Like, she didn't need to have the trident. She could have said "I'm not playing this stupid game today" but instead she accepted it.

See that's dicey. The protesters are in a gated community, which is private property. The question is: was the sidewalk property that the couple had a right to defend? Was it theirs by ownership? Specifically brandishing a weapon?

In all seriousness, it's the kind of thing that can help de-escalate conflict. By and large, retail doesn't care if you're "right". They just care that people can go about their time in the store without feeling uncomfortable, and witnessing conflict will totally do that.
