| Sahuagin 11/03/19 9:04:39 PM #14 | Lokarin posted... Navigation and Puzzle Solving (Bed of Chaos) - "small monsters" and "large monsters" is waay too vague a categorization of the game's enemies - 4 kings being about timing is definitely hard to agree with. 4 kings is normally thought of as a DPS fight. either you can DPS them fast enough to not be overwhelmed or you can't. if you're saying you can fight them even when they've all spawned, and you can survive because you know the right timing, that might be interesting. - but even then, timing is not particularly specific to 4 kings. timing is a fundamental part of everything the player does, from movement, to all forms combat, to healing, etc. every single thing the player does is about timing. a problem here is that at least 2 of these 4 bosses are broken. none of them are designed well at all, and so they end up being about nothing. 4 kings is about DPS. Seethe is about nothing since he's too easy. Nito is maybe about dealing with adds and AOE, but he's also kind of about nothing since he's too easy since his HP is so low. Bed of Chaos is about nothing because it's just throw yourself at RNG till you win (with maybe a little bit that blocking, caution, and timing can help, but usually not.) --- |

| Sahuagin 11/03/19 7:12:00 PM #26 | Jen0125 posted... Nothing about this movie screamed "woke" to me. Movies can have a majority female cast and not have it be for whatever negative reasons men on the internet like to complain about. I generally agree, and I don't want to get bogged down in an argument about it, but the little I know is that there were "phony" tweets from reviewers (at least 10) that were all obviously copied from the same studio talking points. the main talking points were: - best Terminator since T2 - women kick ass even more than Arnie - does to Terminator what The Force Awakens did for Star Wars and of course no mention of: - what was the movie like? - how was the story? - anything positive to say about Arnie? (note: this is not really a reason for me to dislike the movie or avoid seeing it) (also note: it's maybe not suspicious for one or two reviewers to say this. it is definitely suspicious for 10 reviewers to all tweet basically the three top points verbatim while avoiding the three bottom points.) (final note: that the movie was "marketed" this way doesn't mean the movie was produced with similar intentions; I'd have to see it first) --- |

| Topic | What's with These Simulator Games? |
| Sahuagin 11/03/19 2:57:27 AM #5 | depends what kinds of games they are. there's full sims like X-Plane 11, or Command: Modern Air / Naval Operations. or there's like the Tycoon games that are more just for fun. a full sim of 911 operator would be great. same with construction and airport, though exactly what that would be simulating is a bit iffy. Truck Driving sims, I sort of agree. Unless maybe if it was extremely detailed, there's not a lot going on there. The one I've tried was not that great. Might be better with a wheel. Would also be better if you were driving around areas you new IRL. --- |

Bombadil though is like injecting another story into the middle of this one. (indeed reading about it, much of that stuff that happened in the Shire (Barrow Downs, Barrow Wights, Bombadil, Old Man Willow) was apparently borrowed from some other source and included only to have a place to continue those ideas of his. So they are literally injected out of nowhere. (Though I personally really liked the Barrow Downs and Barrow Wights).) --- |

| Topic | fuck race conditions. |
| Sahuagin 11/02/19 5:39:26 PM #17 | Lokarin posted... I'm a dullard, but maybe this will help? that problem seems more related to networking. at lower levels, sending packets uses UDP (nicknamed "unreliable data protocol") where there is never a guarantee that anything you send will be received at the other end, and in fact you will never know if it was or wasn't received. built on top of this is TCP, which is a reliable protocol and has features designed to fix this issue. (in particular, confirmations that messages are being received, as well as timeouts so that if a confirmation is missed, the message can be sent again, as well as sequence numbers so that messages arriving out of order or with duplicates can always be properly assembled and any missing pieces can be re-requested.) --- |

Interesting, but it seems like outcome dependent events should be single-threaded for that exact reason... even if it creates a small bottleneck for the multithreading events before it any time two processes try to share a resource (usually memory), the same problems emerge, so it doesn't necessarily require multi-threading Judgmenl posted... You cannot guarantee that everything is single threaded. what language and API? not the best solution, but a starting point, can you just spin with "while file exists" or something? are you sure there isn't a callback function you can pass, or a promise or something (or use await, depending on the language)? --- |

| Topic | fuck race conditions. |
| Sahuagin 11/02/19 12:15:45 AM #10 | Lokarin posted... I don't understand the usage of race in this context. if you use multi-threading, or other scenarios where the same code can be executed more than once simultaneously by two difference threads/processes, the actual order in which the instructions execute is unknown (each execution context will occur in its own order, but they will all be interleaved together in some random way). in particular this means that you can't rely on a read of a variable staying true until the next instruction (at least if there are also writes to that variable, which is one reason why immutability (readonly variables) is desirable). race condition specifically is saying "whoever gets there first wins", and the problem is you never know who will get there first. --- |

| Sahuagin 11/01/19 9:12:07 PM #26 | Bulbasaur posted... it's just like anything, you do it often enough and you get good at it. you don't need a useless arm and hand, train it, and have two superior arms and hands I think I assumed that one's off-hand was permanently inferior. maybe you could train it to be better than it is now (it's recommended to do 10% more reps on your weak side for example), but it will always be your off-hand and never really work properly compared to your main hand. from the sound of it, no, either hand can do anything you train it to do. there's just a tendency to default to training your right hand up first, and your dominant hand will tend to always be better, but only because it will tend to get more practice automatically, even if you train your off-hand too. --- |

If the photograph was changing to fit the new timeline why didn't Marty's memory of his siblings fade along with the photograph of them? more than his memory was fading, his entire existence was fading. the photo is transitioning from one state to another because it still existed in the new timeline. Marty didn't have a second state to transition into and was being removed altogether. Why do George and Lorraine wait until their 3rd child to name one in honor of the person that helped get them together? doesn't really need an explanation In part 2 Doc says if they go to 2015 again it will be a different 2015. So why was Biff able to return the Delorian to the same timeline he left from, after his actions in 1955 created a new timeline in which Doc never built it? to be able to get the time machine back so that Marty and Doc could use it (ie: plot reasons). note that old Biff is erased from existence moments after arriving. Marty traveled to 11/5/1955 and stayed until 11/12. Future Biff travels to 11/12/1955 and returns the same day. Marty had 7 days before the timeline changes reach his departure date in 1985. Why don't Biff's timeline changes take 14 days to propagate to 2015? probably just plot reasons What happened to the original Jennifer when the timeline she was left in got overwritten after Marty burned the almanac? yes? can't decipher what you're asking. she would have transitioned from one state to another, or something, yes. --- |
