"program not working? maybe i should restart the computer before calling IT. headset not working? maybe i should check it has charge". stuff like that. This highlights the crux of the problem to me. You're a tech because that's your profession. You're the person with the skillset and experience, the person providing the expertise in the situation. So why have the expectation that other people who are not techs should be on your level?

That's like a chef being annoyed at his customers because they don't know how to make a duck confit at home by themselves so they came to the restaurant to eat it. It's weird.

I understand if you give advice and it's ignored, but I don't understand the immediate hostility some techs have to anyone who's not technically minded. Your end user employs you exactly for that reason.

Anyway I wasn't even talking about techs and customer interactions here, I was talking about techs talking to other techs.

- Delusions of grandeur, many people believe we're still the Great British Empire and not just a tiny nation of shopkeepers and academics

- Brexit, because of the two above reasons mainly
- No actual industry

Watching an email conversation right now between two techs from different companies. The chief goal of this conversation doesn't seem to be focused on actually being solution orientated but really just seeing who can swing their dick around the most impressively.

Friend of mine went for six months on a work-related trip, did his best to make the most of his time there (unlike his workmates who refused to sample the culture and might as well have not gone) and came back with a heap of great stories to tell us. Most were hilarious, some were bad at the time but he could still laugh about them afterwards.

Purely from how he talks about his time there, i'm guessing you'll have a blast.

He also wouldn't recommend it to me on the basis of the skin colour prejudice he saw while there, but that's another issue.

I really don't understand people who go to somewhere else and just live life as if they're at home. Like they go eat at Wagamamas and McDonalds and spend their time in a sports bar that could be anywhere in the world and still be exactly the same.

that's my technique. I've been angry with a supplier once where he was lying to my face so I called him a liar and spent like 10 minutes proving he was a liar to everyone on the conference call. A while ago I helped them move some old couches into the garage to be replaced with new ones. They couches were some hideous basketweave monstrosities from the 80s with shredded cushions and broken supports, not remotely comfortable and barely functional.

I just found them blocking up the entirety of their garage. They haven't thrown them out. They're holding onto them, "just in case", and for "sentimental reasons".

How much fucking sentimental value is in a broken couch, jesus christ.

This isn't just about the couch. The entire house is falling apart and dad refuses to let me help them with repairs because he's oddly attached to broken things. Like the wallpaper is literally falling off the walls and he doesn't want to rip it down and paint over it, because it reminds him of the 70s.

And before you try to school me realise that the reason I'm so angry about this is because I care about their wellbeing.

I'm more fearful of the men who never change mood and always seem polite but distant, no matter how angry or annoyed they are. Those are the ones who make you think everything is fine right up until they call the lawyers.
