The carnage is over. A dolly shot pans gracefully over piles of burning rubble and the occasional human hand. Suddenly, footsteps - they get closer before the shot cuts to a blinking computer screen.

It's logged into the CE archival website. The audience sees a shadow lurch over it.

Then suddenly, a voice - as if it comes from a 60 year old man pretending to be a 12 year old:

"No-one wants to rate hot babes out of ten?"

The camera swishes around, and the face of an old man emerges from the shadows.

"Den I guess I'll do it myself."

I sympathize with the dad for sure. And I do think that losing a child like that is a truly cruel and fucked up experience to go through, and his suffering must be immeasurable.

With that being said - what people are saying in this thread about child endangerment is true.

In an ideal world, this wouldn't be something people feel the need to say after a child is killed. But in an ideal world, people wouldn't be leaving loaded firearms within arm's reach of a child. It is an unspeakable tragedy - which could have been prevented by securing the firearm properly, preventing the death of a child and the intense heartbreak of their parents.

And frankly, it shouldn't be legal to leave firearms unsecured. Period. Let alone in a household where you have a child. It feels distasteful to call for the punishment of a parent after their child dies, and of course people are going to call this political correctness gone mad and call attention to the political divide and all that shit. But since when was it acceptable to leave a loaded weapon within arm's reach of a child?

If the kid grabbed a fork and stuck it in an electrical socket, it would be an unimaginable tragedy. Negligence isn't out of the question, but even then, forks are so common in households due to their utility that it's totally understandable how a kid would get their hands on one and think to put it in a wall socket.

What utility does a loaded, unsecured gun have in a household with children? How was this allowed to happen in the first place? And as much as negligence is a factor when you look at a child sticking a fork in an electrical socket, is negligence not an acceptable factor to consider in a shooting death of a child?

My condolences to your coworker, and may he find some peace with himself in time. Again - I can't begin to imagine the guilt and sorrow he must be feeling over the death of his son. That's a pain that can easily last a lifetime. But for the love of fucking Christ, I can only hope that whoever made this preventable situation possible holds themselves accountable or is held accountable.

Ano Hana is a pretty sad show about fulfilling the last wish of a girl who died in the protagonist's youth. She comes back as a ghost that only he can see, and the show is basically him reuniting with his friend group who were torn apart by the ghost girl's death. It's a little overwrought, but the music is really good and I think if you're invested in the emotional journey of the main characters, you're really gonna like it.

DepreceV2 posted...
I know people will use this as an excuse to say digital is bad but
I'm gonna cut you off there because this is one really big reason why digital is bad, and Sony being the first big company to do it doesn't preclude anyone else from doing it. It's shitty that Sony is doing this, but this is in no way a "Sony problem".

This is a consequence stemming from game purchases shifting in favour of the companies that produce them. We buy a license, and the service provider has the right to pull their product, terminate the license and prevent the end consumer from accessing the licensed software for entirely arbitrary reasons. If Nintendo wanted to wipe Tetris 99 from the Nintendo Switch tomorrow on a whim, they could. Everyone who plays Tetris 99 would be powerless to stop them.

There is no "but". Yeah, Sony's been dogshit for years and this is a shitty stunt they're pulling. Microsoft and Nintendo could just as easily follow suit whenever they want, because the advent of digital purchases has given them the power to do that. Everything is a license - Final Fantasy 9 is licensed to all major storefronts from Square Enix, and when they don't want to provide the PS1 Classic or the barebones remaster any more, they can terminate their license with any video game publisher and take Final Fantasy 9 off of active storefronts. Even if you bought it, you can be restricted from playing a perfectly fine video game because a company - either the parent company that provides the software or the publisher who's the middleman between the production company and the end user - has decided not to renew their licenses.

That's not endemic to Sony. That is an inherent risk with any digital purchase. I mean shit, look at Warcraft 3: Reforged or the GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition - classic, untouched, perfectly fine versions of the original games were removed from digital storefronts to make the remasters the only legal way to play those games. This is absolutely a risk inherent to digital purchases as a whole, no buts about it.

Is that to say that I'm a total raving anti-digital loon? No - when a game goes on sale, I'll buy digital. It can be cheap and convenient. But I do so understanding the risk - that for any number of arbitrary reasons, some rich tech fucker will take their product away from me and make the money I spent null and void, because they have created an industry that gives them the power to do that.

"No-one else does this" - no, no-one else does this YET. Every game publisher, every development team, has the power to do this. And it's only a matter of time before licenses start expiring and everyone begins to lose access to the games they've paid for over the years.

On the other hand, I feel like this show is making my brain rot. I see people leaving comments under Boston Legal videos and like James Spader interviews saying that you can see parts of Raymond Reddington whenever he acts coy or whenever his other characters have a dark moment. Pretty much all of the fandom I've seen relating to this show has been really shallow and grating, and I'm worried that by going down the rabbit hole on this I'm gonna get more annoying and grating.

You can read that as Reddington being Liz's father and holding Agnes without her even knowing.

But Raymond Reddington is dead.

And so if you believe that Katarina Rostova took Reddington's place, that last line is so much more poignant. He probably would have loved to have met Agnes, and he would have loved Liz so much. But somewhere, somehow, Liz's mother is right there holding her granddaughter.

I just finished Adrian Shaw: Conclusion, partway through season 4. In this episode, Alexander Kirk - presumed to be Elizabeth Keen's biological father - escapes from hospital with Liz after learning she isn't related to him. In his mind, the test she received was doctored by Raymond Reddington, so he's gonna test her himself.

Turns out she really isn't related to him, but by then he's at a secure location with a person who means a significant deal to Reddington and - biologically - nothing to him. So he calls him up and offers him a choice: your life for hers. And Reddington accepts.

He gets there, Liz goes free, and Kirk goes straight for the truth syrum. Reddington is in a bad way, holding off the effects while he can, but he's slipping and the dosage is getting close to killing him. Eventually Kirk asks him if he's Liz's father, and Reddington asks him why it even matters. But eventually he relents, and he tells Kirk that Liz is his daughter.

Reddington has been cooking up a plot to save Kirk's life all season - he's shot, manipulated and finagled his way to an underground doctor named Adrian Shaw who has successfully been able to treat terminal illnesses with CRISPR. He bargains for his life with a woman who was successfully cured of Kirk's own terminal illness. But even then, Kirk can't accept a world where Raymond Reddington still exists. Reddington is going to die no matter what.

So Reddington asks him to talk about Katarina Rostova - Kirk's wife who left him for Reddington. The past few seasons has seen Reddington's judgement and conduct becoming clouded and tempestuous, and he says that he's forgotten what Katarina was even like. And Kirk obliges, recalling a memory where they were on a date and Katarina broke into the grounds of a house she'd always wanted to live in.

Reddington is filling in details Kirk either forgets or chooses to omit. And when he finishes his story, he tells Reddington that there's not a single thing he could say to stop Kirk from killing him. He sticks the needle into Reddington's neck...

And he grabs Kirk by the neck and whispers something in his ear.

The audience isn't shown what happens, but Reddington shows up alive and well after a period of time passes. He goes to see Liz, and he gets to hold Agnes. And Liz opines that she thought that Kirk was her real father and that she'd love for her father to be alive to see Agnes.

And Reddington answers that he'd love to be around to meet her.

So I'm sure you have two questions.

First, what is the Reddington theory I mentioned in the topic title?

Second, what does the above summary have to do with said theory?

This is where I start going into spoilers that go all the way up to season 8 of the show, so if you're not interested in being spoiled about the greater myth arc of the show, this is where you should stop reading.

The Reddington theory I'm talking about is the theory that the person portraying Raymond Reddington is actually Katarina Rostova - Elizabeth Keen's mother.

The evidence for this theory is as follows. Reddington, as morally ambiguous and shady as he always is, hasn't outright lied to Elizabeth Keen. He prefers to derail conversations and go off on unrelated tangents, and he treats it like a game. But he hasn't lied to Liz.

When she was a child, Liz witnessed her mother and father arguing. She got hold of a gun and killed her father. Her childhood home burned down and she ended up in the care of her adoptive father after having her memories tampered with. There were three parties involved: Liz's two parents and a mysterious third party. Reddington hid all this from her because in his mind, he is a "sin eater" - he absorbs the evil that Liz exudes to absolve her of her own crushing guilt.

The third party may or may not have been Mr. Kaplan. That leaves Reddington and Katarina Rostova.

In season six, it's revealed that Raymond Reddington is dead. His remains are located and tested. The person portraying Raymond Reddington isn't the original man. He presumably died in the house fire, or before that after Liz shot him.

The Raymond Reddington character we know in this show has burns on his back, presumably from the house fire. There's been hints of his connection to Liz, a connection that is clearly there but which he refuses to elaborate on. In this episode, under the effects of truth syrum, he admits that Liz is his daughter - but he doesn't say that he is Liz's father. And in season eight, the season finale apparently implies that he is actually Katarina Rostova.

So let's go over the facts.

As per the later seasons, Raymond Reddington is dead. The character portraying Reddington in the show isn't the original Raymond Reddington.

Alexander Kirk, Katarina's husband before Reddington spirited her away, hates Raymond Reddington with every ounce of his being. In his mind, Reddington took everything from him - his wife and his daughter, and all the happiness in his life. Even after being confronted with proof that Raymond Reddington can cure him of his terminal illness - of which he has weeks to live, if that - he chooses to stick a needle in his neck and kill the man. He outright says that there isn't a truth on Earth that could get him to spare Reddington's life.

When told a story about Katarina Rostova, Reddington is able to finish Kirk's recollection. This also fits in with a season 3 episode of the show where after Liz is seemingly killed, Reddington goes on an opium binge and hallucinates being with Katarina Rostova in an abandoned portside hotel. It could have been Reddington recounting his lost love, perhaps knowing aspects of her through his life with her, but as season 6 shows, the original Raymond Reddington is dead. Both episodes hint towards Katarina Rostova coming out of the woodwork, speaking through the alias of Raymond Reddington that she's adopted from whatever corner of her mind that she's been crammed into.

And after saying that Reddington is going to die no matter what he says, Reddington whispers something incredibly important in Kirk's ear. And after a period of time, Reddington shows up no worse for wear. A man who Kirk despises unlike anyone else on Earth, dead to rights with a syringe of deadly toxins in his neck and a finger on the plunger - alive and well. Based on something Reddington told Kirk at the very last second before being killed.

Reddington has burn scars on his back, possibly from the house fire where the original Raymond Reddington died.

If the truth syrum is to believed, Reddington admitted to being Liz's parent. He specifically avoided saying that he was her father, like Kirk was asking of him - he makes a point to say that "Elizabeth Keen is my daughter".

Watching this episode for the first time was a fucking rollercoaster ride, because I'm watching the show with this theory in mind. The truth syrum sequence was fucking amazing. When Reddington asked for Kirk to tell him about Katarina because he forgot what she was like, that killed me - he's gone down such a long and dark road that he forgets the kind, loving person he used to be. He forgets how to be Katarina Rostova. Whatever's left of her in him is almost completely gone. And he's face to face with his first husband, someone who saw the spark of life that Katarina used to have - and he asks him to tell him about her because he can't recall how she used to be.

And at the end of the episode, after Liz opines that she wishes her father was around to see his granddaughter, Reddington tells her that "He would have loved to meet her."

Poison is awesome. Every Rose has its Thorn can suck a dick BC I've heard it too much, but pretty much every other big single they put out is great.

There's this dumbass history-is-written-by-the-victors thing where it's like "disco flared out because it was tacky, repetitive and meaningless and rock survived because it was better, but then hair metal got popular and started killing rock before grunge happened and saved it". Hair metal was pretty good, and disco fucks so severely that it lasted a couple years longer in Europe and is currently making a massive comeback with Dua Lipa's recent music.

Dumbfuck chuds want the genres to have a bad name forever, but plenty of the music was awesome and I really like the sounds of both genres to this day.

"Evangelion is for adults"

Hahahahahahaha
A man gets graphically stabbed in the back, multiple civilians get executed on screen including a woman dragging a dead co-worker away from attacking soldiers before getting shot to death with an assault rifle, there are naked tits like five times during the movie and the world ends with all life on earth being reduced to primordial sludge, essentially killing all life on earth. End of Evangelion is not an all-ages anime.

Also, you're gonna lecture me on maturity when you made up a story about your cop brother getting shot and dying on the job?

The original dub and subs are part of the ultimate and limited editions of the new blu-ray, the basic blu-ray has the whole series and EoE with the netflix dub and sub.
Oh shit, that's actually pretty awesome.

If youre going physical media why would you get a DVD over a Blu Ray? Great movie though
afaik there is no English Bluray release of EoE. I also like the original dub cast of Evangelion, though the dub has some genuine flaws (like the cartoony goop explosion sound effects). I doubt they'd get the original dub back for a re-release, the closest they could hope for is for Amazon to redub the movie with the original cast like they did with the Rebuild movies.

It was $60.

For context, this is the first like "adult" anime thing I ever watched - and to that end, it was the first Evangelion thing I ever watched. I was 12, it was playing on a TV channel that aired foreign movies, and it basically ushered me into anime as a whole outside of the prerequisite Pokemon, Sailor Moon and Yu-Gi-Oh.

I didn't know what was going on or why it was happening, and I had no context or connection to the characters. But it meant a lot to me at the time because I was going through significant emotional issues, and this movie kind of spoke to what I was going through in a way that other media in my life just wasn't doing. I thought at the time that nothing could really convey how I was feeling, but this movie did. And as dumb and edgy as that sounds, I stand by that sentiment to this day. Like sure, I was an angsty 12 year old, but to this day I just have to celebrate End of Evangelion for being as fucked up and cathartic as it is.

I've been looking for this DVD for years. The price is steep, but when I saw it there in the flesh, it was a no-brainer. I had to get it.

If you're not a recovering/relapsing alcoholic, then sure.

And frankly after the poor luck I've had in my love life, I couldn't imagine getting romantically involved with a co-worker. If it went badly, which it tends to do, I would have to quit my job to get away from everything. If you can cope without going that far, good for you - but consider cooling it, or finding available women outside of the workplace.
