I'm a longtime Hitman fan

But the truth is, the re-use of maps ends up boring me pretty quick. Funny enough I think it worked much better when it was episodic.

I also give absolutely zero fucks about escalations. They feel like such filler busywork to me.

This is something I agree with as well. It's one of the few games that works as being episodic, because it gives you time to actually master and 100% the content, and by the time you have a new episode comes out.

The only escalation I did was one that unlocked me a silenced sniper, because I'm not even going to attempt a non silenced weapon in the game.

little extra content
I can run through blood money on expert getting silent assassin on almost every level with little effort. because when I bought it in 2006 it was one of the games I got between birthday and christmas, so a lot of it is second nature

the new games, 2016 and 2018, are even worse in that regard. I love them and am having a blast, but who wants to buy a game with less than 8 maps and only a handful of really unique missions for each one? not even close to mainstream
it kinda puts them in a bind. if they made each level a third of its size they'd probably sell more because mainstream audiences would love 3 times as many maps, but they'd also lose a lot of the individuality of the franchise

The appeal of the new ones is actually the massive amount of content for each map, with the unlock system encouraging as many different ways to complete each level as possible. Not to mention the fully fleshed out added missions and the elusive targets that get added every few weeks.

KOTOR, Witcher 3, Oblivion, to name a few games that were full of interesting sidequests. It is a problem in JRPGs though.

KOTOR maybe, i honestly cant remember. witcher 3 had plenty of bullshit fetch quests. and olbivion was only a passable game because of the side quests (if you count guild quests as side quests that is). otherwise it was a slough through portals.

I think the significant thing W3 did was turn those fetch quests into something more. While yeah, you were still doing a fetch quests, the writing was so good that it gave you a reason to do the fetch quests, because there was a very good chance that something that seemed basic was going to evolve into a more involved quest chain with interesting characters and choices to make.

I really feel we live in a fucked up system when a bachelors degree is NOT an adequate qualification for work in a specific field. Sure, you may not be anyones first choice, but at least you should be able to earn a living with said degree, or else the system is just a fucking joke.

I mean, different fields require different amount of training. You wouldn't want there to be untrained doctors out there, just as you wouldn't want untrained clinical psychologists.

Then, any other path in psychology is identical to any other path in the sciences, in terms of amount of training.

I mean an engineer can do engineer stuff with his degree. You would not want a collapsing bridge or flammable electric thing (for example) either...

Even a carpenter! Your wooden bunk bed collapses and its a Mortal Kombat fatality waiting to happen...

My friend is close to his master's right now, and the way he explained it to me was that there's nothing stopping you from just getting a bachelor's and stopping, but you'll be passed over for nearly everyone else.

It's not any "system" that's the problem, it's that so many people went for psych degrees when there was a limited number of jobs to be had, so to distinguish yourself you had to get more education and pretty soon that became the norm.

Meanwhile, we're far from the hitting the upper limits of carpenters (actually trained, skilled carpenters) and engineers, so the minimum training is just fine for getting a job.

people seem very polarized about the game, what really turned you off from it?

A number of things:

- Did a very bad job of teaching you how to play it. It just threw an entire book's worth of tutorial dialogue boxes at you right at the start and introduced so many mechanics while you were still just figuring out the absolute basics. It also threw the entire encyclopedic crafting and levelling system at you so you end up collecting a bunch of nonsense items with no idea what to do with any of it. I found it cumbersome and overwhelming.
An example of a perfect tutorial system to me would be Breath of the Wild. Not really any dialogue or descriptions, it just carefully introduces things at the beginning and invites you to use them. You learn through trial and error, not memorising what you read earlier.
- Sidequests were yet again very underwhelming. They did a better job than the first Xenoblade Chronicles but I still felt like I wasn't really invested in any of it.
- The combat started off dull and clunky and graduated into a bit like playing DDR, where you're just trying to time your button presses based on when colours pop up on screen.
- Speaking of combat, there's just so much of it. Why does it take so long to beat basic canon fodder? It's like a 5 minute battle every time even if you're just facing some low level street rats. The only way to actually get anywhere in a reasonable time is to avoid all battles.
- They didn't seem to give much thought to where the high level enemies are on the map. Maybe this was deliberate, but there's only so many times I enjoy being one-shotted by a level 90 giant bird because he happened to see me from about 900metres away and got aggro'd.
- The accents. I understand American fans really enjoyed this aspect but as a Brit I could not disassociate the accents I was hearing with the specific kinds of real life characters I would expect to have them. Nia for example sounds like a hairdresser from wales who gets wasted every friday night and ends up abusing the kebab shop owner at 4am.
- So much fanservice it was embarrassing

I could go on. I enjoyed the world and the music was pretty great, and there were aspects like the story and collecting blades that I was intrigued by. but ultimately I found it quite an annoying game to play.

Summed up my thoughts. I really wanted to like the game but I just couldn't. Exploration was decent and I liked unlocking the skills to get to new areas or treasure, but the cannon fodder enemies taking forever to kill even when they weren't a threat took the enjoyment out of it.

Most of the characters were just annoying, and I have no idea what the developer was thinking with some of those awful costumes. Anime costumes usually look kinda stupid, but this was next level

is it just an endless cycle of history students turning into teachers? Does every history major want to be a teacher?

You do realize historians have other jobs, right? Like research and writing books. If someone loves history, why wouldn't they study history? That's the problem with society. It's not all about making bank. Sometimes people follow their passion

Haven't people already written all of those books? What more is there to write about?

That's code for 'stop giving us bad reviews, and you can come back.'

The first clue that you're completely wrong is that the ban wasn't over reviews at all. Your second clue is that other critics were voluntarily boycotting Disney press screeners and disqualifying Disney from year-end critic awards until the ban was lifted. Someone had leverage here, but it wasn't Disney.

Ha ha, okay. The movie studio that owns half of Hollywood, and a third of television media, had to give in because three newspapers weren't going to give them awards.

If you really believe that, I got some beautiful oceanfront property in Arizona to sell you. Real cheap, too.

The statement followed declarations by the Los Angeles Film Critics Assn. (which includes Times staff writers), New York Film Critics Circle, Boston Society of Film Critics, National Society of Film Critics and Toronto Film Critics Assn. that Disney films would be ineligible for year-end awards consideration for as long as Times film critics were banned from advance screenings.

It's not simply 3 newspapers. It's multiple widespread critic associations, which you would understand if you read the article. If these associations stop previewing, reviewing, and talking about Disney movies that's a massive advertising avenue that disappears, which means Disney now has to pump even more into their own advertising efforts and bloat their budgets even further. We're living in a time where Rotten Tomatoes scores, for better or worse, heavily influence the habits of movie goers. There's a reason high scoring movies use that number and tomato on adverts, because it sells. If people go to rotten tomatoes and see that there's no score there, it's a bad sign and it will keep movie goers from the theater.
