That was one of the better episodes of that season, too. Dogshit moral, was really disappointed, but compared to Arachnids in the UK it was pretty watchable.

If you're gonna watch any episodes from that season, check out Demons of the Punjab and maybe the first episode of series 11. It really fucking sucks that Chibnall dropped the ball that hard, because I fucking loved Jodie Whitaker's Doctor - she carried that show on her back. Even when the material got better during Flux, the total lack of planning and the piss-poor way it handled the villains and the previous series' mystery sent that entire season into the shitter - and yet she still put everything she had into it, and was immensely watchable the whole time.

I honestly kind of grieve for Thirteen, because she was my favorite Doctor since Ten. It's just a shame that she never got the same incredible run of quality episodes that Tennant got. She had a handful of stellar episodes like Demons of the Punjab and the Village of the Angels, but it's such a shame that even letdowns like the Kerblam episode were some of the better episodes of her run.

Prime Video is unnecessary and just another mountain of shit to pay for, but I'll give them props for that. Shinji, Misato, Asuka, Rei, Kaji, Gendo and the bridge characters all got to close out the series, from episode 1 of the anime to 3.0+1.0. I don't give a shit if y'all prefer the subs, that was cool as shit.

The conflict between pro-shippers and anti-shippers is a false dichotomy that makes a case for censorship, and it's weighted in favour of "anti-shipping" by colouring anyone who isn't 100% against pro-shipping as pedophiles, rapists and abusers. The issue being that even if you don't personally support topics like incest or age gap relationships but still heavily disagree with the inflammatory and heavy-handed way that anti-shippers make their case for censorship in fan spaces, you are still labelled as a danger to children and victims of sexual assault.

I have multiple reasons for being against anti-shippers, and post #102 highlights one of them - "coding". It's annoying because characters can be coded; a character might not have a diagnosis of autism or any other neurodivergence, but they can be neurodivergent-coded. Characters can be inferred to be queer while not outright confirmed - this was an issue for decades where many violent, rapey villains were also queer-coded, but it can also be a case where a queer artist like Oscar Wilde writes a character who's queer in the margins of their character, but isn't outright confirmed.

A pro-shipper arguing that a character below a certain height is "child-coded" is using the baseline of that analytical tool and using it to set strict boundaries for their dichotomy. This 26 year old character is 5'5'', therefore they present as a child, therefore people who portray them in a sexual light are adjacent to pedophiles and should be treated as such. A similar issue is with how "found family" has been twisted as a concept from "an unlikely band of comrades have banded together and become close and supportive of each other" to "a neat family dynamic that is analogous to adoption, where a 26 year old can't date a 32 year old because they see that older presence as a parent and it would be analogous to incest".

Coding is a valid analytical tool, and for what it's worth, You can see in fetishes like lolicon that characters can indeed be presented as an actual child and sexualised for the sake of people who are attracted to children. Setting an arbitrary height, under which a character is "minor-coded", isn't the same thing. It's a false dichotomy - above 5'7'' and below 5'7'', under which all characters are sorted as adults and child-adjacent - that rejects the whole of a character except an arbitrary factor that they deem to be problematic.

Here's another reason I'm critical of this rhetoric: teenagers in fandom. You'd think I'd be all in on "save the children from being corrupted" - and I do believe in proper tagging, age restrictions, things that keep adult and other distressing content away from people who shouldn't be reading it. But where this comes in as criticism of pro-shipping is when they paint certain ships as pedophilic for the characters being underage and dating each other, or if one of the characters is a year or two older than the other one.

The issue being, sometimes teenagers ship characters their own age. Sometimes they ship age gap relationships between a character they like and a character they're into, other times it's two characters around their age. And I have first-hand experience with this, because when I was 12, I shipped Aang and Katara from A:TLA. I saw people calling that pairing pedophilic, comparing shippers to pedophiles. Similarly, I saw people saying that Katara/Zuko shippers were abusive.

My point here is twofold. First, this pro-ship/anti-ship horseshit has been a part of fandom for years before the movement gained any sort of legitimacy through the use of those terms. Secondly, the "protection" of minors that pro-shippers preach is equally as likely to impact child/teenage members of fandom as it is to "protect" them. Again, it's a false dichotomy between abuse victim and abuse perpetrator, and what makes someone one or the other is how in-line they stay with the pro-shipper rhetoric. That includes children and people who have suffered abuse, who don't agree with the fanatical way pro-shippers go about this.

And finally, I want to highlight a history of censorship and mass-deletion of fan content due to its perceived "harm", because there are decades worth of digital stories that don't exist any more because they were taken down due to backlash or due to webhosts deleting mass swaths of content.

Livejournal - RP blogs and entire fanfic communities, including those which were properly tagged, disappeared overnight along with a ton of queer pages. Fanfiction.net had a history of shadow-purging content for years, even after they banned the MA classification for fanworks on that website and had a mass deletion spree. Usenet groups and old fanfiction websites whose servers were maintained financially by the dedicated fans who would host not only their own work, but the work of others - subject to DDOS attacks and having their ISPs restrict service to them, all along the grounds of morality and hostility between ships. This shit has been going for about as long as any of us have been alive.

And this is another shot at that. People want AO3 to remove stories they don't like, rather than use the extensive filtering tools that allow people to restrict fanworks they don't want to see. People have been decrying AO3 for asking for donations, and other people for donating to them, for years. There is a sustained and systemic push to restrict access to fan content that a fervent and unquenchable vocal minority have been pushing for decades, and this "pro/anti-shipper" dichotomy is only the latest iteration of it.

Personally, I find the fictional depiction of incest, rape and the sexualisation of minors to be unpalatable and distasteful at best, and actively unconscionable at worst. I'm a huge proponent against people who engage in lolicon content for example. However, I really dislike anti-shippers because they will stop at nothing not only to track down NSFW content - to the point of stalking someone and doxxing them to get access to as much of their lives as possible - but to decry anyone who engages with that content as a sexual predator. I find that to be particularly unhinged and delusional, and their fervour and willingness to conflate a person who wrote a dom/sub fanfic to a rapist will always be more out of this world than the person who wrote the BDSM story.

This isn't about protecting the innocent, it's about censorship.

In terms of a courtroom type show it becomes completely awful and stops trying to be that after like the first season. Every episode is just like 40 minutes of them screwing around and losing the case horribly then they give some long winded soap box speech about the state of society and win every time.

But if you do not care about accuracy at all it is pretty great. It is just an entertaining and fun to watch show. And even then it isn't very good except for James Spader who is just one of the best personalities in media ever in the perfect role for him. Which elevates the show to pretty great status just off that.

Don't get me wrong, season 3 has Alan Shore's sleaziness cranking up to unlikable levels and weird topics like incest coming up way too much. Season 3 is the nadir of the show and it never quite recovers. But season 4 introduces Katie Lloyd and her relationship with Jerry, and I think she saves the later half of the show.

After years of characters coming and going, Katie Lloyd was the perfect series regular to bring on full time. The first couple of seasons are better, but she is the best part of seasons 4 through 6. Though even saying that, the show is always capable of these great character moments.

Yeah. John's album Winter Wheat involved two of the other Weakerthans, but I still couldn't really sit through it. He did make a third and final Virtute song on that album though called Virtute at Rest.

I've come to the conclusion that whatever form a Weakerthans reunion would take would probably be pretty polarising, based on how different each of their albums are. It took me years to get into Reunion Tour - actual years. If they made a fifth album, I wonder if it would either try to call back to "classic" Weakerthans, or if it would build on the sound that came before it.

imo, the former would be a mistake because all four albums are so different and evolve so much, so to pander to a platonic ideal of what it means to be the Weakerthans would be a huge step back - but if they made a new album with a new sound going forward, I have no doubt it would be a tough nut for me to crack, if I ever get to the point that I enjoy it at all. I've learned to accept that the band is over, and I enjoy their music as-is.

Sure. I just think it would be nice if people were compassionate towards professionals doing their jobs and getting fair compensation for their work, instead of calling them selfish and lazy for it. With how many times it's happened, it feels like a backlash against voice actors - people wanting all the perks of their labor without having to deal with the hard stuff like fair pay and thinking about voicework as a job.

People are gonna have different opinions, but maybe some people should get a clue instead of just going "they just show up and say stuff!". It's pretty easy to not be a moron.

We saw it with John DiMaggio trying to get a union wage to portray Bender again, which everyone on that cast should be getting - instead, the narrative shifted to DiMaggio being selfish and "above" the rest of the cast, instead of the cast not being paid what they were worth. There was a post a while back about a VA getting underpaid thousands of dollars by Crunchyroll, and some clown said that they deserved it for being a dub VA. And now some of you clods are coming after the voice of Bayonetta for being offered a pittance of what she's worth.

VAs perform. It takes work, effort and talent to get a good voice performance. It is strenuous work when you're voicing a video game character, because it isn't just going "we gotta get the bubgus to the dungus!", it's cutscene dialogue and in-game dialogue, grunts and calls and taunts. There is more VA work than you maybe realise that goes into making a character like Bayonetta come to life.
