If you liked Harvest Moon, Friends of Mineral Town especially, you should really pick up Stardew Valley. I bought it last year when I got my Switch, and I still play it - it's the only game from my initial three purchases that has held up.

Skyrim is fun. I would check out the Puyo Puyo Tetris demo, that got a lot of play time on my Switch until I bought the full game this year. Agatha Knife is a really neat point and click adventure game if you're into that.

But if nothing else - I would consider looking into Stardew Valley. It's fantastic.

And I always liked that about me, that I know what I'm fighting for - and for this, I'd go to war

thats kind of what i think too. when i get bored of smash bros in like a month my switch is probably going to collect dust until the new metroid comes out

If you like D3, I bought it for a third time too and had a great time. The portability is crazy nice.

Do you have Hollow Knight? That game stunned me with how good it was, one of my favorites in years and like $10. Perfect for Switch too.

Have you played Doom? Great game and pretty masterfully done port.

Gonna have to disagree with this. I'd vote this game most underwhelming game I really wanted to like and paid full price for.

Stardew Valley, Dead Cells, Okami - these might be up your street.

D3 is good but its just the same old shit really.

The one thing to watch out for if you get a first person game is that the joycon sticks aren't the best for controlling them. I'd say get the pro controller, but it's expensive and you just want them portable so it might be best to stay away from Doom.

people seem very polarized about the game, what really turned you off from it?

A number of things:

- Did a very bad job of teaching you how to play it. It just threw an entire book's worth of tutorial dialogue boxes at you right at the start and introduced so many mechanics while you were still just figuring out the absolute basics. It also threw the entire encyclopedic crafting and levelling system at you so you end up collecting a bunch of nonsense items with no idea what to do with any of it. I found it cumbersome and overwhelming.
An example of a perfect tutorial system to me would be Breath of the Wild. Not really any dialogue or descriptions, it just carefully introduces things at the beginning and invites you to use them. You learn through trial and error, not memorising what you read earlier.
- Sidequests were yet again very underwhelming. They did a better job than the first Xenoblade Chronicles but I still felt like I wasn't really invested in any of it.
- The combat started off dull and clunky and graduated into a bit like playing DDR, where you're just trying to time your button presses based on when colours pop up on screen.
- Speaking of combat, there's just so much of it. Why does it take so long to beat basic canon fodder? It's like a 5 minute battle every time even if you're just facing some low level street rats. The only way to actually get anywhere in a reasonable time is to avoid all battles.
- They didn't seem to give much thought to where the high level enemies are on the map. Maybe this was deliberate, but there's only so many times I enjoy being one-shotted by a level 90 giant bird because he happened to see me from about 900metres away and got aggro'd.
- The accents. I understand American fans really enjoyed this aspect but as a Brit I could not disassociate the accents I was hearing with the specific kinds of real life characters I would expect to have them. Nia for example sounds like a hairdresser from wales who gets wasted every friday night and ends up abusing the kebab shop owner at 4am.
- So much fanservice it was embarrassing

I could go on. I enjoyed the world and the music was pretty great, and there were aspects like the story and collecting blades that I was intrigued by. but ultimately I found it quite an annoying game to play.

Summed up my thoughts. I really wanted to like the game but I just couldn't. Exploration was decent and I liked unlocking the skills to get to new areas or treasure, but the cannon fodder enemies taking forever to kill even when they weren't a threat took the enjoyment out of it.

Most of the characters were just annoying, and I have no idea what the developer was thinking with some of those awful costumes. Anime costumes usually look kinda stupid, but this was next level

Dead Cells is one of my favorite games from 2018. im not big into the rogue genre but its a ton of fun.

im really enjoying Octopath Traveler. it's a great dose of old-school JRPG. my only gripe is that it features eight characters with completely disjointed stories that don't connect in any way. at all. otherwise i really, really like it.

fwiw i didn't care for XB2 very much. it's quite the time sink. i gave it like 40 hours of time and i was barely half-way through the game and i just gave up because i completely lost interest. pinky's gripes cover mine as well for the most part.

lol, i never really thought about how the accents would come off for someone living in the UK. you can use the japanese audio, but i can understand not liking that choice too.

the tutorial was pretty poor, i did end up having to look up a video to figure out how the combo system worked. i did find that once i figured it out the combat was probably the best i've ever seen in a JRPG.

i dont think i've ever played a game filled with truly compelling side quests. there were several blade related ones i'd say were well written, and a number of fetch quests that pretty much just finished as i played.

you're kind of supposed to avoid combat, that's literally the whole point of having the mobs on the overworld field. hell the whole leveling system is built around picking and choosing how much combat you want, since it boosts exp if you're under leveled in an area and dumps it into a pool for you to pick and choose when you want to level.

only instance i'd agree with you here is in the early game Gormott area, and that's mostly because i insisted on cutting straight lines across the area.

i felt like the fan service was pretty typical of JRPG to be honest, i guess tora sticks out though since he built a sex bot... i'd say i felt about as much shame playing it as i did playing mass effect 2 with its ludicrous amounts of miranda ass shots and jacks tits hanging out.

A JRPG where you avoid combat not because the foe you encounter is too difficult, but because it's too boring? I don't think that's a good design choice.

I think the significant thing W3 did was turn those fetch quests into something more. While yeah, you were still doing a fetch quests, the writing was so good that it gave you a reason to do the fetch quests, because there was a very good chance that something that seemed basic was going to evolve into a more involved quest chain with interesting characters and choices to make.

The game I've put the most hours into is Pic a Pix Deluxe

If you don't like Picross, this is not for you

If you do like Picross, this is like if Picross had a billion puzzles (instead of 100), with most of them being multicolor

Most of the game's content at this point is in the DLC, since the base game released over a year ago and has had new DLC drop every two or so months

My major gripe with the game is that there's only one music track, and it is terrible. I play with the audio off, lol
