When my uncle was diagnosed with ALS, my aunt had to devote a lot of time, and higher insurance premiums, to take care of him. Could she kill him because he was a burden on her and he wasn't "viable"?

She did have the right to, for instance, divorce him and let him take care of himself or find other arrangements. And if he died because of that, we wouldn't say she murdered him.

What would the analogy be for that action with respect to abortion? How does the woman decide she doesn't want a fetus for the next several months? If there were a procedure that allowed her to remove the baby without directly killing it, but that removal lead to it dying, are you going to say that that would be okay?

Personally I say fucking go for it because a baby is barely even alive and wouldn't remember it anyway. But for the sake of people's feelings my official answer is that if it can survive outside the womb then it would be morally wrong to terminate. That's roughly 26 weeks for 90% of fetuses, or the third trimester.

If you can't afford that, then you have made WAY worse decisions in your life than not wrapping it up.

I don't understand this post at all. $500 is more than a week's pay on minimum wage. It's a week's pay after taxes if you make the median personal income of ~$15. Most people don't have a week's pay saved up. And people who need abortions are more likely to be poor on average

Maybe most people are making bad life decisions, but what does that have to do with how easy it is to get from Arkansas to Illinois?

Stalin's rampage can be attributed to stereotypical mad man paranoia and efforts to seize and consolidate power by squashing any apparent threat to him. This is easy to understand because it fits into a reasonable (loosely speaking, of course) mindset of a leader that believed his grip on his absolute power was tenuous and constantly at risk of undermining. The killings were also more organic (which doesn't make it any better, obviously) in that they fell within standard methods: shootings (both clandestine and execution-style), starvation, and abuse via conditions.

In contrast, the final stages of the Final Solution were cold, meticulous, separated, and industrialized. It ceased to be a struggle for Hitler to remove his political enemies (quite early on, actually), and instead was a process purely geared towards purging huge swathes of people strictly because of their heritage or abnormalities. It's the aspect of industrialization that sets apart the two (and other mass killing efforts by dictators) in terms of their 'evilness' as perceived by folks today.

also, pretty much everyone in the soviet union died with comfortable conformity, whereas in nazi germany the killings were much more targeted

Labor force participation rate has been in the same range for a while now:

https://www.bls.gov/charts/employment-situation/civilian-labor-force-participation-rate.htm

We also have more job openings than people looking for jobs in the first time since this data was tracked in 2001.

https://www.bls.gov/charts/job-openings-and-labor-turnover/unemp-per-job-opening.htm#

Those numbers kind of underscore how difficult it is to get business to raise wages or invest in workforce development, even when competition for workers should be pretty intense, though

How are they not recyclable then? (Not saying you're wrong, but asking for some answers if you've got them and aren't talking out of your ass)

They probably all recyclable, I just know they don't work and are actively harmful for the sort of recycling most places do. This post gets at that:

Questionmarktarius posted...
Balrog0 posted...
my point is that plastic bags make recycling everything else harder because people will mistakenly sort them with the other, actually recyclable goods

Shopping bags are recyclable. They just fuck up the "single stream" recycling everyone insists on having for some reason.

https://www.plasticsmakeitpossible.com/plastics-recycling/how-to-recycle/at-home/can-i-recycle-plastic-bags-in-the-recycling-bin/

Fortunately, it is getting easier to recycle because more and more communities are moving toward single stream recycling residents get one big rolling container for ALL recyclables with instructions on what to collect and what NOT to collect. With a single stream program in place, residents no longer have to separate recyclables into two or more bins and then carry them to the curb (not easy for many folks). By simplifying the collection process, the single stream rolling bin has proven to dramatically increase the amount of recyclables collected and to increase recycling rates. All good.

However, there also are many items generally not accepted in the curbside recycling bin. One example: while a few curbside programs accept plastic bags, wraps and film, most dont. Why?

Most recycling facilities are set up to handle predominately rigid (hard) materials that are easier to separate using machinery: aluminum cans, glass bottles, plastic containers and lids, metal cans, cardboard/paper, etc. They generally dont accept softer items such as your ready-for-retirement college sweatshirt, your beer stained carpeting or your stash of used grocery bags. Its not that used plastic bags, wraps and film cant be recycled into new materials they simply require a different collection system and processing equipment than many curbside recycling programs provide.

The problem is you can recycle plastic bags, but mostly only at the store itself, and no one brings their plastic bags back to the store with them
