the game Levelhead, which is a Mario Maker clone, has one that I think is good and fits your description.

it's called Zipper. basically, you can press A (well SNES A, XBox B) to teleport horizontally forward 4 blocks. this lets you pass through up to 3 blocks worth of walls. there are special metallic walls that can't be passed through.

this means that places where it can be used are not at all obvious until the player understands how the ability works, though they can wonder how they're supposed to get to the other side of what appears to be solid wall. also the noticably special walls being the thing that restricts your movement rather than allows it means that the player is drawn to the wrong thing. (so, maybe a good idea can be to invert the ability: it lets you go "anywhere" except certain places.)

The other employees got paid on the snowstorm day...basically it was a paid day off
no, not "basically". if it was a "snowstorm day", so no one could work but still got paid, that's not officially a day off. that's a work day that no one was able to work. no one is *entitled* to have that day off, they just were not able to perform any work that day.

(I am assuming salaried employees though; hourly employees would not get paid on a snow day anyway, so that must be what you're talking about.)

where I work, we can have both of these kind of days off:
  • day off because we're physically unable to work due to unforseen causes
  • paid days off as a job perk
the second one would require a vac. day refund and the first would not

I would love to see another Shinobi game, almost seems like one of Sega's long forgotten franchises. Granted, they had a game about 8 years ago, but it really hasn't had any real traction since 2003.

Anachronox is another game I would love if they continued the story of, even though it isn't technically a "series" (it was supposed to be, but ION Storm shutdown after the first game was released).
both good ones. I almost was going to say Shinobi but forgot.

Other way around, sure refunding the day would be fine, but youd have to talk with the HR and work something out, it shouldnt be automatically
if this is a day off that the company is giving employees, then it would *have* to be automatically refunded, or else you wouldn't have received the value to which you're entitled. (right?)

if the office is closed for unforseen reasons, that's different because the company is not giving anyone a "day off", there's just no work available.

(HR will have a vacation day tally, and accounting will have a vacation pay accumulation. they can't just reduce these values willy-nilly.)

B if the office is closed for an unexpected reason (the company is not giving you a day off, they just have nothing for you to do)

A if the company decided to make some random day a day off (the company is giving you a day off, which has value, and you haven't received that value unless your vac. day is refunded)

pretty sure this is not just how it should be, but how it is, at least where I work. vacation days and official days off actually have monetary value and can't just be ignored.

it makes sense. being introduced to new systems is interesting. mastering those systems once you understand them can be fun too, but it's not as interesting as figuring them out for the first time.

the next stage after that is worse though. being introduced to new systems stops being interesting, since they're all really derivatives of each other. then it takes something truly unique to keep your interest even for a short time.

it's good in a lot of ways, but also flawed as well

my main two gripes are:
  • too short/small scale. it's especially noticeable on subsequent playthroughs just how little there is to the main game. it seems interesting at first since it's all new and "who knows what's out there", but once you've seen the limited scale, you realize there's not really that much there.
  • poor sound effects quality. something Bioware and even more so Black Isle did great was sound effects. (Particularly in BG and especially IWD). but the sounds in PoE are very very dull and generic sounding. they don't sound bad necessarily, but overall the audio experience ends up really underwhelming. to me this was a key important part of the infinity engine games that most people don't think about and PoE completely missed.
other than that, pretty good characters, pretty good combat, pretty good story, pretty replayable except for the shortness/small-scale problem. it has DLC that was supposed to be good but I never played, and now a sequel that's also supposed to be good but haven't played.

(brag alert, sorry, but I'm pretty proud of this.) my 7yo nephew has already beaten Zelda 1 (which is something I've never done), Metroid 1, Megaman 2, SMB2, SMW, Yoshi's Island, and Super Metroid. he's been attempting LttP, and made it to the Dark World, but the battery is shot so he keeps losing his progress.

just dug through a bunch of his "merchandise" on amazon, since my nephews like him and want some. but holy crap... talk about high-priced garbage. like, you've probably seen something overpriced before, but this is abysmally poor quality crap priced ridiculously high. you'd think it'd either be high priced and relatively good quality, or low priced and relatively low quality, but nope, this is absurdly priced and absurdly low quality.

peppa pig merch seems of much higher quality and is much more reasonably priced, though it seems like it's aimed more for girls.

not sure what you meant here, but yes, it sort of has to stop being a "hobby" once you're doing it constantly as a profession, but it doesn't have to become something you hate. maybe you can't do it leisurely anymore, but you can still love being great at it and improving at it. a good profession/skill has basically an infinite progression curve. you can spend your entire life getting better at it and still have more to learn after decades.

played through 1-3 recently and was pretty disillusioned by them... they barely felt like games. 2 was the better of them, but... something about them. they didn't feel like games. the actual gameplay is almost non-existent and really all it boils down to is whether you can survive an annoying gauntlet of annoying enemies. parts of 3 were especially like that near the end, with really long sections that you had to barely get hit at all in since there's almost no health. very unenjoyable "gameplay" if that can even be called gameplay.

deflecting in Sekiro is not as hard as parrying in Dark Souls. the timing is way easier, and if you don't time it right you're just blocking instead, whereas in DS you take the hit (I think with slightly reduced damage).

the hard part is more about when to deflect and when to do other things. you have to learn basically every attack the enemy can make and come up with suitable responses. that attack means I jump, that attack means I deflect three times, that attack means I back off for a second and then get a hit in, that attack means I circle around and strike from behind, etc.etc. (and not always only 1 way to respond either). (though it is true that some fights basically are deflect forever until you win.)

also, some bosses you need to keep the pressure on them, and other bosses you need to avoid them and only get hits in when you can.

I don't like the concept of smart/not-smart honestly. I think it usually actually comes down to patience not something like IQ. I think some people have been told so many times that they're not smart that they've lost all willingness to even try as soon as something seems even the tiniest bit complicated, and it triggers a sort of anxiety in them. if you can get them to actually try, anyone can understand anything if both people have the patience for working through it.

ok, I do agree that complaints about DS2 are exaggerated. depending what you're looking for, 2 is arguably the best of the three. it has by far the most character variability, and is also a much longer game, especially taking DLC into account.

I didn't like it at first either. It has easily the most frustrating combat. The level design part I don't care about all that much. Its levels feel "video gamey" whereas DS1 and DS3 have such artistically amazing levels, but it's not that big a deal. the first half of DS1 had the "intricate pathways that interconnect areas in unexpected ways" thing, but it's not that important (maybe artistically).

It has more items, more levels, and really just more gameplay than the other two.

(in fact... just realizing that maybe Lavos from Chrono Trigger could be a metaphor for this... maybe?)

fossil fuels are basically a natural booby trap waiting underground millenia after millenia to be sprung when civilization finally progressed far enough. I don't see how that could have been avoided. and now there's basically nothing we can do about it except try to plan to survive the coming changes.
