Like actual surprise, not kayfabe surprise. If you telegraph them beating Lesnar people will expect it so there's no impact. That was part (but obviously not all) of the Reigns problem, the whole idea that he was so obviously annointed to beat Lesnar. Or so we thought.

Nobody really gave Joe much of a chance, for instance, or even Strowman. I think had they won, out of nowhere, flying in the face of everything that people thought was "planned", that would have had an impact and given them a temporary boost at least.

Yeah, I kind of hate that they deleted it. It adds a whole lot to the movie and builds more sympathy for Cap's character, rather than Fury just showing up at the gym. His intro ended up being pretty poor compared to, well, any of the others apart from Hawkeye.

Also all those shots of the waitress during the final battle, and the aftermath, make sense if that scene is in. It's a pity.

No? I was referring to consensus among Pokemon fans. I do like Decidueye more than Lycanroc personally but the point I was making was that any starter Pokemon gets a boost.

I don't claim to be the ultimate arbiter of fan consensus but I think we can safely assume that Pokemon fans would generally be happier with Articuno and Charizard in the top 5 here over literally anything we have left, and yes, that includes Lycanroc.

For the record my love for the Zard is absolutely in part to do with it being a starter, and the same goes for Infernape, Incineroar and others that I like. I never said it was bad, just that starters get a boost - so when I talk down to Lycanroc getting this far because it's new and consensus tends not to favour the new, there's a reason I don't also include Decidueye in that even though they came out in the same gen.

There's absolutely no way to prove this but I would strongly assert that you're wrong. Starter Pokemon get further because they're starters in every single case, and that includes Charizard, and that's absolutely fine. It's totally rational, I'm not criticising anyone for it, but starters are 100% operating under different rules.

Swampert might have been "beloved" whether or not it was a starter but that I don't think it would be top 20. But even then, where are you putting it in the game? Can you catch Mudkip on Hoenn route 1, or after, like, the 7th badge? All of that stuff effects voting too. I wouldn't like THEMANITAN so much if it wasn't available so early in BW, and if BW hadn't come at the peak of my personal hype for Pokemon, etc.

But starters' placement is much more fixed, eternal, objective, and therefore they all - all - operate under different rules. At a push you can make an argument for the exception of the forgettable middle evos like Ivysaur, Quilava, Braixen

Starters obviously get pushed, but usually there's a couple non-starters per gen who also get a big push. Rockruff/Lycanroc got a ton of pre-release hype and Lycanroc is legit one of the most popular in the gen.
