No.

And I'll never cross a 0 because my math background always makes me see that as a theta. I make 0's significantly more elongated and narrow than O's in order to differentiate them.

I do, for some reason, cross my Z's though. Don't really even know where I picked that up, tbh.

I just heard that this was a thing for the first time ever when someone said something about being so bored during quarantine they were shaving their couch, then posted a video of using a straight razor to shave the lint off the couch cushions. It was oddly satisfying to watch, and surprisingly effective.

I have since used it to clean up a couple of my hoodies. >_>

No, but I've been accused of it because my store doesn't accept it. They seem to be under the impression that it is specifically me who is saying I won't accept it and not that the store itself doesn't and even if I wanted to let them pay with it the card reader would reject it.

Yeah, people really are that stupid.

Aristoph
04/25/20 1:59:27 PM
#31
It should never be embarrassing to be a virgin unless you've been actively trying for years and have literally just failed every attempt.

It all comes down to the attitude of the person in question more than the age. If you're 30+ and still a virgin because you're saving yourself for marriage, or because you've had opportunities but chosen not to take them for one reason or another, then there's nothing to be embarrassed about. But if you're 20 and still a virgin despite having been trying for a few years and you keep screwing up the opportunities despite wanting to take them, then that is something to be embarrassed about.

About the same. Maybe only slightly more often due to work enforcing stricter requirements. For instance, I now have to wash my hands before and after I make our breakfast foods in the morning. I used to just wash before because I wasn't handling any raw chicken or things like that and I have to wear gloves anyway. Seems like a waste of water/soap to me, but whatever.

I voted for "not directly" because my family would never outright say that it was wrong and I couldn't point to any instance where my parents actually treated anybody differently because of their orientation. But I definitely got a strong vibe from my dad that he was not okay with it just from the way he would talk about a couple of guys I knew were gay. Which was very difficult for me as a 10-year old boy who was struggling to come to grips with the fact that I had a massive crush on my best friend Geoff.

Over time I started to realize that he was talking about those guys like that not because of their sexual preferences, but because they were just generally kinda weird dudes. I eventually came out to all my friends as bi in junior year of high school and all but 1 of them were completely cool with it and didn't act like anything was different afterwards. The 1 guy was a Mormon and refused to speak to me anymore. I didn't much care, because he stopped hanging out with any of us and nobody else seemed to mind his absence either.

...I've technically still never told my parents. I think they probably know, but I've never had a proper boyfriend to bring home so it's just never really come up.

TopicWhy some people don't wash their hands
Aristoph
04/19/20 11:27:23 PM

I don't wash my hands as often as I should. But it's not some big mystery to me as to the reason. I am very uncomfortable with my hands being wet. When I was in pre-school, I literally started crying when the teacher tried to force me to do finger-painting. Having anything wet or slimy on my hands makes me queasy, and no matter how well I dry them off I feel like there's something still there for like an hour afterwards.

As I've gotten older I've obviously gotten better about suppressing the nausea, of course. But I still avoid it whenever it's reasonably possible to do so. If I take a shit, for example, I always wash my hands. But if it's just a piss I usually don't bother (or will simply do a quick rinse with water and no soap).

I get a similar feeling if I'm wearing tight-fitting gloves (latex medical or food service gloves are the worst) for more than a few minutes. I think that comes from when I was a kid as well. I used to get these really weird bumps on the insides of my fingers every spring as an allergic reaction to something we were never able to figure out. They were unbelievably itchy and the only way to really even keep the agitation to a tolerable level was to wear gloves to help avoid rubbing them pretty much 24/7 for like 3 months a year. Baseball batting gloves seemed to work best. They just sorta stopped showing up when I was around 15, but wearing gloves still gives me phantom itches to this day.

These are always "hit and run" topics. Make the topic. Walk away. Let the idiots troll each other to a 500 topic. The TC isn't actually interested in the answer to the problem. That's genuinely not the point of the topic.

FWIW, the correct answer is 2/3. But problems like these aren't formulated to be "solved" but rather to illustrate just how bad the human mind is at comprehending probability and statistics in general. You're not supposed to find the answer, you're supposed to find out where the flaws are in the logic used so that you can avoid or account for those flaws in more important problems.

Mechanically speaking, yes. But that's only a small portion of what makes the pros as good as they are.

The majority of what distinguishes a pro from a simply above-average player is game/map knowledge. Knowing how fast it's possible for an enemy to get from one place to another, likely routes they'll take around the map, important choke points to control, optimal weapon setups and their optimal counters, etc.

Why vote when you cant vote for the change you want to see?

Then you vote to keep out the change that will prevent your desire from ever being possible. And in the meantime, you work harder to get the change you want to see into the conversation.

If you don't like what you see at the national level, you can't just instantly replace it with your own vision. You should be working to make your local government fit your beliefs. If you get a better mayor into office and he does well, people will take notice and other local governments will start following suit. And once a bunch of local governments have made that change and it has continued to do well, that stance will become more viable higher up the chain. But you have to start at the bottom and work up, not the other way around. And, again, you still need to vote for the top offices to ensure that your vision is still possible by the time it's built up to the highest levels of government.

And let's not forget the idiocy of the argument "they're not listening to what I want, so I'm going to stop talking." Because that's what not voting is. You've decided not to put your voice into the conversation and you're expecting that will somehow make people start doing what you want? Good luck with that.

$1000 is literally nothing over the span of more than a couple months. I'd easily save more than $1000 in just the first year if I could just have a pretzel whenever I was hungry.

Hell, I could imagine a meal that's 70% pretzel and 30% pizza, just eat the pizza part, and then summon another one if I was still hungry. Free pizza. Free literally any kind of food, in fact. I'd donate the excess pretzel pieces or just give them to the homeless or something.

Why would it use an abnormal past tense just in this gaming context?

I always consider the term "grind" in a gaming sense to be more of a noun. It's "the grind" as in the time spent doing a repetitive task rather than the actual act of doing the task itself. I know it's not perfect, because we still say things like "I'm grinding for X item right now."

But in general it's like the difference between "grind this thing up" and "grind for this thing."

I'm also envisioning very large, open courses with minimal small checkpoints to go through along the way. You could play it safe, fly high and go in a perfectly straight line. Or you could go hot-shot and start ducking and weaving a few feet off the ground through tight canyons so you can achieve ludicrous speeds.

There might also be a mechanic where you can go super low to gain speed and then pull up out of a canyon and sort of "coast" to carry some of that momentum in a safer, more direct path. Your engine couldn't continue thrusting at 5000mph, but if you're going 5000mph and you cut your engines you don't just instantly drop to a standstill, after all. It could come down to optimizing where you can confidently dip down low to gain that speed and which areas of the course you should use that speed to skip over the top of, etc.

my one issue is that racing is typically about finding the fastest line through a course anyway. i wonder if this might have the opposite effect, where instead of providing a catch-up mechanic, it makes it harder to ever catch up.

I mean...not really? In real racing you still see leaders taking safer lines that are slightly slower because they can afford the extra time and don't want to risk crashing out and not even finishing. People don't push right to the razor's edge of possibility every single lap of every single race just because that's "the best line." Reality is that nobody's perfect, everyone makes mistakes, and so if they always go for that optimal line they will occasionally push just a hair too far or misjudge their position by a fraction and it costs them everything.
