Yes, the candy labelled as Smarties in America is just compacted sugar.

If you are looking for a small chocolate in a candy shell, M&Ms are available in America.

You are getting your Smarties mixed up.

Smartiers in the US are small round tablet candies. They are sold as Rockets in Canada as Canada gets Nestle Smarties like us.

Smarties for everyone else are candy coated chocolate beans invented by Rowantree/Mackintosh.

Why aren't Nestle Smarties available in the United States?
Although Nestle Smarties entered production in 1937, this was only in the UK. When Smarties was introduced in North America, Smarties Candy Company had already owned the Registered Trademark name "Smarties" in the US. Nestle Smarties are now exclusively available in Canada amongst North America.

good to know you're forever stuck with the inferior smarties

What misinformation. The chalky little sour Smarties in the US are made by Ce De Candy. The M&M type in other countries were made by another company before Nestle took over and have been around even longer.

I don't see where the 2 products are connected other than name.

that's my point, the misinformation being that Smarties in the US are the same as Smarties elsewhere, just without chocolate inside, which would be either a strange hollow shell, or an absurdly dense tablet to break your teeth on

99% of the stuff I buy is produce, raw meat, canned foods by Hormel, Campbell's, and Coca-Cola. I don't buy much candy but when I do most of it is made by tootsie.

Maybe Nestle has got their hands in supply chains of restaurants I don't know about but I'm not that enthusiastic to research suppliers.

Yeah, they are called Rockets in Canada. I would never see them until Halloween, then I would end up eating them from November 1st to Christmas. Same with Smarties (the chocolate ones). I never see them for sale on candy bar shelves anymore, but come Halloween they are everywhere.
I'm old enough to remember when there were no blue Smarties and then they added blue ones and turned it into a whole ad campaign to find blue Smarties.

US Kinder Eggs are still a little different. Instead of the toy being inside the egg, the "egg" is two halves, with the candy sealed on one side and the toy sealed on the on the other (so the edible parts and the non-edible parts are totally isolated). And the candy side is for scooping, not chomping.
