That's fair. Stupid me sees comments about how "Britain is already primarily Muslim" or something getting 22 upvotes and wonders if people are conflating people of South Asian descent with Muslims. Not like that isn't a real thing, seeing how the TV Tropes page for "Interchangeable Asian Cultures" lists several instances where anyone with remotely brown skin gets mistaken for a Muslim. Not that discrimination against Muslims is any less wrong, but at least it's...ever so slightly easier to understand?

Not entirely related, but am I the only one who feels as if people of South Asian descent tend to face less discrimination in America and Europe compared to other "minority" groups? Or that at the very least, most of the discrimination they do face is for being Muslim (whether mistaken or not), rather than for being South Asian?

Not entirely politics-related, but I don't really understand what the verdict has been on Johnny Depp's legal problems. Best I can understand is that he is guilty of domestic and even sexual abuse of Amber Heard, but she's not entirely blameless? And speaking of recent actor controversies, I'm not even entirely sure Will Smith was in the wrong when he slugged Chris Rock. On the surface it was massively embarrassing, but in that case you're suggesting that the Oscars stage is a place to spew negativity with nigh-impunity. Most of Rock's comedy comes off as overly mean-spirited to me anyway.

Another realization of mine, it's so priceless for people to complain about "thoughtcrimes" when they're putting all of their thoughts on the Internet in the most public way possible. Game designer Troy Leavitt (who recently stepped down from working on Hogwarts Legacy) put out a video long ago asking if thoughtcrimes are real and had a picture of Trump right on the thumbnail.

These are the people I followed in 2016-2020. What a dark time.

On a similar note, somehow it has only been this month where I've realized that people who complain about so-called thoughtcrimes online (at least on YouTube) tend to be the ones who make multi-hour videos of inflammatory statements. I'd ask how they get surprised at people rejecting their viewpoints, but I'm convinced at this point they're either bigots or unthinking animals. Possibly both. I guess I could get modded for saying this, but I think my usage of the term "animals" is more appropriate in this case than, say, white supremacists referring to people of color in the same breadth (which I admittedly take extra personally due to being born in the USA from Indian immigrants). Also no, this was not what I brought up earlier regarding the politics of people like the Critical Drinker.

That being said, to demonstrate one example of what I mean though, saying you think either Black Panther movie is terrible is not in and of itself racist. Making a two-or-so hour video called "Black Panther: An Unbridled Rage" is kind of racist, on the other hand. I don't understand how you can announce yourself to the world with such an inflammatory statement and then complain about being called racist for it, as if just the sheer act of criticizing the movie is what's being called racist when it's plainly obvious you're not doing that...then again it's MauLer, I guess I answered my own question lol.

Okay yeah, that's fair. I remember there was a time where I felt like professional critics kept hyping up every big blockbuster movie as the second coming, and then I'd just find them to be okay to decent.

Maybe film critics forgot how to enjoy movies? I saw Bullet Train last week and found it pretty enjoyable, but it has an RT score in the low 50s.

Those kids are often also taught not to go to college (especially if they're women) and to fear cities/other counrties so unfortunately some of them never do escape the bubble and become "confused when they grow older".

That's what I thought. Stupid news outlets reporting about Disney supposedly tarnishing its family-friendly image by having its bigwigs voice opposition to anti-LGBT legislation. Still sounds like cancel culture to me.

High-profile YT movie industry analyst. Formerly a member of Screen Junkies (the guys behind Honest Trailers).

I guess I could have just said I like following movie industry analysts on YT, although as I have mentioned in other topics the main analysis channel I got most of my news from between 2016-2020 turned out to be in with the alt right and I'm still bitter about it. I unsubscribed from them in 2020 due to them continually pushing a narrative that Lucasfilm was stuck in a "civil war" between so-called Kathleen Kennedy and George Lucas factions even though everyone in the company answers directly to Kennedy and she has the power to can anyone who opposes her on the spot so there's no need for such a thing, but I've been tempted to check in on it every now and then since and they've just descended further down the alt-right rabbit hole in that time.

Maybe not the best idea to bring up, but for people who genuinely do want to "shield" kids from the LGBT community on the basis that it will supposedly confuse them...aren't they just setting those kids up to be confused when they grow older? I never understood that logic, not to mention how many of these people also complain about so-called cancel culture and yet here they want to cancel the LGBT community. I don't even claim to really care that much about LGBT causes or rights and I'm still appalled.

Not entirely on-topic, but it's priceless how people like The Critical Drinker can bemoan how men are portrayed as "grown-up children" in contemporary movies when so many high-profile figures in real life are hardly much different.

Also, Ms. Marvel was my 2nd favorite installment in Phase 4 after Spider-Man, but I think I understand where a lot of the criticisms come from and I'm not going to call anyone who doesn't like it racist or sexist. Still felt like it gave me what I wanted out of Captain Marvel though. MAYBE my own South Asian heritage helped me understand some of the cultural references but I don't think it made the show for me or anything, especially since I'm not of Pakistani descent. Reminded me more of vintage John Hughes than anything, really.

Just in case someone wants clarification, this does not count the new Ant-Man movie since that is technically the start of Phase 5, and I'm specifically asking about the films. Also not counting Werewolf by Night or The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.

Anyway, the only movies in this phase I liked were Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, and Black Panther, and I thought the latter two were more decent than anything. Everything in this phase is "I like it but I get why others don't" at best other than Spider-Man.

To be fair, I mostly meant in terms of commercial success, not critical reception to quite the same extent. Also why I specified movies. Like I said earlier, I have no idea how both Sonic movies and Pokmon: Detective Pikachu have Fresh ratings on Rotten Tomatoes since they seem like everything professional critics would hate, so the only thing that even remotely makes sense to me is nostalgia for those properties. Something like that might be working for this Mario movie as well, with the reasons it's on the wrong side of Fresh possibly being reasons like the movie being animated and therefore there not being as much of a wow factor to seeing Mario on the big screen the way there was for Pokmon and Sonic (at least by comparison), or the Mario plot formula being done to death in the games for a while and/or the same being true for nostalgia pandering in the Mario franchise.

For the record, I have seen both Sonic movies and Detective Pikachu. It's just not my opinion I'm concerned about right now. So yes, I'm kind of looking at this as an industry analyst right now. You can tell I watch a lot of Dan Murrell.

Hot take: the reason video game movies are doing so well nowadays is because most blockbuster movies are effectively video games without interactivity anyways!

I remember watching The Completionist's review and he deduced that the game's age only really shows if you play it like most contemporary FPSs where you try to move fast and shoot everything in sight. In a way it kind of makes sense, seeing as you're playing as a secret agent and not a soldier of some kind.

Like, if you gave me Goldeneye and Halo along with systems to play them on, I'd choose Goldeneye. I'll also admit to having seen LPs of both (plus Halo 2).

Figured this might be an interesting question, given the recent re-release. I've only experienced the game through Let's Plays myself. I also remember The Completionist deciding that the game still works well as long as you don't play it like most modern FPSs. That makes sense in a way, given you're playing as a secret agent and not a soldier of some sort. Might still be one of the definitive Bond experiences in gaming too.

Okay, I guess we're really just out of the period where it seemed like open-world games were everywhere.

To be fair, Fallout 3 and Skyrim probably get so much criticism precisely because they were so big, on reflection.

So The Witcher 3's acclaim combined with the mixed-at-best reception to Mass Effect: Andromeda, Fallout 76, and Anthem caused a paradigm shift away from BioWare and Bethesda...and then the continued controversies around Cyberpunk 2077 tainted CD Projekt Red's reputation. Are Western-made open world games in a bit of a rut now or something? Genuinely curious here, since I remember when Fallout 3 and Skyrim were so big.

Imagine the whining if Skyward Sword beats Morrowind, given how much of a sacred cow the latter game is. I'm somewhat amazed by the board's ignorance of The Elder Scrolls, but then again half the reason I know much about the franchise at all is because my brother is into the games. Same with Fallout and Witcher.

Um, good on Disney for opposing this madness? In any case, I'm amazed how much Republicans willingly out their party as an effective cult, given how they seem to shut down any criticism of them as coming from filthy leftists and RINOs.

Anti-progressives tend to be fine with female leads as long as they're not crashing "established" brands. Given Hollywood's reliance on such, I feel like that still ends up being insultingly sexist, but to each their own I guess? I mean, I understood concerns like that for something like the Ghostbusters reboot, but not for a franchise as big as Star Wars or the Marvel Cinematic Universe because in that case it just seems like the most horrific kind of gatekeeping imaginable. I'm not entirely sure why so many Star Wars and comic book fans fail to realize the kind of conduct that has turned them into a laughingstock; the only thing I can think of is they think anyone who labels them sexist/racist is a filthy social justice warrior who only cares about infecting their political agendas into entertainment. The worst part is I don't even doubt there are agendas at work, and it's only whether they're devious political agendas I'm not terribly sure of. Especially given Disney's quest to pander to every ethnic group out there with the MCU (sorry if this offends anyone, I say this as someone who thinks Ms. Marvel is the best thing in Phase 4 that doesn't involve Spider-Man) and their repeated queerbaiting, it seems plain as day to me film studios only care about "diversity" as long as they think it gets them the green. If anything, Disney is especially bad there, but that's another topic.

I want a live-action Metroid movie made just so it includes Adam Malkovich and humiliates him as much as possible.

Oh wait I forgot Skyward Sword got a re-release not too long ago when I made this. I was thinking Morrowind got 37% on Metroid Prime in BGE3 and that I'm not sure if SS can outdo that. Plus I feel like Zelda might get genuine anti-votes and/or Morrowind might get respect votes.

I originally had Resident Evil 3 here instead of The Last of Us Part II. I figured World of Warcraft is probably even weaker now than it was in 2015, given the poor reception to recent expansion packs and Blizzard's continuing controversies.

TBH, the main reason I'm running this topic is because Skyward Sword has always come across to me as being far and away the most divisive Zelda game. Even stuff like Wind Waker and Twilight Princess has always had a vocal minority against them at best.

I'll admit I'm mostly interested in debate over Skyward Sword, and that the winner of its match probably wins the fourpack. Also holy anti-votes in the other one!

I get that, but I feel like I'd prefer to see Die Hard on a space station. Think Other M's setup minus most of that game's BS. Maybe rename the station Nakatomi even. I also genuinely like my idea of stocking the movie with as many high-profile actresses as possible...or at least I did until I realized I was naming almost entirely white actresses. Sad. Maybe Varada Sethu (Andor) could play Samus?

Side note: Yes I am genuinely watching Andor.

More on topic, to be fair it would probably be better to use something like Deep Rising or The Black Hole as a template for a Metroid movie, but I feel like most of the board would understand my mention of Die Hard better. Might also be biased since I saw the aforementioned two movies this year and didn't think either of them was that bad.

I want to see Stephen Sommers direct a Metroid movie. With Rachel Weisz as the villain, an evil counterpart of her character from Black Widow in terms of being the leader of a rogue faction of the Federation coordinating a network of spies. While you're at it, just try to stock full of every high-profile actress to make it as feminist as possible. Include Demi Moore as a bald woman who disowned her husband for going too far to defend her.

The premise would probably just be Samus and a bunch of other guys happening on an abandoned space station, done in the style of the likes of The Black Hole, Event Horizon, and Deep Rising (hence my suggestion of Sommers to direct). We might as well include John Boyega as Anthony Higgs for the full bash brothers experience so he gets more to do than he did in Star Wars.

More on topic, apparently Miyamoto wasn't responsible for anything regarding how Sticker Star turned out beyond his mandate to have an excuse plot and not create any new characters. Fair I guess.

I mean, Capcom's Inafune-less Mega Man was better-received than the spiritual successor from the man himself, which can be argued to be a parallel to how Disney-era Star Wars stuff has generally been better received than the prequel trilogy.

Welp, now the alt-right is trying to co-opt the movie's success to give a middle finger to Disney. Which I actually approve of, but not for the reasons they do, and tbh it's not like Illumination Entertainment is much of an improvement. Glad Nintendo is gaining a foothold in Hollywood, but considering Miyamoto's reputation the past decade or so I'm not entirely sure if this is the best way to do it.
