eSports I think is more than merely "playing any sort of game in a competitive context"

It's like, a thing, generally involving games that involve direct competition and that have like major events and streams and sponsors and shit. they're sort of actually run like professional athletics

I watch/participate in a lot of speedrun racing obviously but I don't think it's an esport because esports is like... this whole culture unto itself that I am 100% not a part of

obviously Wario and Yoshi are "Mario characters" in general, but they're specifically in Smash as representatives of their own series.
In the hypothetical nightmare dimension where Wario Land and WarioWare don't exist, Wario wouldn't have been in Brawl. He'd be no more significant than common gutter trash like Waluigi.

Someone writing some shitty edgy thing in their yearbook isn't disqualifying

it does potentially establish a pattern of behavior with a person that, when combined with all the other obvious character concerns that kavanaugh is displaying, make him pretty obviously a dude who shouldn't be confirmed to the supreme court to make judgments on our laws and shit

but this by itself is like, cool, dude was an asshole as a teenager, doesn't say much more

although I admit that Donkey Kong is a very interesting comparison for Wario

since DK also has his own series where he's much more well established but whenever Mario throws a party he's also invited

DK still always feels like a crossover from DKC whenever he shows up though. Wario doesn't feel like that

Wario's standalone games are seemingly always teetering between "on life support" (warioware games still happen but the series is no longer in its prime) and "dead" (where's my fucking wario land 5, nintendo)

meanwhile Wario is consistently invited into every Mario ensemble game

He's more a Mario character than not right now

Right forgive me for going a little red sox here. There are plenty of reasons not to confirm Kavanaugh - his resume is riddled with character issues. These most recent accusations are most damaging because they confirm what was already thought about the guy.

I'm just laying out that its not like in 100% of instances that I would think having committed a sexual assault especially if it was multiple decades ago would be an automatic disqualified.

I think probably the best way to look at it is that it should be a penalty, but not a disqualification

If they covered it up, or they don't appear to have actually changed their behavior, then it's a much harsher penalty, likely leading to disqualification

This is another one of those tricky gray areas, because we want covering up bad behavior to be worse than being honest about it, but that means we have to show tangible forgiveness to people who are honest about bad behavior and that's a really fine line to walk

also like maybe if we seriously made people understand that sexual assault makes you persona non grata in our society people would stop doing it

I'm okay with making an example out of this asshole quite honestly

but then of course there's the other hand where I think it's stupid that kavanaugh is being taken down by a sexual assault allegation specifically and not any one of his other ridiculous mountain of red flags

People commit crimes all the time and I think as long as the person involved is contrite and doesnt try to shift blame but is instead able to apologize, own up to the charges and demonstrate that the person who committed those crimes is not who they currently are that that can be an acceptable biographical flaw.

Its the lying and the belittling of the accuser that demonstrates an utter lack of integrity and character

on the one hand I sort of agree with this because a) I'm a "forgive, even when forgiveness seems unfair" kind of guy and b) quite frankly if we didn't permit people who committed really questionable acts to hold important jobs we just wouldn't have a society, we have shit to do, holding people responsible is important but I mean somebody has to do the job and I wish there were more pure people in the world but there are not so ok

on the OTHER hand it's not like brett kavanaugh has a RIGHT to this job, and for me to even slightly worry that he's being treated unfairly just seems so incongruent with our society where every day we profit off of the slave labor of people in prison, often for way less serious crimes than this, and it's just like, fuck, who actually gives a fuck about whether or not kavanaugh can get this nice promotion when THAT shit's going on? we're not talking about kavanaugh's life being ruined here, it's just a job interview he might fail because of character concerns. we're throwing people in jail and forcing them to work for less. it's kind of ridiculous to pearl clutch over this

Copyright isn't what stops someone from making another Custom Robo game. Copyright is what stops someone from porting an existing Custom Robo game and selling it as their own, even if they call it something other than 'Custom Robo.'

That said I am unclear on the status of Custom Robo's IP and whether or not Nintendo still owns it if they're not keeping the trademark. I have no idea what happens when a video game company decides not to keep a trademark? first time I've ever heard of it.

Well we don't have any data on Richter, Robin, or (surprisingly) Rosalina to go on at all. Hell, Rosalina could be right around Peach's level and we don't know it. But it's hard to say how much Smash factors into that given just how many games she shows up in lately.

I think Simon will get the biggest Smash boost this year. He's like, mid-range fodder as it is, I could see him becoming fodder-line or even a low midcarder on the heels of this announcement.

I already kinda hinted at this before but I really hate the historical rankings because it's so clear that they're unable to see past like, surface-level big accomplishments and that they're deeply influenced by whose presidential legacies have been preserved and canonized by their contemporaries of the day and whose legacies have been forgotten because they did things that were good but unpopular at the time. I'm really baffled by those who are unable to see Garfield/Arthur as anything more than #25-30 tier, like, jfc, these guys read history right? what the hell

If Arthur hadn't signed the Chinese Exclusion Act he'd be damn near perfect imo, he's one of the only presidents in history to burn all his political capital in pursuit of doing something he thought was right. The historical rankings are always wrong about him because the historical rankings are a sham - Arthur had nobody willing to sing the praises of his legacy after he left office because his betrayal of the political machine made him so disliked.

The Bills had a player call it a career instead of play another half with the Bills, and they're still not the worst team in the NFL, because the Cardinals exist, and somehow NEITHER of the teams I just mentioned are the Browns, who actually have some fight in them

I'm less married to division in football than baseball by the way. in the NFL I think you can ditch divisions

Divisions make sense to me in two ways:

1) Cutting down on travel distance
2) Having more games against your divisional rivals

Both of these I do think are positive elements so I'm not sure if I could completely nix them

I think weighing the regular season around division play is both an arbitrary goal and also an incoherent one when you add interleague play into the mix

Basketball is good between like, 75% to 90% of the game being over and it sucks at all other times as far as I'm concerned, unless the game is actually tied at the end

I just don't really get the "different sport" argument in a sport that already has a lot of stuff going on and has evolved quite a bit from its original form. Like, is punting/kicking football? it's really different from every other type of play

To me the college OT is just a natural extension of what makes sense to do with the sport when you want to create an exciting way to not have a tie

I would be okay with just having ties too, but if you're going to do OT, college is simply more entertaining than NFL while also being totally fair imo

Field position IS what football is.

I don't necessarily agree with this premise - even if you take field position out of the game, football still happens. Obviously your strategy changes, but that is basically true no matter what. The push and pull of field position stops mattering at the end of regulation as well when punting no longer becomes an option
