Just got my iPod Touch... not sure if I like it, already. I didnt want a ton of extra BS, just a music player. I also didnt want to spend $600 on the 256GB, so got the 128 which is less than my Classic. Might try to find a NIB Classic because it just works. Anyone know of any other with high storage thats relatively cheap?

Even if that were true, if you're only using it as a music player, does it matter what gets disabled?

And what's with people and not liking a product doing more than one thing?

Because a phone is a phone dude. I dont need metric shit-tons of apps. I need it to call. Its nice that it takes pictures as well. As seen in my other thread there.

Hey yeah, thanks. Now I know, after turning it on. The Classic wasnt like this and had Brick Breaker at best. So Im asking for designated MP3 players. Do you know of any?

The screen, as I figured, drains the battery life like shit. I could drive home from Calgary on a charge of my Classic. This is going to have to be plugged-in more often.

how do you go 13 years without knowing what an ipod touch is.

Why overpay for an overcomplicated device that does 100 things if you only want something to do 1 thing?

Doubly so since often things that multitask can sacrifice efficiency so they do all those things mediocre, while a dedicated system may be able to do a much better job because it can focus the entirety of their resources towards that single thing.

I loved my Sansa Fuze, but eventually it stopped working after years of use.
Go on amazon and see my old version is selling used for like $150 (I paid $70 for it new, like a decade ago!) and the new models are $50.

"How can this be?"
Oh....they ruined it. Got rid of the scroll wheel and replaced it with buttons. Ugh....

Apparently Apple must've gotten that wheel trademarked or something, b/c I couldn't find any MP3 players with one anymore, and I will never give Apple one cent of my money.

So I got a cheap $27 one. It's mostly ok...the tiniest bit of static electricity making contact with it will reboot it, though. like...I've accidentally tapped the earbud plug (the plastic part!) and triggered that. I've had the earbuds in and taken off my jacket, and the static in the air has triggered it. Kinda crazy. But whatever, still good otherwise.

True, but going that route would leave you with a dozen devices. A smartphone is a device with nearly unlimited potential that fits in one pocket. A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one. You can still always use a dedicated device if the phone proves inadequate.

I guess the old iPods were cool but yeah, am iPod touch is gonna be a substantially more complex device.

I still have one of these Sansa MP3 players:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sansa_e200_series

They are still cool to me even today because despite their small built-in storage capacity, you can put in a microSD into it. It has an FM tuner. I got Rockbox on it so IDK if it had this feature before, but I have super cool (but complex) EQ controls that are fun to play around with.

But.. that's what he did.

But that has nothing do with dedicated systems being inherently worse as much as it does picking the wrong dedicated system.

If he'd been smart and done the research first, he easily could have saved a ton of money.

keyblader1985 posted...

No it wouldn't.

Going that route would only leave you with a dozen devices if you want to do a dozen different things. But at that point you are better of with a system that does multiple things, and you're not really talking about the same thing.

Obviously, if you want a phone that can text, take pictures, make shitty TikTok videos, play shitty mobile games, post on shitty video game message boards, look at cute animal pictures on the Internet, translate foreign languages, show maps, direct you to the nearest restaurant, allow you to digitally pay for things, control the locks on your house, and let you watch movies or listen to music, then yes, a multifaceted smart phone is absolutely going to be the thing you want. But if all you ever want to do is make phone calls, you can easily be better off getting a dedicated phone that doesn't come with all the other crap and nonsense.

Why spend hundreds of dollars for a smart phone and another $50-100 per month for a plan when you can literally spend $10 on a throwaway burner phone and spend about $7 per month to keep it active?

If all he wants to do is make phone calls and occasionally listen to music, that's only two devices, which he doesn't even necessarily need to have on him at the same time, which he can almost certainly get cheaper than an all-in-one system if he's smart about what he buys. On top of which, if he loses or breaks one of those two, he doesn't suffer the catastrophic loss of functionality that someone with a bleeding edge top-of-the-line smartphone does if they lose their phone.

Again, it's mostly a question of what you want. For some people the all-in-one will absolutely be the better choice. For other people, it won't be.

Oh well. Im just worried about the battery life. My Classic would last an eight-hour drive when it was new. I dont think this one will. Plus it has ~30GB less storage. Everything in my music folder is ~70GB. I havent ripped all my discs, and dont have everything I want thats already released.

I was thinking of things a little more practical than most of those things when I said that. It is very much handy to have a device on hand that's a camera, GPS, notepad, flashlight, music player (while we're on the subject), and more. Any of those can come in handy in daily life.

And low end smartphones can be found for pretty cheap as well. Hell, I'm paying less than twenty bucks a month on my plan.

Yeah but based on your posts in this topic why would you want to deal with iTunes at all? Traditional mp3 players don't require any 3rd party software. Just plug it in and drag your mp3s to the USB drive. Unplug and start using. No need for any extra software or weird file formats.

Well everything I have is already MP3 @ 320 kbps. iTunes IME doesnt work any different than what you described other than it can all be done in one window instead of two. My main issues are the ton of other crap that doesnt pertain to a music player at all loaded into it, the smaller storage and the battery life. So just looking for other recommendations of something with a smaller screen, doesnt have to be colour, and larger storage capacity.

Hey man, the Federal Reserve is working tirelessly 'round the clock to devalue the U.S. dollar as much as it possibly can!
It's not their fault that every other Western country is in a race to the bottom doing the same thing!
Well....it is largely their fault. But they'll never accept blame for anything, so...*shrug*

In any case, most Western currencies have slightly fallen in value vs. the dollar over the past 5 years. Nothing unique about Canada. Doesn't even look like much of a change compared to like...the Euro.
