The CCENT exam, aka ICND1, is not a waste of money. That's the first exam you take if you opt for the two-exam route, which is generally recommended for first-timers. The composite exam might be better if you're just recertifying, but it's much more difficult than ICND1 and 2 individually.
(edited 10/6/2017 11:47:54 AM)

I'm open to corrections. Everything I've heard from friends is to stick with CCNA as your entry level cert. Like I said, I'm not in the networking field so I'm going on hear say.

3khc posted...
And you earned this positions simply by doing certifications?

No.I have a bachelors and two associates in CS. Most places do want you to have either an A+ cert or an associates. Networking field is a little different where they are so cert focused that you can get by without a college degree. Hell if you earn a CCIE, you are guaranteed a $100k+ salary from what my networking friend told me. That's also what he has and makes.

There is a point in your career where they no longer care what degree you have. Only the work experience you have. Degree is to get your foot in the door. Which....I'm sure is the case for a lot of career fields. So take on as many responsibilities outside the scope of your job that your boss will give you. Every project you work on is another feather in your cap to put on your resume. Learn to automate/simplify your day to day tasks as much as possible so you can tell your boss that you're bored and want more things to do. If your job doesn't allow for growth, then get a new job. This also goes back to the job hopping advise I said a few posts ago.

Yeah all my previous jobs were sys admin so I'd be doing hardware support, vm support, and helpdesk support. Now I only focus on the hardware. No helpdesk, Active Directory, Exchange, or phone system support. The only thing I care about regarding VMs is whether they are on or off. Everything after the login is the problem of the SRE team. I'm focused on host and storage uptime only.

I think my wife's ring was around $3.5k. Canary diamond in a ring of sapphires(my birthstone). I don't think the canary was natural. I think it was treated yellow after the fact which is why it's on the cheaper side. You honestly can't tell a difference between that color and a natural color so she didn't care.

What exactly do you do again? I always notice you have a lot of info on CS/CE/IT.

Data Center Engineer. Went the System Admin career path and moved into Data Center operations earlier this year.

Can you tell me the exciting parts of your job? Like what do you look forward to everyday.

@3khc

Currently we've been doing a huge data center hardware refresh so I've been going in everyday and doing project/planning/implementation work to install and configure hardware. Then migrating production servers from the old hardware to the new hardware without a loss of connection has been really cool. "Oh you know that important server that your team spends all day working with? Yeah I moved it magically to the new hardware without you even noticing. Enjoy all of your new resources bruh."

I enjoy being able to build our entire infrastructure environment from the ground up with consultants that help me do best practice work. Then deliver it to all of our programmers and database people for them to enjoy. SQL guy: "Dude! It used to take me over 5 minutes to run that database query. Now that you've move it to the new stuff, it only took that query 5 seconds!"

Basically I like making people happy by giving them better tools to do their jobs. Then I sit back with my headphones and make sure the hardware doesn't randomly crash on itself.

I'd like to get my CCNA but I just got out of school last year and I've been trying to take it easy this year and enjoy life and earn some experience. While I was in school I was working two jobs and going to class full time, and its nice to have a more relaxing job.

Sounds like you have plenty of time now to study for a cert then. 1 full time job and part time studying. Get used to that lifestyle because you'll need to continue studying to either get new certs or recertify you existing certs.

You're just being lazy. If I was only making a paltry $13.50 then I sure as hell would be getting that cert as quick as I could so I could make more money and actually enjoy my life than stress over bills.

@BlazinBlue88 how difficult is it to learn networking for cisco certs if the person knows nothing about it?

I'm not in the Networking field so I wouldn't know personally. General consensus is about 3 months. Cisco's CCNA used to be the entry level cert but then they introduced the CCENT. Most employers only care for CCNA and up. I say study for the CCENT but don't waste your money on the exam. Once you get the networking foundations under your belt then focus on the CCNA.

I only have an associates in IT/Networking

You don't need to get a college degree to get into networking. It's all about those Cisco certs. If your current job is in your career field then you can(more often than not) get your employer to pay the cost of the exams.

Also job hop every year or so. You make more money taking your work experience to other jobs than waiting to get promoted/raise at the same place.

Seriously, networking has the one of the best salary/amount of years experience needed ratios in IT. As long as you have the Cisco certs then they'll rain down the money on you. My friend went from a bs $35k network tech support job to a 6 figure network architect job in 4 years because he spent all his time studying for the next level of Cisco cert.

Wouldn't a remake basically just be telling the same story but adding your own flare to it? Like, for example, Fright Night.
The 2011 film take a lot of liberties with some of the characters and major plot points from the 1985 film, but at the end of the day, it's still telling the same story.

Didn't I basically say that?

Office jobs that pay you $100K to work a few hours everyday then dick around for the last 6 hours.

I'll be honest, I get paid close to that and typically the only truly busy time are the first four or five business days of the month. After that I have regular reports to run and projections to make and what not but I've streamlined almost all of it so much so that many of them are done automatically. There are usually several days a week where I literally don't have to do any work at all the entire day. Most Fridays I work from home and "work".

Besides the 4-5 busy days you mentioned then you've described my job to a tee.

The biggest thing in an office job is spreading 2 hours of work across 8 hours. Course my job doesn't require me to be in the office all 8 hours like most. I can just come and go as I please.

Oh I'm a Data Center Engineer in case anyone was wondering. Spend my free work time on gfaqs, listening to music, working on my Retropie, and studying for my certifications or python for fun.

Yeah that was my tech support roles. Helpdesk support, server support, telephone system, and everything else under the sun. All the responsibility and power which is great but you have people coming to you for everything. You'll have shit like a production server down and at the same time a user that locked themselves out of their computer.

Obviously, the server is more important so you're working on that while the user is putting in a complaint with their boss/your boss that you aren't doing your job cause you aren't helping them. If you were to focus on her, your boss/higher exec would be flipping out because the prod server issue wasn't being resolved. You literally can't win when you're in that job situation.

Job specialization is your friend. Be in charge of a little bit and have everyone else do everything else.
