The fact ther didn't have many guns in circulation to begin with on the of the fact they're on a small fucking island plays a big part....

It's always "durr hurr but Japan has strict gun laws" yeah it's also a place where crime was almost non existent to begin with and they send their three year olds alone to the store.

Canada borders the madhouse known as the US and yet does not have anywhere close to the same gun problem.

Supposedly millennials (I am one) value experiences more than accumulating stuff. I can totally understand, but I sure hope that doesn't mean they're forsaking saving for retirement. As for me, I don't travel but may want to someday. I don't place that much importance in it, though. It seems like one of those things where people take the things they enjoy doing and think everyone else must also enjoy doing it or they're a lesser person.

No it isn't. The term was made up by the comic and it had nothing to do with how the term is used now.

voldothegr8 posted...
Not foolish at all, most people could easily play games 40+ hours a week on a stream. The people who get rich from it like Shroud or Ninja are really really good and/or really entertaining, and that's the factor most people don't have.

voldothegr8 posted...
If the streamer isn't really good at what they're playing and/or not entertaining, they're not going to get the revenue it takes to do it full time to begin with. You don't seem to understand this simple fact.

As far as playing games full time being taxing, we'll agree to disagree I guess. For me it wouldn't be taxing to play games full time and get paid, but I'm not good enough or entertaining enough to draw crowds. Or I would in a heartbeat.

Since there is no option in supermarkets to pay for free samples, I don't really think that question is as comparable. Try creating a scenario that exists. Honestly your porn example wasn't bad.

BUT am I going to say "I shouldn't have to pay for porn" or "anyone who pays for porn is stupid"? Hell no, because at least I'm fucking honest about my guilt for getting a service for free, and at least I'm putting the blame for not paying for that service entirely on myself and not trying to denigrate others to rationalize my own actions.

If by "bake your noodle" you mean "think it's stupid how some guy playing video games gets paid more than most doctors" then yes, I agree. If it's so easy to win the lottery, why don't you do it? As I've already explained, popularity contests are largely luck-based.

Lol. By your logic, Q&A testing isn't a real job because "they're getting paid to play video games". Nevermind the fact that I already spelled out for you up above how providing entertainment and having to stay committed to it to make income is in fact, work.

Except Q&A is to verify that the product works as intended. Also note that Q&A is paid like shit. The nebulous "providing entertainment" can be done by anything. There is plenty of free entertainment. That doesn't explain idiots blowing money on people playing video games. The obvious reason is that they're idiots.

Because youre not obliged to donate to twitch streamers because what they do barely qualifies as work. They are generating entertainment for you 85% off the back of a quality game that people actually worked hard to create, all they are doing is playing it and making occasional jokes. Something literally anyone can do.

So why aren't you doing it?

Same reason why one wouldn't go buying lottery tickets. Anyone can scratch a ticket, but it doesn't guarantee a payout. Similarly, twitch and the like are popularity contests. Popularity contests are largely a matter of luck. Should we really be rewarding luck so handsomely?

A movie takes millions of dollars, a team of people (each person with skill in their craft), and years of work to make. Twitch is just one or two people farting around with video games. It's fucking stupid. Given the mechanism of supply and demand and that games themselves (which take way more effort, knowledge, and skill to make than to play them) often literally go for a dime a dozen (or even free) these streamers really shouldn't be making that much. Entertainment is a flooded market, tons of it is free these days. The argument that providing "entertainment" is to provide something of value is bullshit, because it's clearly in overabundance. That's what happens with popularity contests, it's simply irrational.

Personally, I'll stick with using my money wisely and maximizing my enjoyment per dollar. You may say $5 or $10 or even $20 here or there isn't much, but there are far better uses for that money. I'm not even poor, in fact I'm quite the opposite. It's called being smart with your money, which I suppose is a difficult concept to grasp for someone who participates in the gaming equivalent of cuckoldry.

Not really that unbelievable. I've seen stuff on social media like "I saw a little boy pumping gas for his mom, then I saw his mother say something to him, then he went over to another pump and helped some other lady pump her gas. She's rasing a little gentleman!!".

Shit like that gets passed around pretty frequently. The idea in the topic title is no necessarily uncommon.

Blame market forces, not individual companies. You can't curb this shit even with the best of intentions unless you somehow instill a worldwide culture shift against innovation and efficiency.

I'd like innovation to focus on reducing CO2 emissions from livestock. I'd like innovation to cure cancer. I'd like innovation to focus on coming up with a way to end droughts. Or if we're going to for vain stuff, I'd like them to come up with ice cream that doesn't melt or have the damn burger buns not get soggy.

If their innovation is focused on ways to fire people in order to save a few bucks, fuck them.

Those people who got fired can then use their new free time to figure out the cure for cancer.
