I did my 8 cavern runs this week for the battle pass, doing the shielder/lightning domain for Gepard and Kafka. Aside from maybe a glove/hat or two, it's pretty much all trash in terms of 5* relics. The consistency of just leveling people and filling out team options feels better to me. Maybe if you have two really good team comps between 8 units already, but my pulls were kind of all over the place initially. For instance, Bard having no use for MP except for "Foe Requiem" which gave every enemy nearby it a Vulnerability Up debuff. Yeah it was good. Not a big deal, it's just a transparent excuse to have an Ivalice crossover, but it was extremely boring. But the fights themselves are pretty spectacular. Only thing is...they made them too difficult for casual content. Especially the final tier which had to be nerfed multiple times. They're easier now due to gear and class changes, but at the time failed runs were very common. People would literally remove gear to make sure they didn't get them in roulette, and it was a huge pain for new people trying to complete them. So those also get plenty of hate even still. Do you mean like interesting new mechanics like catching Susanos sword? Stormblood was the start of them streamlining a lot of job mechanics, something they've continued to iterate on in each expansion. Mechanically, Stormblood at release was probably the sweet spot between jobs being complexity and simplicity. There used to be useless or poorly designed stats that no longer exist (accuracy, for example, you could miss enemies unless you had enough, was deleted in Stormblood). Red Mage and Samurai were both well received new jobs. And yeah, the fight design has that added flair you're talking about because they spent the back half of Heavensward learning a lot of lessons, and Stormblood gets to be the first expansion where they can implement all of them from the beginning. If you compare the raid fights between it and Heavensward (where it took them two tiers to figure out what they were doing), you'll see what I mean. Or even specifically within Heavensward - in the Warring Triad questline there's one fight where you can fall off a platform and you're just fucking dead forever, Titan-style. The fight after that is where they changed that so your corpse can be revived, and that's affected every fight going forward (and maybe they've patched those old fights, idk). Mechanically there weren't a lot of problems except they really fucked up a couple of job rebalances at release. Besides that the game had already been a well-oiled machine since 3.4. My real issue is Ice now. Gepard is great sustain but is useless otherwise. For one, they use mesoamerican-inspired theming somewhat frequently already (thinking Rak'tika Greatwood for example), for another it seems really easy to fuck up if you're just doing "The Road to El Dorado: Final Fantasy Edition." Charging with Otachi is lol on most enemies I kinda hesitate to say it's too easy because it seems like it would be decently complex for people who haven't played much of the series, but knowing all the tricks and mechanics from the other game simplifies things immensely and lets you take advantage of the new shit. I think conceptually Seasons is intended to be a bit more "combat" focused and Ages a bit more "puzzle" focused but it's not a super huge difference in difficulty or complexity between the two or LA. Well, there's one super obnoxious minigame in Ages if you have a bad sense of rhythm/timing but I don't remember offhand if you have to do it to complete the game or if you just had to do it for a piece of heart. I mean I definitely think there's a step up in complexity from LA, it's taking that structure and adding stuff on top of it (map gimmicks, for one, not to mention the link system). There's a lot of weird experiments like seeds and the animal buddies too, and these things are a lot more refined than Minish Cap's experiments imo. Whether or not that's good or bad is up to you, but if you're high on LA you should enjoy the oracles. I'm not sure "chill" is the right word - it is very satisfying to be able to multitask but you're basically still always active. While you don't have to be, there's still tons of fun in the optimization. Case in point is probably the dandori challenges which are small missions with a time limit. You can clear with a low rank but it's extremely fun to replay them and go for the highest ranking which is actually pretty tight! I don't know what it is about the overworld enemies but they are super fucking tanky at this high EL. Going into the "elite" enemies on the map with a slightly wrong element team and autobattle going for like, 10 minutes. It's obvious they just didn't want to touch it because the story dealt with slavery and they had no idea how to handle it, which is laughable. And tbh it wasn't even worth it? She NEEDS lots of weakness break happening for her follow ups. Jing Yuan is so much better as an Erudition unit because he always has his summon. If you just need a fire support unit don't sleep on Asta. Probably but the issue is the game does not give you a good indication on which ones have developed story and which ones are the grindy filler. Most games these days do make a distinction! Even FF14 does, the sidequest chains that are fleshed out side stories have little story arts. I also think you get a really bad impression of sidequests since all the pre-timeskip ones are nothing (and they have to be when the story hasn't really kicked off yet!). The other issue I have is just that the MMO-style quest format is extremely grating in this game, the kind of talk to this person, move somewhere else talk again, go fight some mobs, talk to a person two more times, it just takes too long to get around in this game. I don't have my flying mount, you know? The genre is massive and has been expanding out of the range of just being for teenagers, that's why there's so much trash. And god damn is she a complete monster in AOE. Having her 5* light cone is probably putting in a ton of work but still. I'm really gonna miss this double calyx buff.
