately, i'm also in a better mindset for them than usual thanks to the other songs today. yoati has a fun range of instruments and uses them to change the mood very effectively. kurokami midareshi on the other hand is a very pre-vgmcx song that was exactly my shit then. i don't think i'd normally be as into it still as i am right now.

could plausibly flip on 1 and 3 today because their opponents are up there too

I'm not a massive fan of the gliding or gravity stuff either tbh. Although it has online multiplayer and loads of tracks so it's still up there for me.

7 was the one that introduced gliding (along with the return to coins) and again i didn't mind those ones but yeah gravity and more so the spin boosts are pretty not my thing and idunno i just don't like its tracks that much

gonna be the only one to ever say this i'm sure but i like absolutely none of the mechanical changes introduced in 8 and will never consider it anywhere near the best game in the series whatever the version. 7 was still very good though. and mkwii's wiimote controls are perfectly fine, in fact they're well above average for wii or wii u racing games and i still use the steering wheel once in a while

my impression of the lanota song has varied so much it's almost hard to believe i've been listening to the same song each time. today, it's not the lowest it's been but it's also not very high
meanwhile gamma is a song where my opinion varies depending on where in the song i even am. it's one i don't really get at first and then somehow get way into like more than i probably should

ulil rftm for VGMC14.5. anyway, imperishable night's soundtrack is very strong and consistent so while this isn't at the top of it for me, especially after much of the impact of it has been lost over the year, i still think it's very good (and this is shown surprisingly often)
i almost did but neglected to mention this yesterday, english vocals are often not my thing, so when i find a song where they aren't dragging a song down, I respect that. Funny thing is, I do think they are here in the sense that is is a little bit weaker than kaze no ne, but all the same it's a very strong take that is pretty much just as immersive.

crab. tough to come up with words on this, but... it's a song that i enjoy, but also not a song that i think i like overall (especially not when it's so often paired with the other crab song meme people won't shut up about when fight crab is discussed in the slightest. it's really frustrating as a deku and nussoft fan to see it get zero acknowledgement or respect, but that's all irrelevant). it has a lot of elements in it that i can associate with other things that i have varying opinions on. not all the things in it are parts i'm happy to see now, and it overall it doesn't leave me with a positive vibe and that's unfortunate. sorry crab song
i have entirely forgotten what my overall impressions were on all the persona 5 songs in their main year were, but as a general rule... guilty pleasure, but I really enjoy singing along to them. this one's no different.

re:union is not my favourite deemo thing i saw in noms or even close to it but it's still good. very fun song actually, this was a little closer than i thought it'd be (not that that means that much)

Two things about this match. mycro may have passed responsibility for this matchup onto me, which is fair, but in my defense, i wanted Hinagiku to have a more winnable matchup, which i think it has compared to the Disco Necropolis one it had before. I also don't think Jazzy NNYC would've appreciated this one either, so there's that too. Still... Yeah, I'm sorry. As for the other thing... I really like Hinagiku, if it wasn't clear. But contrary to popular belief it is not because "hinagiku has an anime girl in it" - @Sneasel in 11/16 Time#1844. In fact, any "anime" aspects or vocals are probably the least memorable factor to me, not because they're bad, but because more specifically i find myself entranced by the other elements in it. It was among my favourites in noms and i'm glad it got in..
Having said that, and this ties back into my first point... so was Beyond the Darkness, unexpectedly. So uh oops. Way better than I realised even, I didn't actually expect it would be this high for me. I guess there's only so much one can do to lessen the blow on a low seeded song (short of giving it battle tower)

sky tower is a very sky tower song honestly i don't like it as much as the original though... but it is still sky tower so. you know. it's catchy and alright.
inanimate dream is a good example of good classic 2hu music. i happen to like that kind of stuff even more than you'd think. only weak point with it is a somewhat unremarkable loop, besides that i still dig this a lot

truth be told i never played a sims or simcity game myself, but something like this is still deeply nostalgic to me I suppose largely because of the other games similar to it that i played at the time (eg. rct3), even if they didn't have the same composers. it's good.
by contrast, even though i do have a reasonable amount of familiarity with the particular composer of the opoona song, the games I've played that he's done are all not this style. Rather than Opoona, the 2007 basiscape-composed game I played was GrimGrimoire. Which i don't regret, mind you, GrimGrimoire's easily one of my favourite games. Point is though, it's a style I never really experienced outside of vgm and that's interesting to me.

when this version of luna ascension managed to retire the ost wasn't even out and it only formally got a name a little after the contest ended lol, and that was before any other rivals song did too i think. i feel like it's kind of bad this one did what it managed to do with a very unexpected cinderella run i never saw coming, since it just kind of cemented a status for rivals over every other flashygoodness soundtrack when i consider it probably their weakest one overall. at the time i nominated it, there weren't very many songs uploaded, but it was the only one i would've ever considered for the contest, and even then i was also on the fence about it vs the Super Smash Land version https://flashygoodness.bandcamp.com/track/tower-of-heaven-luna-ascension-gb-mix and actually the main reason i only really went with it was because i thought it would benefit from the extreme Undertale presence that contest combined with recency bias which i guess worked out. either way, it's one of the definitive flashygoodness songs to me whatever iteration it's in.
dammit dowolf stealing the joke i wanted to do. anyway endless 9 is... ok. it's not bad but i can think of a surprising number of other umineko songs (and not just dai songs) that give off the same general impression to me that I just like more. sunshine -destructive- it is not (vgmcx luna ascension match reference)

I was torn between nominating The Wyrm's Jewelbox and The Maiden Under Spell, but kaonashi beat me to it so I ended up supporting the former.

yeah it was on my radar since forever ago (well okay more like... about a year ago i think?) and the only reason i haven't played it is because uhhhhh (i can't actually run it lol oops). i knew it had an ost that i'd like it just took over a month for me to get it so i did not have the time to check it till now

i guess i could've checked youtube or the game files but since i was waiting for the physical ost to further my collection of "shmup fighter osts" i did not oh well

in any case i'll need to go back and actually check what ones i was enjoying and maybe start noting stuff down for next time.

on a related shmup fighter ost note, i think i forgot to ever mention this actually, the song that was on my noms this year that i ended up not posting because it was from the same game as another song (and i never supported that one) was from senko 2... another reason i didn't go with it is because my knowledge on senko's soundtracks in general isn't as strong as i'd like so i wanted to go through all of them before deciding (and didn't have the time to...) so maybe i might also post some senko stuff next time who knows probably

i think i do know though why mk8 big blue doesn't work for me at least. it's kinda cool but also just feels very... semi-modern jrpg battle themey this way and kind of lessens its appeal to me even though it's a pretty fun arrangement otherwise. just kinda conflicts with the image i want it to have or something i guess. it especially helps when it is immediately preceded by an actual jrpg battle theme lol

deoxys ribs whatever sounds like a lot of different things at different times overall i think it is pretty good there are some things i like quite a bit, some things that don't go as well together as it probably hopes they do and a handful of parts that just aren't as there as the rest that prevent it going too high but it definitely has what it takes to be something
fear not this night is nice. not my particular preferred flavour of this kind of thing with its english vocals and all but again not bad.

snake eater is a song that absolutely does benefit from its vocals, however, even if its lyrics are a little goofy at times. a quirky but still definitive classic that i'm glad still gets enough respect to make it into these things. would be nice if it could top that off with a retirement, it's not like every mgs song has to be like you-know-what
shop till you drop is a song that i enjoy every second of more than i fully know i should

hail hidra. a song i was super big on in its first year alongside other ar nosurge things. my view dropped a little bit after, but now that we've passed the point of there being saturation of gust stuff i view higher than it... it really is a great song, huh.
speaking of songs that i view highly but also had worthy rivals from its game in its time, servants. shame murderswarm had to be where it was considering it was my probable favourite, but this is still very respectable. i wasn't sold on dm dokuro but the presence of stuff like this turned that around pretty easily
