But the SoD update was marred with a highly controversial UI update, more bugs than ever, and according to some, awful storytelling. I wouldn't know because I never made it out of the first dungeon(I've made three attempts to play with the new UI and I just can't do it).

for the UI thing, do you mean how the whole game now has that stupid black and red UI? even though black and red are my favorite colors, it doesn't fit at all with the regular game. (otherwise, what is it you don't like about the UI?)

I would say yes to every single one of those things.

k, great, although it'd be a lot better to hear that from someone who isn't a contrarian

Even at the most basic level, the overall "orange-y/brown" aesthetic that's at the core of NV design looks better to me than the sickly green aesthetic of Fallout 3 (even the amber Pip-Boy filter looks better than the green one). On a more granular level, I'd argue that NV takes most of what 3 does in general with design and tone and does it far better.

k, but it's not supposed to be "I like particular thing better", or "I'd argue that X is better", it's supposed to be that the whole qualitative experience is thoroughly more enjoyable to you, regardless of the individual pieces.

the rest of your post just mentions particulars.

yeah k, it's not that much (why would it be $5k? what exactly are you paying for with a price like that?)

http://www.cbc.ca/marketplace/blog/map-ambulance-fees
How much an ambulance costs [in Canada]:
British Columbia $50 if treated on scene; $80 if transported to hospital
Alberta $250 if treated on scene; $385 if transported to hospital
Saskatchewan Depending on the health region, $245 or $325 + $2.30/km
Manitoba Depending on where you are in the province, the cost ranges from $270 + $3/km to $530
Ontario $45 if medically necessary, $240 if not medically necessary
Quebec $125 + $1.75/km
New Brunswick In New Brunswick those without private insurance don't pay ambulance fees.
UPDATE: In April, 2015, the province reinstated ambulance fees. Now, for those without insurance, the cost for an ambulance is $130
Nova Scotia $142.30
Newfoundland and Labrador $115
Prince Edward Island $150
Yukon No out-of-pocket charge to patients
Northwest Territories Varies by location
Nunavut Varies by location

I just remember as a kid after breaking my leg skiiing, my parents complaining about the ambulance bill. I do remember it was around $300, which sounded like a lot at the time.

we'd lose the monolithic nature of the current internet. you'd end up with multiple internet hubs. there'd be earthnet, marsnet, lunanet, etc., and depending on the location you'd have extreme lag between hubs (or worse without proper satellites in place you'd have blackouts to other hubs at certain times of day).

you could maybe have something like wikipedia replicated to marsnet. mars could then have a readonly version of wiki that's like 30 minutes behind the earth version or something. it would probably be tricky or impossible to have the local cached version writable, so to write to earthwiki from mars you'd need to suffer through the lagtime. it's possible new protocols would emerge to support browsing with such extreme delays.

I mean I also played FO3 first, but wasn't disappointed at all playing NV second. I get the feeling if you played NV first you'd think the exact opposite. That's the sort of things your posts point to. We'll never know if that would be true or not though.

it's possible but I doubt it. I didn't like F3 at first in fact, it took like my third attempt to play to actually get hooked.

TallTamryu posted...
Those same sounds are IN NV as well, that's the point. And no, they're definitely not worse. Feel free to watch youtube clips of the guns in both games. Some quite nice sounding stuff in both games, just NV has more of it. Some "meh" and then some amazing ones.

it's not about this one specific thing anyway, that was the point. I'm not saying "F3 had better gun sounds, that's why it's a better game". it's the whole package. the subway tunnels, the lighting/pixel shading, the particle system, the music, the enemies, the environments. it all adds up to a very unique experience that can only be had in one place, and not even NV the game most similar to it there will ever be can capture that experience. (it captures its own experience, of course, but one I subjectively enjoy significantly less.)

so, this is like the third "rebuttal" to what I've said that has completely missed the point of what I'm saying.

a proper counter-argument to what I'm saying is to say whether or not you found the "total aesthetic" as I've described it better in NV than in F3. has anyone? maybe you like the game more, but does anyone appreciate the overall atmosphere and aesthetic of NV more than F3? is exploring the mojave a thoroughly more enjoyable and satisfying experience than exploring the DC wasteland?

If anything there's MORE of this stuff

more of what? more sounds? the point is not that it has "gun sounds" it's that the gun sounds are satisfying. listen to the hunting rifle in F3 compared to the guns sounds in NV. the NV guns look duller, sound duller, and IIRC they tend to have more ammo and do less damage, too, requiring more shots. the end result is (to me) a less satisfying experience, despite the pieces being ostensibly the same.

All that he said was that he enjoyed 3 because it was fun, and NV wasn't fun, and the atmosphere of the games matter.
As if game devs have a "fun" meter, or an "atmosphere" meter, that they can adjust up and down.

they sort of do, it's just difficult. exciting music is "funner" than boring music. satisfying bangs when you shoot a gun is "funner" than dull sounds. a finely adjusted lighting scheme that captures the right feeling for the moment is "funner" than lighting that's all over the place. etc.etc. and yes it's all subjective, that's the point. but even though it's partly subjective, there's still also a genuine difference between exciting and crappy sounds.

Specific details like "I didn't like how they used the skill system", or "I am a fan of the wackier side of Fallout, and NV toned that down", or "I felt like the color scheme was bland", or "the story was shit", and so on, those are details that matter.
Bland generic terms like "the overall aesthetics" and "just being fun" is awful for any sort of discussion because it doesn't mean anything.

I'm trying to broaden the idea to be more applicable than to just this one game. I can give you a big list of small things that all add a little bit to the "total aesthetic" of fallout 3, but the point is how none of them alone is enough, and it's something that's even hard to articulate when you know about it. (for example, for myself, I'm surprised by the fact that I just can't get tired of shooting ghouls in the face with a shotgun, and I'm not exactly sure why.)

so I guess here's a list of some of the small details that add up to a lot more than I'd expect them to, but if you don't "get it" when you play the game, you're definitely not going to get it reading a list. remember the point is how these all mix together, not just how good they are individually. also, this is not an argument for why *you* should like the game, this is an argument for why *I* like the game despite it's flaws.
- the soundtrack by Inon Zur, particularly the peaceful music and the combat music
- the real looking and feeling broken concrete and crumbling city, in particular the way the broken concrete looks with rebars sticking out of it, etc.
- the Washington DC monuments
- the voice acting of super mutants
- the sounds made by mirelurks
- the way the radios sound
- the way the debris objects look and sound (the way nuka cola quantum looks)
- the way gunshots sound and guns are animated
- the way explosions sound
- the way "dismembering" sounds
- the way ghouls sound (which I personally find hilarious)
- the rag-dolling
- probably one the biggest is the explosion system; the way cars explode is *amazing*, but if you go into the editor there's actually a pretty robust explosion system. I used it for a "cherry bomb locks" mod I made. I just basically said "make an explosion of about this size with about this much smoke and this much noise, doing this much damage (none), centered on this object." I barely had to test it, it was almost perfect on the first try.
- the projectile system as well, the way you can see bullets whiz by but also *hear* them whiz by (or feel them hit you)
- the lighting system

so much of this is all so perfectly fine-tuned and so well made artistically. it's not easy to do that. I mean, it's really really hard to do that. it's so much more than saying "yeah the game has good sound".

the guys who made NV didn't get any of this at all. I remember fighting Caesar troops, and it was such a chore to down them. there was none of the satisfying aesthetics from the F3 combat, it felt like punching a brick wall.

All of these words, and not a single point. I had plenty of fun playing NV, so I guess everything you were talking about by "adding or removing fun" was just sorta moot?

I think I explained it pretty well. (I don't see how you can say I didn't make a point, I very clearly did.)

The subjective sensual experience of playing a game is not something we often focus on. We might say a game has good music or cool sound effects, but the total aesthetic that a game captures is, I don't think, something we identify very often, other than to say it had "good atmosphere" or something.

so as I said, for me, the total aesthetic of Fallout 3 was good enough that I can enjoy the game despite its endless flaws, and the opposite is true of NV (I don't enjoy its aesthetic despite the endless technical ways in which it's superior to F3).

and yes, this is necessarily subjective, so another person may enjoy something I don't and vice-versa. that's kind of the point. the subjective experience of playing the game can be just as or perhaps more important than the objective mechanical parts of the game. how the game feels when you play it can be more important than what the game looks like on paper.

(this is why, for example, music is often such a surprisingly important part of a game. objectively it shouldn't be important at all but instead it's very often one of most memorable parts of a game.)

I think Fallout 3 gets a lot of things right that we don't usually think about that makes it fun despite its flaws, and NV gets a lot of things technically right, but misses a lot of what made Fallout 3 fun.

I remember reading about the developer of World of Goo saying how one of his rules was to make sure that everything was "juicy". Every interaction you had with the game should make squishy/poppy sounds and always give some kind of sensual response back to the player.

I think this sort of ineffable atmospheric/sensual experience is an important part of what makes a lot of games funner than they could be. In other words, it's possible that gameplay (game mechanics specifically) isn't quite as important as we think it is.

If you reduce most games down to just their gameplay, turning them basically into spreadsheets or whatever it would look like (varies by genre), they lose a ton, maybe all, of their fun. A lot of the fun of a game comes from the sensual experience, not just the game mechanics.

So, for me, Fallout 3 had a fantastic sensual experience which more than made up for its flaws in just about every single other area. The experience of exploring the wasteland in Fallout 3 is so unique and authentic and FUN, and it was sure as heck not replicated in NV, even if NV might be technically better in a lot of ways.

EclairReturns posted...
Mostly the fear of ramming into other cars or something else in a high-speed environment. I just get nervous when I'm pressured to drive over thirty-five miles-per-hours because I know that every other car on the highway is driving about fifteen miles-per-hour more than that. It just got me freaked out that a car might possibly ram into me because I'm driving too slow, and it also freaks me out because I might ram into something because my field of vision is limited as a result of the speed at which I'm travelling.

yes, what's dangerous is speed differential more than just speed. if you're going significantly faster or slower than everyone else, that is what is dangerous. that IS something to be wary of, the problem is the anxiety hijacking your ability. only practice and repetition will get rid of that.

To a much lesser extent, I'm also afraid of driving too much to the left or too much to the right in my lane,

there's a lot more space around your car than it feels like. (though obviously don't overestimate it either). something I think helps is to notice where your front left wheel is relative to your left foot. depending on the shape of your car, your left wheel is basically right there beside your foot, rather than way out where it "feels" like it is.

I also always have this habit of double-checking my mirrors and looking over my shoulder when crossing over to some other lane, because I'm afraid of ramming into some other car.

why is this a bad thing? you are supposed to check mirrors and shoulder check before changing lanes.

I'm also freaked out because while I'm doing this, because my attention is shifted away from the front of the car, and that will also have a good chance of causing a collision.

you're right to be aware of this. it can be tricky if traffic ahead of you is slowing down, and you're changing into an exit lane or something. do your best to mentally keep track of both things and slow down as necessary.

I also lack general common sense on a road. Like, today, I checked my left side for incoming traffic at a stop sign because I thought that that was a thing to do, despite the fact that there's no road leading into the intersection from the left. In short, I really have absolutely no confidence in my driving skills whatsoever, and I honestly believe I'm a danger to everybody on the road, including myself. I'm a nervous wreck, I scare very easily, and don't have much confidence in adapting to unfamiliar situations. I don't even think I know how to control the car as well as I should be able to; like, I didn't even know up until today how to "straighten my tires". I don't think I have any business driving, whatsoever.

it sounds like you need to take a driving course. there's things I still do today almost 20 years later that I was taught only once way back then. they will also let you drive a car under safer conditions (the instructor will have his own brake pedal), and tell you what you're doing right and what you're doing wrong.

Joker is more interesting without an origin. In fact, maybe there's an exception somewhere, but has it ever been a good idea to introduce an origin/explanation for something that didn't already have one?

Interestingly, origin stories are actually the *most* interesting. Less interesting, but still potentially interesting are post-origin stories (part 2). But among the least interesting seem to be post-hoc origin stories. For whatever reason, the feeling of "filling in the story gaps" is actually not all that satisfying and always ends up feeling strongly artificial. Doesn't seem to have that problem when told chronologically, though, so maybe it's related to our natural expectation of things becoming more complex and understanded over time, and not in reverse.

I'll never know for sure. Some games like Diablo and its clones maybe don't count since they're designed to be played through repeatedly. Some games maybe don't count since you can load your save at the end, beat it, and watch the ending, over and over.

I think in terms of starting a brand new game and playing all the way to the very end, these are probably the most, though some of the much much shorter games below might technically surpass them in total number of playthroughs.

Descent 1 (includes source ports)
Baldur's Gate 1 (includes BG:EE)
Dark Souls games

Games from my childhood:
Fantasy Zone (countless)
Mega Man 2 (countless)
Starfox (countless, but not in a long long time)
Batman (NES) (a lot, but not in a VERY long time)
FF3 (6j) (a lot, but some are loading specifically to fight last boss)
SMW (same) (once played through and *96ed entire game in one sitting)

(really, probably some huge ass list of SNES games that I'm forgetting. Zelda 3, Super Metroid, Secret of Mana, Contra 3, DKC games, etc.etc.)

Other games I've played through more times than I can count (which means at least 5 times, but some may be 10+):
Doom 1
TES games
Factorio
Borderlands 2
Civilization 2
MOO2
Deus Ex
System Shock 2
SimCity 2 and 3

the Wii Punch Out was one of the only Wii games to ever truly impress me

and I think the only other one might have been Wii Sports

may or may not count, but still interesting and worth noting

this site is supposedly legit, but I don't feel especially confident of that

the first book is amazing, I've read it at least 3 times. what I love about it is the real sense of moving to another (barely) habitable planet, and really living there learning to cope with its fundamentally different ecology (in this case, absurdly different, moving from an ocean planet to a desert planet.) even a whole profession "planetologist" for someone who specializes in studying the ecology of a particular planet.

I guess saying it, that's actually not that unique sounding, maybe even cliche, (fish out of water?), but the way its done seems pretty unique to me. it feels very believable.

the mystical stuff is all kind of weird and not necessarily that amazing, but the sci-fi parts sure are.

there's stuff I like about the second book, which sort of ties up a lot of the loose ends of the first book, though it sure has a different feel to it.

the third book I found boring and it didn't really do anything interesting at all. kept waiting for it to intrigue me, but it was just boring. when it finally should have gotten interesting, it just got weird instead.

exactly what I was thinking... at most there will be, what, if you're lucky some new pointless gimmick tech, and a rehash or two of a franchise that will not even justify the existence of the platform they're made for. whoop-de-friggin-do.
