I'm not sure who is what in terms of competitive, but I've always loved Squirtle due to the one that wears shades in the anime. Out of 150 variants I have(not including splits) 36 pixel variants, I have bought 37 variants(either through battle pass or shop) which means I have obtained 77 variants that are not pixel for free. It's definitely not as bad as I thought it was. I was actually surprised to see I even had that many variants. (Some of the variants I counted as free might have been purchased but if I couldn't remember for sure I counted it as a free variant just to be safe, margin of error is 5.) My card with the most variants is, Wasp, Iceman, Ebony Maw, Wolverine and Spider-Man with 3 each.
