Hey not bad. Obviously if I can't sell to an agent I'll self publish it. Treasure hunts are universally loved so I think it has a wide appeal. Are there pay to play mechanisms with selling on amazon?

i've been working on making a Victorian manor inspired housemod for Morrowind on and off for the last few years. it's the first and only mod i've ever worked on, but i've put a lot of effort and detail into it, and learned a shit ton about modding in the process, and i hope to get it done soon and do other mods as well. there are a few more housemod ideas i have in mind for both Morrowind and Skyim, with quests to go with some of them. and i also have ideas for making some custom furniture and room tile meshes that i would eventually like to release as modders' resources.

That's really cool. I think creative outlets are always a good thing. Gives you something to work towards and most things are impossible to perfect so interest in it will keep you moving.

Industry? The fact you know stuff no one else does helps, but they can train someone so it doesn't help that much. But if you can show business as a direct result of what you're doing that you believe goes beyond what you were originally paid for, I see no problem in bringing that up.

If one of my direct reports ever did that, I'd happily take it into consideration.

No don't do this. They'll get upset that you were interviewing and hold that against you. When you get a better offer, if you still want to stay at your current job you just ask your current job for more money and present them with market data for your role. If they say no, then you insist. If they still say no, you quit.

wow, as someone whose ongoing high fantasy/arcanepunk project is heavily steeped in sociopolitcal allegory and commentary, this video that just popped up in my youtube subs about sociological storytelling was very fascinating and helpful, "Isaac Asimov, Game of Thrones: How to Write Sociological Stories":

i love ASoIaF, and the sort of political intrigue it has, as well as the blend of psychological and sociological storytelling it has. and i own the first Foundation novel, but i have yet to get to reading it. i think i should probably do that soon.

Keeping an allegory up is tough! Especially in a long form genre like fantasy. Kudos to those that can do it

I'll have a good idea for some kind of thing, but then it just falls flat because I can't figure out how to make the effects or other components of what I'm ...allegorizing...fit correctly.

Wondering if you could save a word on that last sentence. "Suddenly" always feels like it "un-suddenly's" anything you put after it but that's probably personal taste.

i wrote a few short stories back in like high school and when i was younger. i thought they were fun to do. the only one i've written recently was that western themed short story i was talking about earlier that was for the "main character goes to the grocery store" prompt in the short lived writing prompt challenge thread here on CE awhile back. i still have the story saved to my google drive if you are interested.

Oh, I know. Just the last few weeks before halloween I never get any writing done because I make my costumes from scratch with molding plastic and lots of spackle and hot glue and paint. I always take a hiatus around this time, and after our big party, hit the writing again. It's a good break for me to work with my hands and figure out upcoming plot threads and stuff.

What costume are you making? My fam is going as the flinstones. Making our own as well

Maybe. I dunno. I have so many ideas for games now! And the games industry has been much more receptive to my weird shit than the traditional literary world.

Right on! The literary world definitely has more constraints on it since there's only so much bookshelf space

ah writing... havent tried writing like that since my literature class where we did writing exercises.

for some reason, i vomit on my papers struggling to formulate thoughts and insight & regurgitate textbooks. then weeks later i actually get in the zone for writing them.

not sure why its like im in a nonwriting mood mostly for graded papers and when i do get interested, its usually too late. oh well...

Man I hated writing in school, english was my least favorite class, etc etc.

Write for fun. It's very liberating writing the story only you want to hear, because maybe after a few revisions, everyone else will want to hear it too.

I'm not sure what any of that means but anything that gets you writing is fun.

Fanfics seem enjoyable because you don't have to worry so much about backstory if you assume the reader has read the canon.

because there's literally no way they could ever have a black person speak in defense of their values without someone being able to say this...so we couldn't falsify the charge in any way....

And I just wanna say the whole process of writing a book is so different than what I'm used to. My main kinds of writing in the past have either been short fiction, or RP stuff, and in both of those forms you write a little, and then go back and edit fairly quickly. With the novel, it feels weird to just keep pressing onward. At first I didn't want to do it. I'd stop and want to go back and edit every few chapters. But I realized that saving editing for when you're done with the first draft is the way to go. You need that momentum to carry you forward

yeah if I don't turn off the editor, I'll never get through the first chapter

Got about 400 words last night...still noodling with some new ideas but I might have planted a decent seed

Time will tell.

What's a good day of writing for everyone? I can get 2k sometimes, but if I hit 1000 I feel good.

man 10 more days until I've let my book rest a month...

oh yeah, Chuck Palahniuk. i have that one saved to my "watch later" playlist on youtube. i'm not too big a fan of Joe Rogan or anything, but i have watched or listened to a few JREs that had on people i'm interested in. NdGT, Maynard James Keenan, Elon Musk, Tommy Chong, etc. i gotta get around to this one, definitely.

i agree that doing it through character POV instead of narrative is usually a good choice, but with the caveat that you want to make sure that characters don't go overboard in discussing or pointing out things that the reader needs to learn and be acquainted with, but that are mundane and/or routine to the characters themselves. like in real life, if someone mentions something to someone else about needing to stop at the bank, the other person is never going to be like "oh, you mean the financial institution that accepts deposits from the public and creates credit?" sometimes worldbuilding done through dialogue can end up like that if you are not being careful about it. it might be something that the reader needs to know, but you have to keep in mind that it's something that the characters themselves already know and it's not something that an explanation for would necessarily come up in casual conversation.

i love worldbuilding and i'd like to think i'm pretty good at it lol. it's the phase of my project that i am the deepest into right now, alongside outlining the narrative. i get an immense feeling of satisfaction when i am plotting out a web of different historical events and aspects of society and such, and something from one thing sparks an idea in another thing and lets me hammer out the strand that connects things together. when it really fits and when the different strands really fall into place, it's a feeling almost like i am discovering a history rather than creating it. it's one of the best feelings i get from creative writing tbh. and it tends to happen a lot in the project i've been working on lol, because there is a lot of interconnected stuff that i'm having to figure out and piece together. i'm all over the place with it, and i am slowly but surely tying it all together.

thats cool - I like the idea of creating vast histories and I guess I should take back a bit of what I said about not liking world building...

because I love the GoT books including all the backstory and history. But its kind of a one off since I don't tend to like fantasy too much.

I just hate the fact that ideas are so cheap. Driving to work takes me about an hour in the morning and I usually come up with at least one idea that I want to write about before making it to the office...

and now I have a bunch I can't choose from :(

I think its mainly because I hate reading those parts of books. I mean, a little description is definitely needed, but my mind is good enough to fill in the gaps better than over described verbs.

I usually build the world through character POV instead of narrating but it gets to be boring talking about how the person sees a particular setting after a paragraph or two at the most.

I hate adjectives and adverbs in prose and I was pleased to find on my first draft I limited my use quite a bit.
