So what do you think are the odds that Lip from Panel de Pon will be a playable character? Sakurai has said often that he is a big fan of the series and has always wanted to include her as a character. There's always one random old school, long forgotten character included in every game so I wonder who it will be.

I really don't even think he cracked only that he was over thinking the prompt. Probably was trying to think of something that related to Obama's presidency which Bin Laden being killed was a big deal, and then realized the obvious clue of Barrack afterwards.

It actually makes a ton of sense that Wolf would often side with Fox in later games given he's a mercenary. I'd still list him as a villain, but maybe in his own category.

Dedede is a weird case because he was once unquestionably a villain but sorta morphed into a reluctant ally. And yet he still frequently serves as an antagonist, but under control of a supernatural being and not of his own freewill. And yet again, a game released just in the past year has him as the main antagonist under his own freewill.

Dedede is such a weird one because I still clearly sort him as a 'villain character' yet he's far more frequently an ally at this point

He's basically an anti-hero, which is funny, because Meta-Knight is also sort of an anti-hero... I guess? who really knows that guy's deal

I barely remember anything post-64, and he's a stone villain in that game.

Also, I guess you could find a WarioWare villain, Captain Syrup or something.

He's basically a Magus in the rest of the games

I think it's just a lucky coincidence rather than a conscious choice by Sakurai. We'll know if more villains show up like, I don't know, Black Shadow and Pokey.

Well, we also got Dark Samus, and Shadow the Hedgehog seems like a likely possibility (no, I don't care that he's stretching it as a 'villain')

I'm not sure what other villain characters would be good adds

Maybe not a conscious choice so much as an inevitable correction of the fact that they'd been ignored up until now, idk.

If he had immediately said "Bin Laden" followed by immediately saying "Barack" I would have basically thought nothing of this, associations like this can be weird and you don't have a lot of time to filter out stupid ones

It's the pauses that both make me think he sucks at this game show and ALSO that he might watch too much fox news

"People with the last name Obama" is like, a joke category you would see in an SNL celebrity Jeopardy sketch

Although, it's actually kind of interesting from a Pyramid perspective where the other person basically has to go "Barack, Michelle" and just hope they draw the connection

The other guy actually knows what he's doing for figuring out what he was going for with Bin Laden/Barack

Starting at the name Obama and going "UHHHH" is way more baffling to me than spitting out something wrong and stupid, especially on a show like Pyramid

I like fanart that depicts Ridley and K. Rool as buds. they have a lot in common. they're both very large, reptilian villains to characters from the original smash 8 who didn't have villain representation yet whose final smashes involve blowing up their heroic counterpart's home base with a giant mouth laser

I feel like saying people who got 2nd "won a match" is fine because otherwise there were just too many matchups that were completely eaten whole by the same top tier chars as usual

Pit/Wrex/Cecil was one of my favorite matches of the tournament because it was so evenly matched without having anyone who was obvious fodder (Tharja/Juliet/Tina)

Even in a lot of the cases where the high seed char was an obvious jobber, the middle seed character was someone who could obviously take advantage

We don't need Banjo, we already have a mammal carrying a bird on its back in this game

While it's not a surprise that Mass Effect had legitimate strength that other western games didn't (it's just a more GameFAQs-y game), I'm still pretty surprised that Wrex topped a lead Nintendo and FF character, even if they're B-listers.

I actually was wondering about people who crossed Richter off their list - I think you need to have played Rondo of Blood or Dracula X which are both pretty obscure, has everyone played these? Dracula X is whatever but Rondo of Blood, the 1993 PC engine game, is an absolutely fantastic Castlevania, probably the most impressive/polished of the old-style Castlevanias I think. It's REALLY worth taking the time to seek out through emulation, it's a game that's weirdly obscure because it was a Japan-only PC engine game and yet it's like, one of the pinnacle Castlevanias imo and Richter's first appearance. Dracula X doesn't do it justice at all. If you like Castlevania and you've never played it it's a must.

they should bring back every fighting team from previous Smash games, since everyone is here and all that

As big as this place is on MGS Im surprised Im not the only one who has never played the series.

I've only played a little bit of the first MGS and that's it, Snake was probably the shakiest cross off on my list, but I did play like 3 hours of it

Also, I counted the Game & Watch Gallery games for G&W

that was actually the only character I struck off the list where I had not played the very first game they appeared in aside from Snake, I haven't played Metal Gear

By the way as far as R.O.B. goes I say you have to have actually played Stack Up or Gyromite to cross him off the list

yeah, probably not many people have, but so what if one of these on the list is really hard to cross off! adds a little mystery to it and it'd be interesting if anyone has

I don't really get the big deal about how many Fire Emblem characters there are

For me in terms of how much I care it's kind of a middling series but I don't mind how many reps there are - FE characters both a) have a lot of character development and fan investment and b) make really natural fits as playable fighters in Smash. And it's a long series of games with an almost completely different cast in nearly every game, which no other Nintendo series operates like. All that, COMBINED with the fact that Fire Emblem is experiencing a bit of a renaissance in popularity, and it just really shouldn't be surprising to anyone that it has a lot of reps. This all combined with the fact that they originally replaced Roy with Ike but then they brought everyone back so that means bringing Roy back, who had a lot of fan popularity from Smash alone anyway. There's a ton of factors going into the disproportionate FE rep here!

I think Chrom was a totally unnecessary addition as someone who's a fan of FE:A myself, since Lucina and Robin have it pretty much covered anyway and Chrom is sort of boring and actually pretty unimportant to the story, but I guess a lot of people like him and want him in so I ultimately can't argue with that. I think it's pretty funny that they fulfilled the Lucina/Robin trailer's promise that maybe Chrom would get in next time, haha.

Paper Mario btw is probably the fighter I'd most be hyped for at this point as far as realistic entries go? He's almost like a completely different character than Mario to me. Mario is pretty low-to-middling in terms of how excited I am to play as them but Paper Mario would be totally different in terms of personal investment.

Also reading that suggestion list from Brawl makes me annoyed that Elite Beat Agents/their japanese counterpart aren't an AT. They wouldn't work as a playable fighter but as an AT hell yeah. I KNOW that Smash would include both the japanese and western counterparts of the character too because they're awesome like that.

I'd argue that those first two are probably above Waluigi. Paper Mario already has his own stage and Mario RPGs totally need representation. Geno would be a cool rep too, being a fan favorite and all, but Paper Mario is a long-running Nintendo series and Super Mario RPG is not.

Paper Mario maybe, but the others aren't as famous or popular.

And knowing Nintendo, a Paper Mario inclusion would have sticker and paint-based powers instead of being based on the good games.

I think this isn't giving the Smash team enough credit. The content they put into the game is not only faithful but also has historically aligned with fan expectations pretty well. I can't think of any examples of a character's design being badly out of line with what people wanted or expected. Simon is yet another positive example of this, where they got his classic Castlevania look down perfectly instead of going with the more modern, red-haired anime dude look. This is a team that, for instance, if they were going to add Dante into the game, you could be damn sure it would be Dante as he appeared in DMC1, not the new Dante nobody likes. To that end, I am pretty sure they would know that the truly beloved Paper Marios are the first two - they would definitely draw some inspiration from Sticker Star et al but I would put money on the most rep going to the first two Paper Marios. (Unless I am very badly wrong about how these games are perceived in Japan - but even then, they know what western audiences want, too.)
