a bit unrelated but this is one of the reasons i really do like Mahouka.
the amount of detail on how magic families work, how they progressed, etc is fully detailed in that series, including the fact that there was inbreeding to keep certain magical traits dominant/pure/secret. quirks would definitely go the same route.

mind you, mahouka spends so much time explaining everything that the glossary is like 5 pages by volume 3 and it's STILL not enough. it's a relatively unique beast on this front, even if it is going on a weird direction by volume 8.

yeah mahouka is a pretty cool series. I've only seen the anime but I read a lot about the novels and what kind of extra details were cut and such. seems very interesting. some people don't like that kind of series where the main character is an overpowered lunatic who god stomps everything but for me it can be very entertaining if it's done well.

Now there's an ensemble cast with some character development.

haikyu is great, possibly one of the greatest anime, but the development happens over multiple seasons

do you honestly believe the foolmo you have seen in this topic would be capable of watching the show long enough without complaining that the characters were never developed in the first 5 episodes

fair enough.

I still think it's bizarre to have this entire concept going on in the background and the author never explicitly brings it up in any way. we have stuff like bakugo and todoroki's parents mixing quirks to create more powerful quirks, so it does seem like he has put thought into the idea of how quirks are passed down from one generation to the other.

but then again this doesn't mean he has put too much thought into the fact that two parents with the same quirk must have both gotten it somehow, especially when drawing very brief scenes for side characters that were only a few panels long. really makes it feel more like an oversight than anything intentional and it'll be hard for me to give credit to the author if he never addresses it in the story or even in his side materials which tend to contain a lot of notes and detailed info.

Oh I could definitely see inbreeding being a thing in that world, to keep the quirk line "pure"

yeah this was kinda my take on it when I think about it for more than a few minutes. I know in some classical japanese cultures they have portrayed this idea of having a main and a branch family who sort of intermarry. similar to european nobility the idea I guess is to consolidate the power, wealth, and influence within the same family.

so if you have these distantly related frog quirk family members I guess it makes sense that they would marry within their own clan to prevent anyone else from getting the frog quirk, for example.

one legit bizarre thing about my hero academia is how we're told quirks are either mutations, or they are inherited from the parents... but then often times we'll see that side joke characters have two parents with the same quirk. tsu has two frog-like parents, although one is more froggy than the other. hagakure has two invisible parents though which is very notable. it makes it seem like their parents must have been related and they are inbred? but the author never addresses this directly so it's hard to say if he just didn't think it through to the logical conclusion or if he did it intentionally but didn't want to draw attention to it.

this was and still is one of my big issues with the series for sure. especially because the initial premise in the first episode sells you this concept of him potentially becoming a batman like character (no powers, exceptional ability to study and analyze heroes) and there are some elements of this which come into play later (like his ability to analyze situations and come up with good plans) but it's all undercut by the fact that he has the strongest superpower in the world.

I'm going to devolve this into asking who everybody's favorite characters in each are

Iida is one of my favorite characters early on but he does get benched quite a bit or treated like a fourth tier joke character as things progress. That doesn't make me like him any less, but it does make me wish the author would do him justice more often.

I like Tsu but more for superficial reasons. Any dramatic moment that is supposed to revolve around her I'm more just like.... ehhhh... Her core characterization, design, and 'charisma' factor are all pretty solid though. She's simple, quirky, and adorable in a way that makes you want to root for her. Hard to put 'charisma' into words beyond that.

Mina, Kirishima, Aoyama are all fairly solid for their own reasons. Similar to Tsu mentioned above I think they are best when the author keeps it simple and sticks to their core personality. Exception to that being Kirishima. I think his serious moments are actually pretty cool and rewarding. Uraraka is pretty solid as far as shounen female leads go.

A lot of the other classmates are really good in that simple way, but I consider them below the ones I've needed to mention explicitly. I don't hate or love Todoroki. I understand why he's popular but he's not really for me. Deku I think is fine as a protagonist but I don't consider him to be anything special.

Bakugo is probably one of the funniest characters on the show, but it's hard to count him among my favorites. I still absolutely think the first 5 or 6 episodes that try to treat him seriously and spend way too much time on his characterization are some of the worst bits of the entire series. That's a huge negative mark which is difficult to erase.

One thing I like in general about the show is how the cast rotates in and out of the spotlight. So generally each arc features Deku + (Support) as the main players... but the supporting roles aren't the same people every time. This does cause issues like with Iida mentioned above getting sidelined, but as a separate idea from that complaint it's still a cool concept. Plus it's nicer than having Todoroki as a central figure in every arc just because he's popular. That's what most other shounen anime would be doing with the same material.

.

One Punch Man is a bit harder to give as detailed of a response. I don't think any of the characters really jumped out at me immediately so I didn't have a strong attachment to them at the time. I also watched it before My Hero Academia so it's less fresh in my mind, especially without getting additional seasons to refresh me on things. Didn't really love Saitama and I found Genos to be somewhat annoying.

A lot of people will give Mumen Rider as the easy answer but he really only has maybe one great scene? Everything else we're supposed to just cheer about him showing up because we know who he is and we like him. If I specifically remembered any of the other side characters I could comment on those, but I think the fact that none of them made a strong impression on me probably speaks for itself.

Even though I rated One Punch Man above MHA when I watched them both, I don't think I valued OPM for the characters.

It doesn't invert any expectations.

I think the sports festival is actually a pretty good example of this and there are some other smaller ones, so people who think that it inverts expectations do have a fair bit of ground to stand on. I mean if you look on the bracket deku literally starts on one half and bakugo on the exact opposite end. The idea that anything other than a Deku x Bakugo final battle happens is a pretty huge inversion, especially if you look up Deku's side of the bracket and see he's facing a series of rivals in reverse order to when he met them (Shinso during the sports festival, Todoroki at the start of school, Iida just before school, Bakugo since he was a child). To me that's a clear example of the show setting up an expectation (the main character almost always wins or makes it to the finals) and then inverting it (deku loses in the second round).

The most recent episode also has Bakugo, Deku, and all the other 'major' characters passing the first stage of the exam early on. The only other tertiary character of importance left is Iida and we're set up with a scene that makes it look like it'll be about him bringing the class together, but then Aoyama of all people does it. Even the fact that the dramatic final moments of the exam are given to someone other than the main character is a bit of an inverted expectation for a shounen series.

I think when people are talking about inverted expectations they are talking about moments like this, rather than meta story. Though there are definitely situations where other shounen have given big moments to joke characters at times, so I can also see your point of view as well here. Just trying to highlight where the other side is coming from.

but to somehow infer that one story arc being bad means that every story arc for the entire rest of the series has to be bad in the same way is completely moronic

What if the "somehow" is that everyone raves for months about how brilliant it is and literally not 1 person has ever admitted that S1 is weak, let alone sucks ass, until your post.

I am not exaggerating when I say you are the only person I have seen who thinks S1 sucks but likes the rest (and in general admits a wide range of quality across arcs).

That's a somewhat complicated question to answer. Or, at least, it has several parts that all work together.

So...

1. Most people when they say 'it gets better' are essentially saying that season 1 is an x, while season 2 and beyond are an x + y rating. This is more or less the exact same statement I've made, but their x and y values are all different.

2. This is because most people who rate stuff don't use the full rating scale effectively. So to them they'll usually bottom out at a 7/10 and give out 9 and 10's pretty liberally. So them saying season 1 is a 7 or an 8 and then later seasons are a 10 is more difficult to suss out. But, at the end of the day, the core argument is still the same as mine.

3. In addition to that, their experience might differ from mine. Not only is the gap more narrow, but the numbers I mentioned above are higher for this reason and not just because they aren't using the full scale. Their argument is really 'season 1 is good, but season 2 is really good!' Comparing that to my 'season 1 was fine overall with a particularly awful opening arc, but the later seasons are just inconsistent with mediocre to good materials.' In my full review of the show I actually said something along the lines of 'this show isn't exceptionally good but it has a bizarre quality that made me want to keep watching.' I rated it lower than Himouto Umaro Chan which I described as 'trash.' So overall my scores are going to be more on the lower end, and others will have scores on the higher.

Lastly, and probably most concisely...

foolm0r0n posted...

We've been through this so many times before. It's just completely illogical to trust you guys.

The real discussion is about this, and not so much about what specific rating anyone has given to the series. Your argument isn't really 'People told me JoJo gets better and they were wrong, therefore no show that starts off bad can ever get good.' It was probably unfair of me to simplify it down to that level. Your argument is really 'Board 8 has recommended me bland and mediocre stuff, forcing me to invest extra time and effort, only to find that it never gets better. Because of this, I'm not trusting board 8 anymore.'

Which, to be fair, I don't normally trust board 8's recommendations either so I can't argue against that.

lol

series is pretty good but also very inconsistent

intro arc: 2/10 at best (awful introduction to the premise, too much focus on bakugo's shallow character)
USJ: 8/10
sports festival first half: 6/10
sports festival second half: 8/10
stain: 5/10
finals: 5/10
season 2 wrap up: 3/10
training camp: 9/10
rescue: 7/10
license first half: 6/10 manga, 3/10 anime (really, really badly adapted)

manga only...
license second half: 6 or 7/10
bakugo vs deku: 8/10
seniors and internships intro: 7/10

overhaul stuff is kinda difficult to break down piece by piece because it's made up of a lot of different parts. some go together well and were executed nicely. others were clunky and hard to follow. the action scenes in the manga suffer from this especially. lots of clunky scenes across all of the arcs mentioned above where it can be annoying to try and figure out what the hell horikoshi is trying to show us.

anyway the notable standout above is probably my low rating of the stain arc which a lot of people love but probably for all of the wrong reasons. I get the feeling people don't understand his character at all, but keep in mind he basically just shows up, vaguely disagrees with another villain without giving too much context for why and how they disagree, and then he gets promptly defeated and never shows up to do anything relevant again.

series definitely "gets better" in the sense that the first arc is completely awful, but I doubt anyone with more than 2 brain cells would dispute that. the series as a whole does follow the general pattern of having a lull of weak or mediocre storylines with brief upswings, but to somehow infer that one story arc being bad means that every story arc for the entire rest of the series has to be bad in the same way is completely moronic.

in order for the phrase 'status effects are viable' to have significance, the game has to actually have builds in the first place. persona Q doesn't have them. so it's not like you can 'build' a character to use status effects and be rewarded for it. you just either equip a persona that has them, or you don't.

high build diversity which can be fairly unforgiving in the earlier titles if you mess up a character

Yeah this was a big part of why I dropped EO1. I generally dislike looking stuff up for games I'm playing for the first time, but in EO1 it felt like the only way to find out a skill was utter garbage was to skill in to it and find out the hard way... which I would be fine with if there was any way to respec, but to the point I got I saw no sign of such a feature. (I've since looked it up and found you can respec for a 10 level loss which feels pretty brutal but at least it's an option I guess.)

respec has always been an option in the games, but they toned down the punishment with each subsequent title. the most recent game is basically less than a slap on the wrist to change up your build.

I'm not really in love with that conceptually because it means you can tune your party for each specific stratum or boss without losing much progress. I think the game should have done more to reward a player that can construct a solid party that does well against a variety of environments and encounters.

still, EO5 is probably the best entry in the series since EO 1/2. I was actually surprised at how much I liked it because of how different the core system and rule set are for making builds and such. they went probably further away from the standard formula than any previous game. but they did A LOT to make the exploration and difficulty feel more similar to previous titles, and coming from someone that hated how dumb and simple EO4 was, this was a refreshing return to what the series should be about.

appeal of the etrian odssey series

create your own characters from scratch
complex skill system which allows you to customize builds
high build diversity which can be fairly unforgiving in the earlier titles if you mess up a character, but in general allows for a ton of different strategies to approach the same content
incredible party synergy well above almost any other RPG I can think of
the above two points combine in a great way which make it so that you have to actually construct a party out of builds that you also fully customize, and the party composition itself is an added layer of strategy

this marriage of micro and macro strategy, and lack of randomized advancement elements, make it so

that you are fully given the ability to design your own team --
the there are many different viable teams --
any spot on the roster can be tweaked in ways that make them feel unique to your personal design preference --
changing one person or even one major skill in your entire party line up can change the entire strength or playstyle of the composition --
the list goes on and on with this point, to the extent that I needed to separate it into its own entire list instead of just one entry

status effects are viable
having attackers that fill different roles actually matters, you'll have a much harder time if you create a team that is designed to win every encounter by auto attacking
tanks are viable and can be damn near essential,
but because of the free design of the game you can also build comps that don't rely on a tank

there's probably a lot more that I'm missing just off the top of my head, but the games are basically unique and excel in a lot of categories that most other RPGs can't even hope to compete.

anyway, long story short, persona Q contains NONE OF THE ELEMENTS FEATURED ON THE ABOVE LIST

I told them that while I'm not religious, I would treat their books with respect because I know how meaningful it is to them.

so why are you asking us if you're the kind of person who goes back on their word or not? shouldn't that be something you already know?

very excited for this card

https://i.redd.it/gx0ss5tcsid11.png

not sure if it really comes across as very powerful or impactful but playing a classic style hunter has been nearly impossible since quick shot rotated out, and I've been one of the vocal butthurt complainers that we have never gotten a suitable replacement. finally the ability to deal 2 damage for 2 mana again!

this will increase the reach of hunters not quite as much as quick shot (due to the draw ability), but has its own applications where it should be more useful. and, once again, just the added 2 damage of reach that can be played as part of one big damage-to-face turn is something we were missing the cards to pull off for more than a year now.

not sure what her family history is but it's not uncommon for names to have been changed when people immigrated to a new country, as happened with my ancestors. my grandfather's last name was originally some spelling of johansson, but it was changed to johnson when he moved to america as a child.

so basically it's possible there's some dutch last name that sounds similar to docx or is spelled similarly but was changed for arbitrary reasons. guess that really depends on where she lives now and where her family might have been in the past.

they could have also changed the spelling and/or pronunciation of their last name for reasons that are beyond our understanding.

alternately, that really is her last name and I have no clue what it means or why.

ugh containment broken.

Also I didn't read this but i saw libertarian, intelligent, and values thrown together to describe the same thing. I laughed.

the containment topic isn't to stop people from making topics like this, it's supposed to keep posts like yours out of topics like this. can't believe that you guys still haven't figured this out.

Also notable: arena changes and snapshot of buckets for the next update. https://playhearthstone.com/en-us/blog/21964711/developer-insights-12-0-arena-update-with-kris-zierhut

Class cards and spells/weapons have their appearance rate reduced by a fair amount.

Rates and epics will show up a bit less since they get picked more often when offered.

They provided a sample of offering rates and buckets for download.

very cool. this is easily the most transparent arena update we have EVER gotten. I like that they are working on the issue of variety which many players have been pretty annoyed with for the last cycle. still not sure how I feel about them using rates that arbitrarily coincide with the rarity of a card. those values are not really tied to anything, have no basis even in constructed play, and here in arena feel even more pointless. some trash neutral epic that never gets played is being offered significantly less than bonemore because bonemare is a common card? okay then.

I got to talking to him, and I learned he was one of the stuntmen in Batman Forever. He was specifically a thug under the employ of Two-Face, and he appeared in five different action sequences in the movies (for moments apiece).

GranzonEx posted...
Now there's this moment in the scene, you can watch, where he delivers this big booted kick to a thug's chest. And the thug goes off-screen and that's their entire spot in the fight. That was me;

I mean, there's a quick way to spot check the veracity of this entire thing. Did anyone ever go and look for that scene? Do we see the thug who got kicked in the chest? Scarlet, does he actually look like the guy you met IRL? Granzon, does this character actually appear in 5 scenes? Those are some quick ways to determine how much of this story is potentially true, unless the liar was very thorough on their details.
