Calling is among my favorite vgm with vocals; especially for that section where i interpret the chords as being weird parallel motion stuff that deviates from the tonal center and sounds like shmup music (starting at :52) ((i dont think most people would interpret it as this, but it is how i hear it and i think it FEELS so cool because it sounds like all the songs i like that do that)). Overall the sound design and energy is stellar and i still never tire of listening to it. One of the tracks that last year got me most newly into {{{EDIT: UPDATE TO THIS advance vote calling writeup that was originally typed like 25 days ago by now. Apparently im typing this edit on the day of the actual match today by coincidence!? anyway I just have to say that i just heard in the car HERE I stand and face the rain by a-ha. In response to increasing frustration in the community regarding ties, going forward any match that ties more than once will have an extension to voting time in the third match by 24 hours. Voting will still be counted only in the original thread and not in a new days thread, however there should be some indication in the new thread that a match is still open.

I do know we had a differing situation in the rules post, but going back through convos with Tox I actually couldn't find any discussion as to why that was what we ended up putting there because I really, really don't like the unique voter total thing for some reason. So I'm thinking it was a placeholder, and I'd rather go with as announced here instead. Sorry for the confusion for those that remembered that from the initial announcement thread!!

Jfk cadence is one of the most steve reich archetype tunes this contest, more than a lot i might say that about. Probably because of the guitar reminding me a lot of lines right out of Electric Counterpoint for electric guitar or amplified acoustic guitar and tape (1987, for Pat Metheny)

I fell asleep some time in the middle of supper woods or mightve been phenylalanine even (i do not even think those songs are boring in the slightest i was just very sleepy..) and im back to rise woke me up ha ha. Pretty shockingly. Well back to relisten to all those i slept thru somehow i guess [commentary is transported back in time, NONLINEAR]

hello atolm dragon the first of TWO 10/10s that are in this contest for me..... (and the lower of the two at that...!!) this is like. literally perfect old console sequenced sample quality that is low enough and yet crisp enough to just make me feel the OOZE of sound with every single new note strike it's just next level... it is probably DEAD here but god i'm so glad it made it to contest lol i love this song to bits and have for a long time and thats why i recently decided its actually just a straight up 10 which despite me loving way too many songs, does not happen often!! (i think theres about 21 songs total, 17 of them vgm, that i'd give a 10)

Gahreesen corridors is...a contender for favorite video game song, i know i ranked all of my favorite songs so recently (and this wound up as 7th fav vgm, and 12th fav piece of music EVER), but things are all very close and tight there. Also more than ever im finding my taste is shifting and those shifts benefit this track particularly to the point i almost would rather this win the contest than rock castle(my current #1). Its weird how deeply embedded this is in my history, and it took this long for it to elevate this high for me. ive been a fan of this game (and this specific area (and this specific song for this area)) since i played this in ~2005, but im not sure i ever suspected that in 2022 i would STILL like it this much, even more than i did then, by magnitudes. Every sound in it is perfect to me, i love metallic timbres, i love slow background pitch bends, and theres a few other songs with an atmosphere akin to this that i really dig too...but nothing quite tops this at being exactly what this is to me. Its like ancient cistern on drugs. I like how it contains a perfectly dosed injection of the natural world too, into this otherwise furiously angular and metallic exterior for the exact balance i seek in this scenario. It is like theres a jungle outside that you can just barely see thru the thin slivers of window to the outside of this oppressive rotating ancient technology fortress (because there is). ((i really dig player0s description of my taste as being really centered around a desire for things that evoke ancient technology--that feels like the best summary of where i land broadly)). I tend to seek new experiences rather than the familiar when it comes to vgm. so for something with a lot of familiarity and repetition in my listening over time for me to STILL hold up, after all this time. Thats saying something about its power to me. Ive probably heard gahreesen corridors far more times than reach for the moon immortal smoke wishes i couldve heard it. And my appreciation for this track has only grown. There was a Kohls in this one place in the middle of nowhere rural michigan like over an hour away from where i actually lived but my family would like to shop there so i would begrudgingly follow along even though i did not like being in Kohls, but i made it more fun for myself because i decided whenever i was there that i would pretend that the Kohls building was the rotating fortress that this song (Hagreesen Corridors) plays in..it definitely made going to Kohls a lot more fun. . . it would be really neat if i could somehow convince some Kohls to play this song on the radio to fulfill my ultimate fantasy

Speaking of songs ive heard a lot of times...both here AND gamingforce. Electric power building was also in my list of top 50, more in like the ~40s, but thats still ridiculously high when you consider how much music exists in the world. It appeals for similar reasons to gahreesen corridors for me, but a bit more of sakimoto epic on top i suppose.

Ive only heard Pragmatism -Resurrection- (Arcaea) like 3 times, on the other hand.

Memoryfactory always makes me think of razerek, at..multiple levels of what that means

I will always remember threads of fate as the game i discovered from b8 stickam stream in 2009 and i had an uncharacteristically negative reaction to the music until i heard rasdan toward the end of the game (one of my favorite video game songs of all time) and then i went back and listened to the whole ost and was very confused how i ever had anything other than a 100% positive opinion of the entire ost every single track is so cool even the short looping tension ones(maybe especially those). Beautiful chords..long over-the-barline rhythmic containers. I love that 5+5+2 in the bass, but all the stuff floating on top is even cooler. I love the year 1997 (1999---i was close!!!)

I have talked about yggdrasil quite passionately recently; i dont think i need to say anything more that you cant read from the place that i did that. Currently i call it my 3rd favorite vgm song whichd make it my favorite track in the contest, but Gahreesen Corridors is actually rising and pushing it...it might be overtaking it soon if im not careful!

Atlantis spotted dolphin is one where i can say pat metheny group and it not being like a parody where im comparing totally absurd dissimilar things to it,,,this is very obviously supposed to be exactly that. But its not even the most overt pmg pastiche in the contest! Its only like..the third closest this year? I keep thinking this is going to turn into that fire emblem song nee made fun of in that wacky youtube video around 2:16 here

I love the groups of 5 in that saxophone..the most unexpectedly fitting layer to this landscape of other beautiful sounds

It took me a while to fully acclimate, but I would probably vote for its dangerous to go alone over the majority of things in this contest at this point, but unfortunately it is against yusnaan. Oh hey look; its the lyle mays synth lead!

Kusanagi village is an incredibly influential track on me. Its one of the first times i remember appreciating things where i interpret one tempo but it suddenly becomes solidified later as something different than what i initially felt. A feeling that sometimes i can only get on the first listen of a song; but its stayed with me forever with this one. I never hear the first half as 4/4 even though it is 4/4 just like the rest of the song. it feels more like ambiguous irrational stuff, or at least very loose. but despite being exactly the same tempo in the 2nd half, it feels rhythmically entirely different once all the other layers come in to recontextualize everything as having been just dotted eighths in 4/4 the whole time! its a vantage point shifting feeling that i listen to artists like virgil donati to experience to extremes these days, but when i first played okami i didnt know who that was so the idea of this was totally new!! Some other tracks i enjoy that i think this was definitely stepping stone toward appreciation of include: neotokyo - tin soldiers, neotokyo - welcome, planet x - alien hip hop, remidoki music - 4: room theme ii, charge cycles - transformer robot sing wheels on the bus, the list goes on. But this track is one of the first i can remember feeling the specific thing it made me feel. Also I like traditional japanese instruments, and the exact type of harmony present here is 1000% my thing. I would go on for pages about this one for sure if i were doing like actual real me-size writeups this year. Id been meaning to nominate this for literal years and it just kept always getting snubbed off my planned noms list, very happy to finally nom it and see it get into the contest after all this time!

Forest investigation was one of the most profound discoveries to me this contest. Chz is always introducing me to these cool dark proggy tense chiptune forest tracks, like that scurge;hive one by virt too. Slow pitch bends get to me so much

Hgollow knight music makes me imagine that i just ordered dennys to eat while playing the game as if this is as nostalgic memory from only a few years ago i did regularly. except this has never happened because i never played the game (well i did, but never got very far, certainly not enough for this to be a thing)

Songs like this make me wish i was a weeb instead of a furry. Well at least i have klonoa and uhhh, sonic shuffle

Im always surprised how much i actually dig this kirbys block ball song every time i listen. Its not the kind of thing i usually like, but the melody winds up being super emotional to me somehow
