There are millions of blind people around the world who are unable to see the gorgeous world before them but this organization is restoring their sight with a simple, minutes-long surgery.

The Himalayan Cataract Project is a nonprofit that has been performing free cataract surgeries across Asia and Africa since the 1990s. The two ophthalmologists who started the project say that they were inspired to pursue the initiative after they saw firsthand how debilitating blindness can be and how easy it is to cure.

Cataracts can be cured by inserted tiny plastic lenses that properly focus the light into a patients eye. Roughly half of the people who suffer from blindness around the world could have their sight restored with a simple cataract surgery however, there are fewer eye doctors in countries like Ethiopia and Nepal.

Additionally, when the two ophthalmologists first visited Nepal three decades ago, the cheapest cataract lens that was available cost over $250; but once the team started manufacturing the lenses locally, they brought the price tag down to under $25 per lens.

Blindness is one of the neglected problems of global health but its also one of the few big problems that we can win, says Geoffrey Tabin, co-founder of the Himalayan Cataract Project.

From the first time I saw the miracle of cataract surgery on a totally blind patient, I realized that there is nothing else I can think of in the realm of medicine that is as cost-effective that we can do [to] really change lives instantaneously.

The project now operates out of Ghana, Bhutan, India, Ethiopia, Myanmar and several others. On an average day, their clinics perform up to 200 cataract surgeries, each of which takes roughly 4 to 20 minutes to complete. After wearing gauze bandages over their eyes for 24 hours, most of their patients are capable of passing a drivers license vision test the very next day.

The joy just comes through, says Tabin. The patches come off and it takes them a couple seconds to realize that theyre seeing and then theres this unbelievable smile.

The Himalayan Cataract Project was nominated as a semi-finalist for The MacArthur Foundations 100&Change competition, which will award a $100 million grant to the winner that can provide a bold solution to a critical social problem in the world.

This team of firefighters is dedicated to serving their community in more ways than one; in addition to caring about the safety of their neighbors, theyre also concerned about peoples bellies, too.

The firefighters from Engine 642 in West Henrietta, New York answered an emergency call about a driver who had gotten into a car collision earlier this week. When they arrived on the scene, they discovered that the driver was a pizza delivery driver.

The crew made sure that the driver was taken care of and safely loaded onto the ambulance before they took it upon themselves to finish the job.

With mischievous smiles on their faces, the team arrived at the customers house with pie in hand and explained the situation.

If its not delivery its Di Fire dept?! joked the Henrietta station Facebook page. Just down the road from the call they delivered the pizza and thanked the customer for deciding to order out and not risk burning food and setting off the fire alarm!

While the customer was initially confused by the unusual delivery, he was grateful for the pizza.

This is not the only time that the Henrietta Fire Department lent a helping hand to their community, either just days after pictures of the pizza incident were published to Facebook, the department page posted photos of their firefighters changing a tire for a senior couple.

Our kind gestures continue with crews stopping and changing a flat tire for an elderly couple stopped on the side of I-390 this evening, wrote the station.

A Pennsylvania police officer is under investigation after he was filmed using a stun gun on a man who was sitting on a curb. Lancaster police said officers responded to a disturbance around 10 a.m. Thursday after a 911 caller claimed there was a man confronting people with a bat.

Officer Shannon Mazzante arrived at the scene and repeatedly told the man later identified as Sean Williams, 27 to sit down on the sidewalk. However Williams did not comply, police said. When Officer Philip Bernot arrived to assist Mazzante, he warned Williams that if he continued to refuse to follow directions, a Taser would be used on him.

At this point Williams sat on the curb facing the street. A neighbor began filming the scene and the video, posted to Facebook, captured Bernot telling Williams to sit on the sidewalk and stick his legs out.

Legs straight out or youre getting tased, Bernot is heard telling Williams. Seconds later Bernot uses his stun gun on Williams, who at the time was sitting, facing away from the officer.

Youre really going to tase him?! He was sitting down though, bro! the person filming can be heard off camera. Police said they found no bat at the scene.

Police said Williams did not follow their instructions after the reported disturbance.

Non-compliance is often a precursor to someone that is preparing to flee or fight with Officers," police said in a statement. Mayor Danese Sorace said she was upset by the video and an investigation into the officers use of force is ongoing.

Like you, when I saw the video I was upset by it and it is of great concern to me. We take the use of force very seriously, she said in a video released on Facebook, adding that the incident has affirmed my resolve to implement o body camera program here in the City of Lancaster.

Police said Williams, who was evaluated by medical personnel after the incident, had an outstanding criminal warrant for his arrest for charges of possession of a controlled substance and public drunkenness.

Williams was arraigned Thursday and released on $5,000 bail. Community activists are calling for a rally Friday afternoon at the steps of the Lancaster Country Courthouse calling on the end of police brutality.

Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson heard about this after Robs partner posted something on social media. Ever since, the attorney general has relentlessly and on his own initiative come after me in ways hes never come after anyone else. He certainly hasnt done the same to a Seattle coffee shop owner who profanely berated and openly discriminated against Christian customers.

The attorney general doesnt just want to punish me in my role as a business owner. Hes sued me in my personal capacity, meaning that my husband and I are now at risk of losing everything we own.

Ive written the attorney general a letter urging him to drop the personal claims that risk stripping away my home, business, and other assets. He wont. For him, this case has been about making an example of me crushing me all because he disapproves of what I believe about marriage.

I often wonder what would happen if the tables were turned. I find it hard to believe that if a lesbian floral artist served a Christian customer for years but declined to create special arrangements for his religious rally opposing same-sex marriage, the attorney general would accuse her of discriminating against Christians. So why does he insist that I am discriminating against gays and lesbians?

Is it so hard to see the difference between refusing to serve people because of who they are and declining to help celebrate an event that has deep spiritual significance?

While my states attorney general has lost sight of that difference, Im still hopeful that the courts will grasp it. Otherwise, it wont just be Christians like me who have their lives thrown into disarray. All creative professionals who want to live their lives in a way that honors their beliefs about topics like religion and politics will be at risk. If their views catch the ire of the government, they too will face the whirlwind Ive endured.

But no one else should have to experience that. We should all be free to live out our beliefs about important moral issues like same-sex marriage.

Right now, Rob is free to do that, as is any floral artist who agrees with his views of marriage.

All Im asking for is the same tolerance and respect the kind the high court just promised people like me in its Masterpiece Cakeshop ruling.

I gotta disagree with the lady on the right who I feel is arguing a fallacy saying "You should not be punished from the marketplace or society for your reasonable belief that marriage is between a man and a woman!"

Because that's a bit of a strawman. No one is being punished for that belief, they're being punished for not serving gay people while running a businsess. That's debatably discriminatory.

No one is being punished for believing that Asian people have better teeth than Black people but a store would be punished for refusing to serve toothpaste to anyone whose skin falls below Chestnut Brown on a shade scale.

Next time you go to any store or any resturant or anywhere in general the guy or gal serving you may believe you a piece of shit who they hate and deserves to die slowly, but if they still serve you with a smile on their face no one cares because they didn't "do" anything wrong.

As diverse as our country is, most Americans still share a few basic things in common.

We each have our beliefs, and we want to live our lives in ways that reflect them. We care about finding work that not only provides a good living, but also gives us a sense of joy. We want to love what we do.

Five years ago, I felt like I had all of that. But because I tried to do my work as an artist in ways that honored my religious beliefs, my home state of Washington turned my life upside down. Since then, my state has been prosecuting me because I declined, for religious reasons, one request to celebrate one event for one gay customer a friend of mine named Rob, whom Id been delighted to serve for nearly a decade

The Washington Supreme Court ruled against me last year with a decision that threatens to bankrupt my husband and me. But this week, the U.S. Supreme Court breathed new life into my case, sending it back to the Washington courts for further consideration.

This comes on the heels of the U.S. Supreme Courts ruling in Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission. The high court in that case overturned the punishment of cake artist Jack Phillips for declining to create a custom wedding cake celebrating a same-sex marriage. I and my attorneys with Alliance Defending Freedom, who represent both me and Jack, are now more hopeful than ever that my freedom will be protected, too.

My state has been prosecuting me because I declined, for religious reasons, one request to celebrate one event for one gay customer -- a friend of mine named Rob, whom Id been delighted to serve for nearly decade.

Im a floral artist who owns a small family business named Arlenes Flowers, which my mom started decades ago in Richland, Washington.

I love the artistry of floral design, especially designing custom arrangements for weddings. Its a fun challenge for me to create unique designs that tell a couples story and capture their love for each other. Once the designs are done, I go to the event, decorate the venue, pin on boutonnieres, and do all I can to make sure the event is beautiful.

Im also a Christian, and that affects every part of my life, including my work. Because I believe that all people are made in the very image of God, I serve everyone who enters my shop and treat them with dignity and respect.

But this doesnt mean that I can agree to every request. If people ask for custom arrangements to celebrate events or express messages that run up against my religious beliefs, I have to say no. (This is particularly true for events like weddings that I personally attend.) Even then, Ill gladly create something else for them, or sell them any of my ready-to-purchase items.

My relationship with Rob shows this. I served him for nearly a decade. I knew that he is a gay, and he knew that Im a Christian. None of that mattered. We enjoyed working with each other, and we quickly became friends. I was glad to create arrangements celebrating his partners birthday, their anniversary, Valentines Day, and other important life events. But when he asked me to design the flowers for his wedding, it was a different matter.

My faith teaches me that marriage is sacred, and that it exists only in the uniting of a man and a woman. I cannot create custom floral art, or be part of an event, celebrating a view that contradicts what I believe God designed marriage to be.

So when Rob asked me about his wedding, I walked him to a private part of my shop, took his hand in mine, told him why I couldnt do what he asked, and referred him to three other florists who I knew would do a good job. Rob said that he understood, and we hugged before he left.
