80) Ohio vs 177) Mercer

The Bobcats receive the opening kickoff and......throw a pick on their 3rd play from scrimmage. Carter Peevy immediately throws a 24-yard touchdown pass to Parker Wroble on the next play, and Mercer, after kicking off, has the 7-0 lead one minute into the game. The teams trade punts but Mercer moves the ball a bit more than Ohio, eventually pinning them at their own 4. Another Ohio 3-and-out gives Mercer a short field, and they find the end zone again, on a 21-yard pass to Ty James. Ohio's offense is just totally anemic, and Tyrell Coard runs in a 9-yard touchdown right before halftime, set up by two long completions by Peevy. 21-0 Mercer.

Finally, Ohio manages some points, with Gianni Spetic hitting a 39-yard field goal early in the 2nd half. They need touchdowns though, and after forcing a Mercer punt at midfield, they drive the ball 79 yards for their first TD of the game, a 7-yard pass by Kurtis Rourke to Miles Cross, on the crossing route. The Bobcat defense forces a 3-and-out, but they opt to kick a field goal on 4th & 1 from the Mercer 9, and.......miss. Mercer uses this opportunity to unleash a crushing 91-yard drive, dominating the line of scrimmage, averaging almost 4 1/2 yards a carry on 8 runs. They take a 28-10 lead and there's not nearly enough time left for Ohio, even if they had a good offense (Kurtis Rourke is picked off again, as a reminder that.......they don't).

177) Mercer 28, 80) Ohio 10
Ohio - 0 | 0 | 10 | 0
Mercer - 14 | 7 | 0 | 7

49) Kansas vs 208) Alabama State

The two teams trade one-play touchdown "drives" in the 1st quarter - Bama State with a 30-yard pass, and Kansas's Jalon Daniels with an 80-yard bomb the next play from scrimmage. Kansas adds a field goal and another touchdown pass to take a 17-7 lead into halftime.

The Jayhawks and Jalon Daniels pick up where they left off, throwing a 19-yard TD toss to Devin Neal to open the 2nd half. Bama State responds with an impressive 80-yard touchdown drive, but Kansas then finishes the Hornets off with 17 straight points.

49) Kansas 41, 208) Alabama State 14
Kansas - 7 | 10 | 10 | 14
Alabama State - 7 | 0 | 7 | 0

Jalon Daniels: 19/26 passing, 308 yards, 4 TDs. Devin Neal: 12 carries/130 yards; 4 catches/86 yards including 1 TD

Somehow, Sagarin still likes Clemson enough to give them their own region (they'd be the worst "1 seed")

49) Kansas vs 208) Alabama State

16) Clemson vs 241) Norfolk State

Clemson opens up the scoring after getting the ball at the Norfolk State 35, with Antonio Williams hauling in a 3-yard touchdown pass. A missed chip shot by Robert Gunn III at the end of another short Clemson drive keeps the score at 7-0. The teams trade punts before Gunn misses again, this time from long range. The Tigers again get great field position and this time find the end zone with a 6-yard TD run by Will Shipley. Their offense finishes the half strong, marching 80 yards with balanced play-calling between run and pass, ending with a 10-yard TD throw from Klubnik to Phil Mafah. 21-0 Clemson at the break.

Gunn continues to struggle, missing from 46 yards on Clemson's opening drive of the 2nd half. Norfolk State has a chance to get on the board with a 38-yard kick, but that's no good as well. More punts are traded before a big return sets Clemson up at the Spartan 28, and they quickly find the end zone on a 6-yard Shipley scamper. Gunn attempts another field goal on Clemson's next possession, from 50 yards out - same result as before. Clemson picks off the Norfolk QB the very next play, and the Tiger offense sets Gunn up again from just 23 yards out, and the kick is.......GOOD. VINDICATION for Gunn Triple.

Then he missed a 38-yarder.

16) Clemson 31, 241) Norfolk State 0
Clemson - 0 | 21 | 0 | 10
Norfolk State - 0 | 0 | 0 | 0

Clemson with the tournament's first shutout victory. Gunn misfired with 5 FG misses on 6 attempts. The Norfolk QB was just as bad, completing only 8 passes on 25 attempts, with 1 pick.

113) Old Dominion vs 144) UConn

Old Dominion comes out and demoralizes the Husky defense, going 80 yards and 4/4 on 3rd downs on their way to the end zone on the opening drive of the game. After forcing a 3-and-out, Grant Wilson completes two 25-yard passes for the Monarchs, the second for a touchdown. Another 3-and-out for UConn, then Wilson throws a 78-yard bomb to Javon Harvey, and this one looks like it could get ugly. UConn is still looking for their first 1st down - another 3-and-out leads to a long field goal for Old Dominion to start the 2nd quarter. FINALLY UConn gets a first down - not only that, but they return Old Dominion's first punt of the game 64 yards for a TD to get on the board. Grant Wilson doesn't like that one bit - he immediately completes 2 passes for 74 combined yards, setting up a Keshawn Wicks TD run from 6 yards out. UConn actually puts together a nice 80-yard TD drive.....then Monarch RB Devin Roche takes a handoff 80 yards for an immediate rebuttal. Old Dominion leads 38-14 after a dominant 1st half offensively.

The teams trade missed field goals from long range early in the 2nd half. UConn then forces a 3-and-out and gets a nice punt return to set them up at midfield, where Ta'Quan Roberson airs it out on the first play of the drive, to Cameron Ross, 52 yards for the score. Old Dominion moves the ball to midfield but stalls, pinning UConn at their own 10 on the ensuing punt. Ta'Quan Roberson stays red-hot, completing 4 passes for 66 combined yards, including a short 3-yard TD toss to Ross to cut the lead to 10 early in the 4th quarter. UConn gets another stop and has the ball at midfield, but Ta'Quan throws his first interception at an inopportune time. The Husky defense has his back, forcing two straight 3-and-outs - UConn misses a field goal after the first stop, but after the second, Ta'Quan connects with Ross again to cut the lead to just 3 with just over a minute to go. The onside kick fails, and UConn must essentially get one more 3-and-out to have a chance. The defense, which had been almost perfect this half, can't quite get their offense the ball in time, allowing an 11-yard run on first down. After using their timeouts, UConn does get the ball back in their own territory, but with only a few seconds left. Their hook-and-ladder rugby play barely goes anywhere as time expires.

113) Old Dominion 38, 144) UConn 35
Old Dominion - 21 | 17 | 0 | 0
UConn - 0 | 14 | 7 | 14

UConn's defense absolutely shut down Old Dominion in the 2nd half, but their offense/special teams come up just short

32) Syracuse vs 225) SE Louisiana

Garrett Shrader is picked off on a deep ball on Syracuse's first possession, leading to a 4-yard touchdown pass for the Lions (a lotta 'Lions' in FCS apparently). The SE Louisiana defense then forces a 3-and-out and marches it right back down the field for a 5-yard touchdown run, and it's already looking like another FCS school will pull a shocker. The Lions add a field goal in the 2nd quarter, then the Syracuse offense finally busts a big play - a 44-yard touchdown pass to Damien Alford to make it 17-7.

The Orange offense continues to move the ball in the 3rd quarter with a 59-yard touchdown drive, and they're back in it. SE Louisiana puts together a solid drive but stalls just inside the 30, settling for a TEAM field goal from 41 yards out. 'Cuse still just down one possession heading into the 4th quarter, and the offense stays dialed in, converting three 3rd downs on an 80-yard touchdown drive, taking their first lead of the game. A 3-and-out and solid punt return give the Orange good field position, and they capitalize with a Brady Denaburg FG from 40 yards out, giving them a 24-20 lead with 7 minutes left. SE Louisiana runs hurry up, with Zachary Clement completing 5 of 6 passes before stalling at the Syracuse 20. Their coach has enough faith in his defense to kick the field goal on 4th & 8, and the Lions must force a stop with only 4 minutes left.

Syracuse picks up one first down but can't convert on 3rd & 6 - SE Louisiana gets the ball back with a chance to run a 2-minute drill for the win. Three 10+ yard plays get the ball into field goal range with just 30 seconds left, but a killer false start penalty moves them to the edge of TEAM's range. Clement completes a pass to Darius Lewis, who is tackled in-bounds at the Syracuse 17 - a very makeable field goal - but the Lions are out of timeouts. They scramble to get the field goal unit on in time, but they can't get the snap off. Syracuse survives in a game SE Louisiana could have and probably should have had.

32) Syracuse 24, 225) SE Louisiana 23
Syracuse - 0 | 7 | 7 | 10
SE Louisiana - 14 | 3 | 3 | 3

Sorry to all the Southeast Louisiana fans out there. Outgained Syracuse on offense 397 yards to 328, and had no turnovers, but.......game management

97) Arizona State vs 160) Robert Morris

We stay with the Pac-12 as the Sun Devils open vs Robert Morris out of the 4-team Big South. The Colonials get on the board first with a 51-yard field goal (the website doesn't have the kicker's name - it just says "TEAM"), and their defense immediately picks off Jacob Conover to get right back in field goal range. The offense can't move the ball but another TEAM field goal gives Robert Morris the 6-0 lead. The teams trade punts for a while, before Conover is intercepted again, leading to a Robert Morris touchdown. The Colonials take a 13-0 lead into the locker room.

The 2nd half starts with - you guessed it - a Jacob Conover interception. Robert Morris again converts the turnover into points as their sure-legged kicker TEAM pushes the lead to 16-0. Jacob Conover throws his 4th pick, and is somehow still in the game. A 5th pick leads to another TEAM field goal and it is 19-0 Robert Morris. It is the 4th quarter. Jacob Conover is intercepted a 6th time. 7 now. Finally, the Sun Devil running back is able to prevent a shutout with a 40-yard dash, but it's far too late.

160) Robert Morris 19, 97) Arizona State 7
Arizona State - 0 | 0 | 0 | 7

More like Jacob Turnover. Colonials only run for 41 yards but provide our first major upset.

33) Washington State vs 224) Lindenwood

Wazzou jumps out to a 14-0 lead, but can't move the ball much in the 2nd quarter - 17-7 at half. The Cougars push the lead to 20 in the 3rd quarter and looked to have this wrapped up, but Lindenwood refused to go away. They answered with an 80-yard TD drive, then kicked a 46-yard field goal to make it 27-17. Somehow this was interesting in the 4th quarter....for about 30 seconds, then Wazzou iced it with an 80-yard TD drive of their own.

33) Washington State 37, 224) Lindenwood 17
Washington State - 14 | 3 | 10 | 10
Lindenwood - 0 | 7 | 7 | 3

If Lindenwood's QB had been at least average, this could have been a game. Unfortunately he had been studying Tennessee State game tape, and went 12/31.

An in-state in-conference match-up already! Probably considered rivals ? But not sure

This was a tremendous game if you hate offense. The Saluki kicker went 0/3 on field goal attempts, missing from 38, 30, and 26 yards. Impressive. For whatever reason, the sim is refusing to allow the losing team to score anything other than 7 points.

btw, all games are neutral-site

We begin the first round with Georgia's region:

1) Georgia vs 256) Drake
128) Buffalo vs 129) Southern Miss
65) North Dakota State vs 192) North Alabama
64) Wake Forest vs 193) Tennessee State

96) Southern Illinois vs 161) Illinois State
33) Washington State vs 224) Lindenwood
97) Arizona State vs 160) Robert Morris
32) Syracuse vs 225) SE Louisiana

---

1) Georgia vs 256) Drake

Incredibly, Drake strikes first when running back Christian Galvan punches it in at the goal line, and the Bulldogs end the 1st quarter with a 7-3 lead over...the Bulldogs. Georgia can only manage one first half TD, an 8-yard pass to Brock Bowers in the 2nd quarter, and they take a 10-7 lead into halftime.

Georgia's offense finally starts to get moving in the 3rd quarter, going 62 yards in 4 plays, ending with a 22-yard TD pass to Cash Jones. Now Georgia's looking like Georgia, forcing a quick 3-and-out before scoring on another touchdown pass, this time to Dominic Lovett from 10 yards out. They intercept Drake the very next play from scrimmage, and push the lead to 27-7 with a field goal. Georgia's pass game continues to roll into the 4th quarter, as Carson Beck throws 2 more TD passes - to CJ Smith and Dillon Bell respectively - and Peyton Woodring tacks on one more field goal as time expires.

1) Georgia 44, 256) Drake 7
Georgia - 3 | 7 | 17 | 17
Drake - 7 | 0 | 0 | 0

Bit of a slow start by Georgia, like we saw irl last weekend against South Carolina. Well done to Drake for leading for a quarter. Carson Beck finished with 414 passing yards, and threw touchdown passes to 5 different receivers.

128) Buffalo vs 129) Southern Miss

First game featuring two FBS opponents; the two most average teams in D1 (according to Sagarin)

Buffalo outscores the Golden Eagles 10-0 in the 1st quarter, but Southern Miss drives the ball 80 yards for a touchdown to start the 2nd. 10-7 at halftime.

A big punt return for Buffalo sets up a 27-yard TD pass on 1st down to Marlyn Johnson, and Buffalo pushes the lead back to 10 early in the 3rd. Southern Miss's offense simply cannot get anything going after their 2nd quarter TD drive, and a Buffalo field goal is the only score in the 4th quarter.

128) Buffalo 20, Southern Miss 7
Buffalo - 10 | 0 | 7 | 3
Southern Miss - 0 | 7 | 0 | 0

The two punters combined for 21 punts and 886 yards

65) North Dakota State 40, 192) North Alabama 7
North Dakota State - 13 | 7 | 10 | 10
North Alabama - 0 | 0 | 0 | 7

Not surprisingly, this one was never in doubt - North Dakota State is the 2nd-highest rated FCS school, behind South Dakota State.

The Bison defense was very sharp, taking a shutout into the 4th quarter before North Alabama got on the board in garbage time. The offense was equally impressive - their quarterback, Cam Miller, was highly efficient, completing 20/24 passes with 3 touchdowns, for a remarkable 210 QB rating. The ND State ground game wore down the Lion front seven, averaging almost 5.5 yards/carry as a team.

64) Wake Forest 49, 193) Tennessee State 7
Wake Forest - 17 | 10 | 10 | 12
Tennessee State - 0 | 7 | 0 | 0

That went about as expected. Amazing way to get to 49 points: 5 TDs, 4 field goals, and a safety. Saddest stat of the game: Tennessee State QB Deveon Bryant completed only 8 passes on 23 attempts.

---PLAY-IN ROUND---

To see who gets sacrificed to Georgia.....

256) Drake vs 257) Valparaiso
NOT ENOUGH DATA AVAILABLE TO RUN SIMULATIONS FOR VALPORAISO

Dang - 0-for-1 on simming games so far - Drake Bulldogs advance!

258) Stetson 15, 255) Delaware State 3

annnnnnd the play-in round between the bottom-barrel FCS teams starts off about how youd expect. Stetson takes it, 5 field goals to 1 in a truly regrettable display. All 12 people in attendance were appalled. I guess this is technically an upset, but its hard to imagine a worse team in FCS irl than the Hornets - they usually collect a check to come get a beatdown by an FBS team once a year. Even one of Rich Rods Michigan teams was able to beat them by 50.

254) Wagner vs 259) Morehead State

Now this is the Eagles/Seahawks match-up I want to see. Wagner has the honor of scoring the first touchdown of the tournament - and the first 17 points in fact. Morehead finally managed to get on the board with a field goal to end the first half, and built on that momentum after halftime, quickly tying the game. The teams traded field goals in the 4th quarter, and a red zone interception by Moreheads quarterback ended their hopes of winning in regulation.

The Morehead defense stood tall to start overtime, forcing a 3-and-out field goal. Then, on their first offensive play, running back Caleb Ramseur took a handoff and went 25-yards for the walk-off touchdown, completing the comeback.

259) Morehead State 26, 254) Wagner 23 (OT)

253) Mississippi Valley State vs 260) Marist
NOT ENOUGH DATA AVAILABLE TO RUN SIMULATIONS FOR MISSISSIPPI VALLEY STATE

Congrats to Marist - they will be 71-point underdogs against Oklahoma, according to Sagarin

261) Presbyterian 49, 252) Arkansas Pine-Bluff 7

In one of the better mascot match-ups of the tournament, the bottom-seeded Blue Hose lay the hurt on the Golden Lions.

I'm bored at work and no college football for 2 whole days!! So this seemed like fun

Bracket: https://challonge.com/kvn2mn0e
Seeding based on: http://sagarin.com/sports/cfsend.htm
Website for simulations: https://www.ncaagamesim.com/

^The website does not include a handful of FCS teams, but I'm not sure which ones - so we can find out together! If a team is unavailable, they will be DQ'd and their opponent will advance. In the event both teams are unavailable, the team awaiting the winner gets a bye.

There are 261 Division 1 football teams in all, so we almost have a nice square 256-team bracket - just have to sim 5 play-in games.

Let's begin!

Honorable mention to Mario Party 10. While the game itself may have been mediocre, the actual implementation of the 1v4 mode within the construct of the game was quite good, and shows how it could be done again (except not really because there won't be any more consoles like the Wii U, so the chance is gone). But it was there.

(Edit: I guess "formula" is the word I was missing. The formula in Mario Party 10 was good.)

It's tough cuz every track is great, but I eventually had to go with DeDeDe - as a kid I remember stopping to just listen to the music for a while before continuing with the boss rush. The first video game track I remember enjoying outside of the game.

DeDeDe > Green Greens > Bubbly Clouds > Float Islands > Castle LoLoLo > Credits

and the credits music is still like 7/10
