pyresword 07/13/22 9:22:07 PM #104 | Yeah the Bankbuster substitution is definitely sketchier for that reason. I've been playing a very similar Grixis list and crewing the Bankbuster doesn't come up often though, at least. I almost always win either with Hullbreaker Horror or by using the Fable 3rd chapter to spam Wandering Mind tokens every turn --- I didn't do guru this year but azuarc can be in my sig anyways. |

pyresword 07/13/22 8:57:35 PM #98 | The list I'm envisioning wouldn't run Goldspan Dragon even with access to the entire cardpool. This is the type of thing I have in mind as a starting point https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/4896576. And yes you would definitely weaken the deck by skipping on lands, I'm only saying that in the scenario where you're pinched on wildcards but looking for anything that isn't a starter deck then it's maybe worth taking a 5% hit to winrate in order to save the 12 wildcards that would be needed to go with this manabase. (Disclaimer: I don't know what the starter decks look like and for all I know that is a better route to go) --- I didn't do guru this year but azuarc can be in my sig anyways. |

pyresword 07/13/22 10:20:10 AM #95 | Also I really do think you can build a pretty competitive Izzet Control deck for <10 rares. This won't be what you'll see if you look up lists online, but I think all you really need is 4x Fable, 2x Hullbreaker Horror, and maybe 1 rare board wipe. If you're playing a 2 color slow deck you can more realistically afford to cheat on the manabase (though there is still a cost to this), and you can replace some of the rare card-draw options with say Behold the Multiverse. --- I didn't do guru this year but azuarc can be in my sig anyways. |

pyresword 07/13/22 10:13:59 AM #94 | Peace___Frog posted... Somehow I have more mythic wilds than I do rares? pyresword 07/13/22 12:15:06 AM #90 | I don't think burn is quite there, is the problem. You could still try it and it's probably one of the better options if you just want as good a deck as possible with minimal wildcard use, but I don't know. There are aggro decks in the format like Boros and Mono-Green, but they all have a lot of rare creatures that they sort of rely on I think. Honestly I think the best bet as far as cheap but playable decks go would be some type of Blue/Red control shell. --- I didn't do guru this year but azuarc can be in my sig anyways. |

pyresword 07/10/22 9:51:50 PM #64 | U.N. Owen Was Her? Rock Castle Two Planets Approach the Roche Limit A song called Fetus of God and it's not from Binding of Isaac. Top 10 VGMC plot twists imo. The song unfortunately doesn't do a lot for me. It's going for this mix of cool and dark/creepy and it doesn't really feel like it nails either. U. N. Owen is one of the Touhou songs I actually like. Very cool melody. Gusty Garden Galaxy has never appealed to me; I just find it kind of boring overall, though the solo trumpet part is pretty cool. Rock Castle is a really interesting song with cool instruments. Sometimes there's a bit too much going on without a clear melodic direction and I'm not sure exactly how much I like it overall, but fortunately its opposition is weak enough that I don't really have to figure that out. Match 3 pretty cleanly has the best songs today. Like both of them a lot. Two Planets Approach the Roche Limit > Shard > U.N. pyresword 07/10/22 1:40:03 PM #67 | Been playing MTGA again after a several month hiatus. Standard is a lot of fun now, which is a refreshing change since the last time I played was before the Alrund's Epiphany ban. I suspect the format is very unsolved right now though. Seems like people have settled on Jeskai Hinata as the deck to beat, but it fundamentally just doesn't feel like a #1 deck to me. It is probably the one I've had the most success with though, so who knows maybe I'm just crazy. I've also been having a lot of fun with Grixis Control which feels solid but maybe not quite there. Explorer seems fun. Historic is probably still good, but they nerfed both of my decks and I don't feel especially incentivized to use more wildcards on another one that might be nerfed when the Arena economy is as garbage as it is. It's a shame though because I loved playing Arclight Phoenix in Historic. The deck is probably still decent but idk. Don't care enough about Alchemy to invest wildcards into it but I'll probably give it a try at some point, especially if there are going to be Opens/whatever that use the format. --- I didn't do guru this year but azuarc can be in my sig anyways. |

pyresword 07/06/22 8:47:57 PM #57 | Beyond the Bounds Theme of D4 Yoru ~ Sailing Beyond the Bounds does a lot I like a lot but also I really hate the talking/rapping/whatever vocal lines. This could honestly get a huge range of ratings from me on any given day depending on what part of the song I'm fixated on. Today I think it's solid. Shadoubt Shaps has cool sounds and atmosphere for sure, but something about the rhythmic construction makes it a bit hard for me to grab on to. I've always liked the pleasant sax melody in Theme of D4. The Ace Attorney song has a lot of personality and is generally good, but it feels like it's missing an extra melodic line to support the main melody or something, I don't know. I've been a bit down on her other pieces in the contest so far, but this one is peak Yoko Kanno. Yoru has the pretty vocals and very expressive flute, and the combination of guitar and violin/viola(?) in Sailing gets across the vibe of fantasy and adventure really well. I like Poets of the Fall, but this isn't my favorite song of there's, and even their best probably wouldn't be enough in this match anyway. Still an enjoyable song for sure though. Yoru ~ Sailing > Theme of D4 > Game is Afoot > Beyond the Bounds > Take Control > Shadoubt Slaps Good day. --- I didn't do guru this year but azuarc can be in my sig anyways. |

pyresword 07/03/22 8:30:17 PM #51 | Crocus we've got to believe in something Renata Glasc, The Chem-Baroness Love the relaxed, countryside vibe of Crocus. The transition to the different movements is sometimes a bit awkward but the piece overall is quite good. The overall vibe of Limitless Cinderella doesn't do a lot for me, but there's a few isolated woodwind lines that are really cool. They do a decent job dragging my opinion of the song up, but not enough for this particular match. Why'd you have to do Yuki Kajiura like this? Match 3 is evil. I go back and forth on liberatedliberator, but right now I feel it's a bit too on-the-nose compared to some of the other zts songs. Renata Glasc is great throughout. Love the variety of instruments and the diabolical-yet-sorrowful feel of the whole thing. League of Legends does a really good job painting pictures of their characters with the musical themes imo. Renata Glasc > Crocus > liberatedliberator > We've got to believe in something > Limitless Cinderella > Geometric Dance Good day. This is true but I don't think it really becomes apparent until the content for a hypothetical season 3 (which...god help the writers if they're ever tasked with handling that monstrously large plot thread in a condensed form). I think making cuts to the next arc or two is much trickier. I'm sure it's doable, but I don't have a particularly large amount of faith in it being done well. I'd be worried about them skimping on characterization of new characters when I think the right way to do it is to shorten up bits of the somewhat bloated climax. --- I didn't do guru this year but azuarc can be in my sig anyways. |

This looks better than the actual show to me and it isn't especially close. As for Tower of God, I'd love to see a season 2, especially because there's some parts of the next arc I think would really benefit from an anime adaptation, but I think the source material makes it a bit tricky. It feels like they would either need more than 12 episodes, which seems unlikely, or they would have to decide between having the next arc be rushed or unfinished. pyresword 07/02/22 6:45:30 PM #48 | The Final Smile To The Distant Sky Angel Rain Not into Secret Cave much at the start, but the middle is very exciting and the end has some cool piano and stuff. I can't say The Final Smile particularly stands out, but it is exactly the type of song that I love. Pretty, wistful, and echo-y vocals are 100% my jam, which I'm sure nobody could have guessed by looking at my votes today. This song never stood out to me much when I looked at it in passing, but actually listening to the whole thing it's really easy to get swept up in the song. Tenement of the Blue Spirit has the same issue I have with a lot of Caravan Stories songs where any individual section sounds pleasant, but the song as a whole just feels like jamming tense chords one after the other without rhyme or reason or sense of progression. I've been vocally critical of this soundtrack before but I just don't like it, at least based on what's been in these contests. To the Distant Sky is one of my favorite songs of all time and I'm going to be very sad if it's robbed in round 1 yet again. Angel Rain is very pretty overall, though it is actually held back a bit by the vocals. Overall I still like them, but I think I'd like the song a lot more if the vocals were a bit less breathy. Chrono Trigger generally has a good OST, but I've never been huge on Magus Battle in particular. I kind of like the one main melodic line but the song as a whole is just a bit underwhelming. pyresword 06/29/22 9:00:00 PM #55 | Team, This One's Stronger! Conviction Corridor NightL Dark Pit is fine. The guitar sounds good, but it feels like it's trying unsuccessfully to carry the entire song. The Bug Fables song is pretty fun. Confronter is chaotic but in a way I actually like. Really cool use of dissonance to create tension. Conviction Corridor I like a lot for reasons that are somewhat mysterious to me because it really doesn't do much, but the song just feels dark and energetic in a way that I really like. Xeno Arcadia has a very pleasant groove which reminds me a lot of Red Hot Chili Peppers, who are actually probably one of my favorite bands. Big fan. The Xenoblade song has a lot of really cool sounds--neat electronic things, driving violin, pretty flute, etc. The climax sections are also quite good, so really this just has everything I want. pyresword 06/25/22 5:12:19 PM #56 | Neko Nabe Mor Ardain ~ Roaming the Wastes CMYK (FM Arrange ver.) Neko Nabe can be kind of annoying at times, but the melody is catchy and there's some cool chord harmony things going on. I also like it a lot more later into the song. Possibly because of Stockholm Syndrome who knows. Another Winter however has never been a song that's made much of an impression on me. Tunnel Vision is pleasant but a bit too repetitive. I do like the sense of progression with the key change toward the end though. Mor Ardain is good-but-not-great Xenoblade battle(?) theme. Nice melody and strings and piano. The vocals in Blue Orb are okay but there's a lot I don't like about this song. The kind of abrupt note clipping that happens a lot in this song is a huge turnoff for me and I'm pretty much never going to vote for songs that utilize it. CYMK is a song, which is pretty much all that's needed to earn my vote. I actually like it quite a bit though. Very pleasant track that does a good job giving off relaxed and mysterious vibes.
