And regardless, that isn't even true for most major recent cases. The majority of the major mass shooters of the past few years did not steal their guns from relatives. They legally purchased the guns themselves, and in many cases had documented mental health problems or even criminal histories, but still managed to purchase guns legally.

Of the 10 most deadly shootings in America over the past 6 years, 9 were done with guns that were legally purchased by the perpetrator, the only one that was stolen from a relative was for Sandy Hook. None were illegally purchased.

Define "legally bought." At some point, most guns were legally purchased. However, in the case of student shootings, usually the gun was legally purchased by a relative then stolen by the shooter.

I'm glad to see these guns the relatives are buying are really doing a good job for self defense then. Having those legal guns in civilian hands is definitely making the world a better place. Lets just give teachers guns to give them another place to steal guns from.

The United States has the highest homicide rate of any of the wealthy 1st world countries by a significant amount, and over 70% of them are caused by guns.

Meanwhile countries like the UK, Australia, New Zealand etc. have 1/5th the homicide rate of the U.S. and each of those countries have less than 20% of their homicides caused by guns.

When someone kills 17 people at a school with a knife then I'll take that argument somewhat seriously. Until then its the most ridiculous cop out argument people against gun restrictions take.

This isn't a gun issue. It's a mental health and a culture where violence against others is seen as a valid solution to a problem issue.

If that was the only factor this would be happening around the world every week. Instead America is the only place where it happens frequently, and maybe somewhere in Europe once a year. It's very clearly a very big gun issue, along with a mental issue and a culture of sensationalized violence in the media of course, but a gun issue nonetheless.

Also my ranking of the best picture nominees
1. Phantom Thread - masterpiece
2. Call Me By Your Name - fantastic
3. Lady Bird - great
4. Dunkirk - very good
5. Get Out - pretty good
6. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri - good
7. Darkest Hour - good
8. The Shape of Water - fine
9. The Post - eh, decent I suppose

So none i dislike which is good. Usually there is always a few I think aren't good or in some cases aggregiously bad (such as The Revenant, Hidden Figures and American Sniper in recent years)

Del Toro is definitely winning director. Its hardly even a question. Doesnt deserve it as much as PTA of course but he will win. Also Shape of Water is definitely the frontrunner at this point to win best picture after it won the PGA and McDonagh getting snubbed for director, though Three Billboards, Lady Bird, and Get Out all have a shot too.

Also not much surprising imo. Biggest surprises are Phantom Thread overperforming and getting picture and director, which I am thrilled about as it is the best film of the year, as well as Jane missing in documentary since that was considered the clear frontrunner to win.

All together I successfully predicted 81% of the oscar nominees. Pretty good. Got 5/5 on about a third of the categories

Deadpool got nominated at golden globes, and also got nominated at producers guild, editing guild, and writers guild awards last year if I remember correctly. I'm sure it was relatively close to getting nominated for adapted screenplay at the oscars. [actually looking back probably not, a lot of stuff didn't qualify for the writers guild which was probably more why it got nominated there]

My top 10 last year:

1. Elle (nominated for best actress)
2. Toni Erdmann (nominated for foreign film)
3. Manchester by the Sea (best picture nominee along with other stuff)
4. Aquarius
5. Paterson
6. Cemetery of Splendor
7. Green Room
8. Sing Street
9. Cameraperson
10. Certain Women

so one best picture nominee in my top 10

2015:
1. Clouds of Sils Maria
2. Mistress America
3. Carol (6 nominations)
4. Brooklyn (best picture nominee and two others)
5. Mad Max: Fury Road (best picture nominee and lots of others)
6. Inside Out (animated winner)
7. Taxi
8. The Forbidden Room
9. Queen of Earth
10. It Follows

2014:
1. Only Lovers Left Alive
2. Stray Dogs
3. Boyhood (best picture nominee and others)
4. Maps to the Stars
5. The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (animated nominee)
6. Winter Sleep
7. Nymphomaniac
8. We are the Best!
9. Under the Skin
10. The Grand Budapest Hotel (best picture nominee and others)

So basically there is usually at least something I'm a big fan of at the oscars but generally not much, most nominees and winners there lie in the "good but ultimately forgettable" range for me.

For this year Phantom Thread will probably get actor and score nominations and its my favorite of the year, so thats something, and Call Me By Your Name and Blade Runner 2049 are both in my top 10 and they will probably get some nominations. Winner for best picture will probably be Lady Bird or Three Billboards though, and maybe Get Out or The Post as well)

For shows my favorites don't really show up. My favorite shows this year, The Leftovers and Twin Peaks, only had one nomination between the two of them (Kyle for best actor in limited series). Handmaids Tale is good but certainly not the best of the year and I'm glad to see Big Little Lies and Fargo getting some stuff but ultimately I don't watch most of what is nominated for tv unlike film.
