Best Director:

Christopher Nolan - Dunkirk
Greta Gerwig - Lady Bird
Guillermo Del Toro - Shape of Water
Jordon Peele - Get Out
Paul Thomas Anderson - Phantom Threads

I can't see a clear cut winner because none of these are the types that the Oscars choose.

I'll admit there's some great directors here, especially PT Anderson, but this one isn't flashy or even noticeable. It's very subtle.

Do people seriously still care about the Oscar's?

Let's all go watch a bunch of celebrities buy some awards and then pat themselves on the back because they think they have a bigger impact on society than they do. Sounds like a blast.

Yea. It's why I don't pay attention anymore. The Oscar's seem to be constantly about bragging and self-congratulations as opposed to, you know, actual movie quality and the like.

War movies frequently win and the Oscars has been criticized for not enough "color" (despite 7 Years a Slave winning just a few years earlier...) so Get Out, a social satire, seems an easy nod.

Yeah, Moonlight just won best picture last year. That was the year people were complaining about no-color.

This year, people are complaining about women's rights. So it's either gonna be Lady Bird or 3 Billboards for best picture

Del Toro is definitely winning director. Its hardly even a question. Doesnt deserve it as much as PTA of course but he will win. Also Shape of Water is definitely the frontrunner at this point to win best picture after it won the PGA and McDonagh getting snubbed for director, though Three Billboards, Lady Bird, and Get Out all have a shot too.

Also not much surprising imo. Biggest surprises are Phantom Thread overperforming and getting picture and director, which I am thrilled about as it is the best film of the year, as well as Jane missing in documentary since that was considered the clear frontrunner to win.

All together I successfully predicted 81% of the oscar nominees. Pretty good. Got 5/5 on about a third of the categories

Also my ranking of the best picture nominees
1. Phantom Thread - masterpiece
2. Call Me By Your Name - fantastic
3. Lady Bird - great
4. Dunkirk - very good
5. Get Out - pretty good
6. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri - good
7. Darkest Hour - good
8. The Shape of Water - fine
9. The Post - eh, decent I suppose

So none i dislike which is good. Usually there is always a few I think aren't good or in some cases aggregiously bad (such as The Revenant, Hidden Figures and American Sniper in recent years)

The squeaky wheel gets the grease, as they say. So we should raise a SJW-themed campaign for our favorite film next year.

What? The Wind Rises is one of Miyazaki's best films (my personal favorite) versus some random Disney trash that got a lot of merchandise.

The Wind Rises would've been in the animation category of foreign films (like Persepolis); so it and Frozen wouldn't have competed for best picture since the academy is trying to promote American films. It's taken them decades to even recognize that foreign films deserve a shot at Best Picture; they haven't reached the point where animated foreign films should be nominated for Best Animated Picture.

Personally I think the only reason they gave Christopher Plumber a nomination for "All the money in the world" was because he took over Kevin Spacey's role, and the academy was like "fuck you Spacey"
