The analogy may work if you picture nationalism as a country that is somehow one individual, sure. But it doesn't work for those individuals who follow nationalism and believe in it.

That's literally what nationalism is though. A strong unity between citizen and country is one of the hallmarks of the ideal. A pure nationalist (and yes I realize most nationalists wouldn't be considered this) is treating his country with the same respect he is treating his very own home.

So then the idea is just as dumb as the analogy? Cool.

And you even admit most nationalists would not fall under that. Which means most nationalists are going to fall under something closer to the "I don't want a random dude in the same shopping mall" analogy. Which means a lot of nationalists are going to be more likely to be racist than "pure."

Well no because you are not you in this analogy either. You are the Russian Federation. And yes the Russian Federation is gonna see this dude at all times.

Now, this is kinda why Nationalism has some problems-- because I don't want the country getting all up in my business that much-- but the analogy is accurate to what the ideal of Nationalism is.

Which is effectively what nationalism is on the individual level

Nah. Your house is your country in this analogy. Random dude in the shopping mall is if nationalism didn't allow dudes in neighboring countries either.

But the analogy doesn't work. Unlike a house but much like a shopping mall, the chances of you even seeing this random dude are slim.

Not really, no

You'd let your brother or mother or friend spend the night at your house no problem if they needed somewhere to rest, or maybe even lend a few hundred bucks to em. You might even let someone you only casually knew from school if they really needed a place.

You wouldn't let some random dude off the street spend the night-- regardless of his race, you'd show some basic level of caution.

That's all nationalism is. Just at the level of country rather than home. I'm not saying that it's the best way of handling things necessarily, only that as an ideology in and of itself it's not really racist at all.

Right, but they still get lumped in with the right overall. While it may not be the case here, the issue in general with stuff like "alt-left" on the internet seems to be any connection to the "left" at all.

It really doesn't matter what they are. I see "someone hits someone with a car" and I assume a hick. Call that a stereotype, I acknowledge that it is, but whatever.

I'm just saying unless you're arguing there's something specifically alt-right that encourages hitting people with cars, it's kinda not relevant to the politics. It might be relevant to the people who tend to subscribe to it, but the core of the issue is the extreme divisiveness that the political spectrum fosters tends to drive both sides to things that should not be considered acceptable in society by any stretch.

Basically I think the wrong correlations are being drawn between what causes someone to hit someone with a car. You're making it a political thing but I think the politics are just the things removing the inhibition and fostering the hatred there. The action in and of itself isn't really political

What do you consider the politics of the alt-right and alt-left? Because I'm having a hard time thinking "White supremacy" in itself, even without attributing the people/actions to it, isn't worse than whatever the other side is.

Corrik, when you make a statement such as "this thing is as bad as this other thing," you immediately are comparing what you use as an example to the worst of the examples for "the other thing"

I mean, no. You are trying to tell me what I am saying at your own discretion. When I say "this is just as bad as running people over with a car", then you are correct. You are framing it and most likely there are motives to do so in this topic because instead of actually discussing the video there is more interest in minimizing it with something else from the other side to handwave it.

When you say "This thing is as bad as this other thing," you are equating it to the worst thing, yes. Nobody says "Jim is just as bad as John" and means "Jim is as bad as John when John's having a good day and not really being that bad."

Well, the problem is the mindset and the "us vs them" mentality that causes the extremists to think either action is something that's acceptable. The specifics behind the action are going to vary based on the individual. There's nothing inherently far right about hitting a dude with a car.

Trying to specifically make it about hitting a dude with a car vs a dumbass filibuster is just trying to win the argument for the sake of winning an argument. That's clearly not what he was getting at

"Both are a problem" is a different argument than "X is just as bad as Y." The latter is an attempt to either make something seem less bad, or imply something else is of that same level, in an attempt to make whatever side you're supporting not stand out so much as "This is bad."

Neither are acceptable, yes, that is true. But to go "X is just as bad as Y" is an attempt to try to absolve one side a bit.

How do you keep using these as some kind of pushback when you are literally arguing in support of it.

Like, what's wrong with you

I'm sorry the part of your brain in charge of logical deduction cannot figure out what I am saying.

Is this your way of making me reconsider male biological imperatives?

He came at you with a negative statement. You countered in the same way. But you can't do that when you are literally supporting what caused it.

If you want to paint a room brown and he wants to paint it blue, and he goes "Just think of all the people who wish they had blue rooms," you can't then go "Just think of all the people forced to have brown rooms." That's just... Stupid.

You're literally trying to argue in the "Counter this bad thing with this bad thing" way when you support what's causing the bad thing you're trying to counter with in the first place. You're trying to counter his "This inequality example is bad" with "Well, this inequality example is bad, too," but you WANT inequality.

Far left is just as bad as the Far Right and many of you exhibit the behavior they encompass.

lol

For those who actually care, the video is a small group of students (I believe 5) protesting having to take the midterm and wanting it postponed or being made into a take home test due to a demonstration previously. The professor hears them out (as the students rant and tell the other students they have to shut up and must listen to them). They try pressuring the professor and even question his character. When he reaffirms the exam will be taken as scheduled, they walk out and say the people and the professor taking the tests are "White Supremacists".

This is at Cal Berkeley. OFC

I get your point, but you probably shouldn't use this as your example for "The far left is as bad as the far right" when your example for the far left is "They walked out on an exam" and a recent example for the far right is "They ran people down with a car and killed somebody."

What "biological differences" should cause a man to lose more in a divorce?
What "biological differences" should cause women to make less money than men in non-manual labor jobs?
What "biological differences" say that a work place shouldn't have equality?

Is there something biological about men that makes them able to type on a keyboard better, or something that says "You're going to be the one to lose big in a divorce."

I'd actually agree with this. The third episode of Discovery was probably better than most of the Orville episodes in overall quality, but it really didn't feel like Star Trek. Orville, whatever you think of the quality, screams Star Trek at every turn, and that's what I like about it. I'm not gonna sit here and say it's a great show, but I wanted something campy like the original Star Trek and that's exactly what it is, so I'm entertained by it.

Well, then it's not unusual, either. As icon stated, "Live with parents" now beats out any other single category for 18-34.

Definitely disagree with Mac that the motivation for Gonta to kill wasn't good. Somebody as pure as Gonta would've been absolutely rocked by the truth, and his desire to protect people definitely would've made him want to keep them from knowing... Everybody's dead, everything's gone, they were the only hope and failed, and so on since it most certainly would've brought out the worst in everyone like it did. Gonna try to finish this today to see where it goes.

My question would be what are people doing with these high powered/assault/whatever guns that it's like "I'll die before you regulate these!" to people.

Why do people love guns SO MUCH? I get fighting for the right to own one, but I don't get where the fetishistic appeal comes from

people tend to be driven by fear a lot of the time. owning a gun makes them feel safe, as opposed to powerless if they were unavailable

that's my hot take, anyway

I'd agree with this for some people who fight for the right to own them, but the ones that go above and beyond like Jakyl is describing probably do it to feel powerful, yeah.

I really thought that World Cup would have been moved to another host nation by now

Well then you know the reason why the US voted no.

They don't care the specifics. If it's "death penalty," they vote in favor of it.

Why would you want to talk to any of us

We all have asperger for not agreeing with you, remember
