And yes, I agree that it seems kind of insane to think back and realize that we've been doing this more than a decade. Then again, it also seems insane when I think about the fact that I've been on PotD since 2004 or so. Where the hell did all this time go? Extremely irritating. Both because of personal annoyance (mainly fogging up my glasses), but also because I'm fully aware it serves zero useful purpose in my case. Because a) it's not really protecting me from getting infected, and b) it's not really protecting anyone else either, because -I'm- not sick (I self-quarantine for weeks at a time, and only go out to grocery shop, so the odds of me being asymptomatic and contagious at any point are pretty much nil).

I don't object to the idea of requiring people to wear masks in public, though (as long as masks are relatively accessible and available for people to buy, because the idea of requiring people to make their own is kind of bullshit), because it does have a positive effect on limiting transmission for people who ARE asymptomatic and contagious, or who are symptomatic but refuse/are unable to self-isolate until they're clear.

About 12 years ago, we wrote a sophisticated AI that scans the Internet, collates ideas that are related to gaming, and then constructs a poll based on that data.

The polls have always been flawed, because we had to deliberately make the AI somewhat stupid. The first iteration of the AI we created was too intelligent, and it almost immediately began accessing military networks and took control of NORAD. We barely managed to shut it down before it could fire nuclear warheads at Europe.

So every time someone complains about a missing or inadequate option, they're basically arguing in favor of thermonuclear doom. Maybe next time you'll think twice and better appreciate the sacrifices we're making on your behalf.

ParanoidObsessive

No.

But someone's character can make it harder for someone else to appreciate the quality of what that person has produced. And those people aren't necessarily wrong for feeling that way.

Chris Benoit basically went batshit crazy and murdered his wife and son, then committed suicide. This doesn't alter the fact that he was one of the best wrestlers of his generation, and possibly of all time. But now there are people who used to love him who cannot stand going back to watch any of his prior matches and cannot do so without feeling extremely uncomfortable, and he will never, ever be inducted into any wrestling hall of fame, ever. The objective reality of the work is unaffected, but the subjective interpretation of it has absolutely changed.

The fact that this is a subjective reaction means that it isn't universal. For some people, the fact that Bryan Singer has been accused of multiple instances of what is essentially homosexual sexual assault of underage victims will make it very, very hard for them to ever watch the original X-Men movies again. For others, their fondness for the films transcends whatever the director of them may have been up to. Neither perspective is really wrong.

I just thought the eponymous Halos was a silly concept since your 2 options are Kill everyone or Kill everyone

Because you don't really understand the choice. It's more "kill everything now, but save the future" versus "allow everything ever to be corrupted forever".

It's a mass version of the "fate worse than death" trope combined with self-sacrifice. It's fairly common in a lot of fictional contexts. Like having to burn a city to keep a plague from spreading, or killing someone to prevent them from being possessed by evil. Halo's just on a much larger scale.

In one outcome, everyone dies, but the Flood is (theoretically) destroyed forever, and new life can potentially evolve in the future. In the other outcome, the Flood consumes everything and the entire galaxy (if not universe) becomes giant zombie horde which no one can survive. It's not really a hard choice to make.

also since the plan is starvation, my scenario still stands - the non-sapient life would still get to go on

If you leave the Flood alone, they effectively eat all of the sapient life in the universe, and infect pretty much any species that eventually becomes sapient. In essence, the Flood become both the dominant and only race in the entire galaxy (and potentially other galaxies as well, if they choose to spread), and no other race will ever evolve, period.

If you kill the Flood now, then any and every race that will eventually evolve to sapience in the future will live in a galaxy free of the Flood, and will be able to choose their own destiny.

So the Forerunner answer was basically "Well, we're doomed either way, and so is any other sapient life still alive now, but if we all mass suicide now, then countless races not yet born will be saved." And because the Forerunner philosophy was one of obligation to the lesser races, they saw the choice as acceptable.

Of course, all of this is stupidly subverted because the Forerunners kept samples of the Flood on the Halos, so one mistake is all it takes to start the entire crisis over again.

I'm amazed. This topic might be the first time in 30+ years I've ever seen a single person actually defend the USPS.

Usually everyone shits on them completely, talk about how it should be shut down to stop draining taxpayer resources (or just privatized to function more like FedEx or the like), and generally how it's mostly worthless in a digital age and how better alternatives already exist for nearly every use.

Even people who tend to argue that it's necessary for public welfare tend to admit that it's catastrophically mismanaged and desperately needs massive overhaul and reform to fix its countless problems.

I was born BEFORE 1995 and think that he's done his best to TEAR this country down by turning people against one another, over one subject or another.

That was happening long before he was elected, and would still be happening even if he never ran for office in the first place. He's just the latest in a long string of milestones in the slow and probably inevitable decline of political discourse in the US.

Some people have suggested the rise of the Internet is to blame. Basically, people who spend all their time being assholes to each other on the Internet are slowly losing anything resembling tact and human empathy, so we've basically reached the point where we can't stop being assholes, even in contexts we used to see as being more deserving of respect and politeness. Years ago people would support a President even if they disagreed with their politics, now no one hesitates to call the President an asshole or an incompetent or borderline criminal. And I don't just mean Trump - people have been getting more and more savage with every President every term for the last 20 years or so.

Though personally, I tend to suspect that the mindset of the nation shifted during the Vietnam War, when people stopped having faith in the nation as a whole and have slowly become more and more cynical ever since. When polls show that more Americans believe that Elvis faked his death and is still alive than who believe our government as as whole (regardless of who is President) has our best interests at heart, something has gone seriously wrong somewhere. And that growing distrust and dissatisfaction in general just sort of eats away at the pretense of propriety, until everyone basically shits on the idea of respecting the office even if you don't respect the person who holds it.

The rise of the 24-hour news cycle and the polarizing effect of biased political pundits probably play a role as well, as US politics have effectively become the Console War of the modern generation, as everybody picks a side and then just attacks anyone who dares to have a different opinion. When you choose your side, only really get news from sources that already agree with your pre-established bias, and then dismiss and insult anyone on "the other side", you're never really forced to confront your own flawed assumptions, and will never change anyone else's mind. And everyone involved - on both sides - pretty much winds up looking like an asshole and a parrot who can't think for themselves.

And if you're reaction to any of this was "Yeah, but the other side totally do that and are way worse", you're absolutely part of the problem.

If Halo is a weapon to destroy most life in the galaxy to stop the spread of the flood... umm, what's wrong with the flood at that point? I mean; that's like killing someone to prevent them getting murdered... no?

Sapient life. It doesn't kill lower lifeforms.

If you kill everything the Flood feed on now, and thus starve the Flood into extinction, then future species will evolve and thrive and need never fear the Flood. But if you let the Flood spread across the entire galaxy unchecked, and do nothing to stop it, it basically leaves all life doomed forever.

Also, the original plan the Forerunners had was to hide away while the Halos fired and then pop back out to repopulate the universe, and they were actually trying to archive various species in Shield Worlds and in The Ark, but shit went wrong (at least partly because they were betrayed by their own AI, and partly because they were having political disagreements right up to the very end), and things didn't quite work out the way they'd intended.

It's also worth remembering that the plot of the original games and the plot of the games now are technically different, because 343's version of the story is different from what Bungie originally intended. So the reasons for why certain things turned out the way they did is kind of different based on whether or not you're talking about 343's current version of the story, or the story Bungie had in mind when they were actually writing the original games.

a predestination paradox, which is a generally annoying paradox.

Ehh, done well, I kind of like closed loops and predestination paradoxes.

I suppose it might stem from getting into Greek myth early in life, because half of those seem to involve an oracle making a prophecy that winds up being fulfilled solely because people tried to circumvent it. So my brain was already primed for the idea of time travelers causing the very thing they wanted to prevent, meaning they were always part of history without realizing it, implying that time is actually static and the past cannot be changed.

If anything, it's the simpler time travel methodology by far, since the alternative (being able to change the past) almost always needs to involve multiple branching timelines or the ability to overwrite history and potentially undo your own reality (which generally needs some form of handwaving to explain how you continue to exist or how it makes sense that you'd be able to alter the past if your new future prevents you from ever existing or inventing/gaining access to time travel in the first place).

Though the latter does support one of my favorite theories about time travel - namely, that any world in which time travel is invented would eventually change their own past in such a way as to undo the invention of time travel in their history, "locking" their timeline in place. So by definition, the mere possibility of time travel automatically prevents time travel. Every timeline or reality would autoselect for a history in which time travel is never invented, for whatever reason. Thus functionally making time travel impossible even if the laws of physics allow for its possibility.

keyblader1985 posted...
True, but going that route would leave you with a dozen devices.
No it wouldn't.

Going that route would only leave you with a dozen devices if you want to do a dozen different things. But at that point you are better of with a system that does multiple things, and you're not really talking about the same thing.

Obviously, if you want a phone that can text, take pictures, make shitty TikTok videos, play shitty mobile games, post on shitty video game message boards, look at cute animal pictures on the Internet, translate foreign languages, show maps, direct you to the nearest restaurant, allow you to digitally pay for things, control the locks on your house, and let you watch movies or listen to music, then yes, a multifaceted smart phone is absolutely going to be the thing you want. But if all you ever want to do is make phone calls, you can easily be better off getting a dedicated phone that doesn't come with all the other crap and nonsense.

Why spend hundreds of dollars for a smart phone and another $50-100 per month for a plan when you can literally spend $10 on a throwaway burner phone and spend about $7 per month to keep it active?

If all he wants to do is make phone calls and occasionally listen to music, that's only two devices, which he doesn't even necessarily need to have on him at the same time, which he can almost certainly get cheaper than an all-in-one system if he's smart about what he buys. On top of which, if he loses or breaks one of those two, he doesn't suffer the catastrophic loss of functionality that someone with a bleeding edge top-of-the-line smartphone does if they lose their phone.

Again, it's mostly a question of what you want. For some people the all-in-one will absolutely be the better choice. For other people, it won't be.

If I remember the scene, Qui-Gon's been stabbed for quite a while before Obi-Wan gets to him, and lightsabers cauterize wounds (which would potentially make it harder to heal), so it's entirely possible that he was already too far Qui-Gone by that point.

Plus, you know, Obi-Wan was barely out of Jedi school at that point. And it's been implied that different Jedi have different levels of skill with different aspects of the Force, so it's also entirely possible that Obi-Wan wasn't good enough to heal the amount of damage he would have needed to in order to save him.

I don't know anyone. I have retreated into my Bunker of Safety and no longer communicate with anyone in the outside world.

Except you losers. But that's because I'm half-convinced you're all just voices in my head anyway.

My dad left when I was 2 and my mom blamed all her mental problems on him, so for most of my life I would probably have killed him if he showed up. Eventually I realized she made alot of crap up, but he still never tried to find us/take care of us. I wouldn't lone him money, but I wouldn't mind meeting him and hearing his side of the story.

Did you try to find him?

There's a lot of ways that story could go, and I could easily see any number of reasons why he might have made no effort to try and find you. It's entirely possible he was convinced you were better off without him in your life. Or if you have no idea where he is now, it's possible he might have wanted to be more of a part of your life, but something happened to him (up to and including death) that made it generally impossible.

Depends on where you live.

In NJ it's pretty much mandatory. But there's probably plenty of places where the population is thin enough and infection rates low enough that no one really cares all that much.

I've been trimming my own hair for like 20 years now. It's not really that hard once you get used to what you're doing.

Hell, we live in the digital age now - there's probably at least a dozen tutorials on YouTube for anyone looking to self-barber.

The bad news is our dumb ass governor, and the dumb ass Mississippi Gaming Commission has decided to allow casinos to reopen at 50% capacity starting on Thursday

The unfortunate fact of life is that, no matter how unsafe it may be in the long run, we literally cannot afford to stay on full lockdown until everything is over, because that will absolutely take months, and by the time we all leave our houses the economy will be a smoking ruin and we'll all be forced to eat our neighbors and form feral tribes that wear rusty car parts for clothes.

Phased opening of businesses and public locations is pretty much an absolute must. The key is just doing it properly, so we continue keeping the curve flattened and don't overwhelm hospitals (ie, everyone ending quarantine all at once basically puts us right back at square one and the entirety of the last few months will effectively have been completely worthless).

Unfortunately, our entire political system has essentially left us with a government designed for extreme stances and token gestures, so for the most part it's incapable of handling things properly either on the federal or state level (and that's an institutional problem, not a political party problem).

I'd tend to agree that casinos shouldn't be the primary business rushing to high-priority returns to work, but I'm sure there are people who would disagree (casino owners, gambling addicts, casino employees who need to get back to work so they have money to eat, etc). But that's going to be the main problem in the coming weeks/months - justifying just which businesses should open and which should stay closed for now. Because it's easy to divide things into "essential" and "non-essential", but much more complicated to get everyone to agree on "pretty important" and "not so important".

TopicSuppose you have a rectangle. Which side length is the width?
ParanoidObsessive

Height is up and down, width is left to right. This is universal. In your picture, (1) is width.

It really only becomes a question if you have a rectangle which has been cut out and is handed to you, so you'd the one who has to hold it a specific way, thus determining which side IS up/down versus left/right. Though in that case I'd probably tend to always put the longer side as the width and the shorter side as the height, because that's how I tend to visualize rectangles (ie, wider than they are high).

It gets slightly more complicated when depth is brought into play and we're talking about physical objects in space, but that's not really a rectangle anymore anyway.

a fact that seems hard to hide when you see photos of him

Yeah, he looks almost exactly like what you'd get if someone used a time machine to drag Stephen King from the past into the present. Or like some sort of clone of him escaped.

I suppose he can get away with it, though, because how many people are going to see pictures of him (at least without already knowing who he is)? He was mostly just trying to avoid that "first impression" sort of deal where people dismiss his work without ever reading it because of their opinions of his dad's work (or because they assume he's only getting published due to nepotism).

and no, we don't need the music video again, PO

Assuming you're talking about the video I'm thinking of, I don't think I've ever posted it for anyone, anywhere. I never really found it interesting enough that I'd be recommending it to other people.

I'm kind of weird like that - I don't really like "nerd culture" videos. It always sort of reeks a bit of "trying too hard" to me, ties into that whole "geek chic" and "fake nerd" aesthetic, and generally just leaves me feeling a bit of second-hard embarrassment.

It might stem at least in part from the fact that I grew up and honed my nerd cred back when you basically had to hide your power level or get crapped on for liking geeky/nerdy things. The idea that singing about how you like sci-fi or fantasy or D&D or whatever somehow makes you cool is so alien to my brain.

That video wouldn't even have occurred to me at all if you hadn't mentioned it.
