A lot of women have a hard time understanding that someone born male can simply "claim" to be a woman, because of all the historical discrimination that women have faced over the years over issues of pregnancy among others. Well, alot of feminism was fighting ideas like there being a predisposition in the brain to make females gravitate towards things deemed "girly".

Basically Disney thought they could productize it more than SW already was instead of trying to come up with a compelling story. The only reason people bought old SW merch was because it had a compelling story.
