I can certainly respect that people consider X2 to be equal, but at the end of the day I can't agree. It walked back a handful of X's best and most subversive elements to better fit the Mega Man formula, and in my opinion it was a bit too easy. It felt like a step backwards.

I do like the hoverbikes though.

When I was younger, everyone was like "the offspring sucks but Self Esteem is a good song". It's funny how that's the one song that has arguably aged the worst in their catalogue. Seriously, Self Esteem sucks total ass and it's always sucked total ass.

My favorite Offspring song is The Kids Aren't Alright.

I've probably said this before, but the one neko case song I know and love is I Wish I Was The Moon. I love that song to an unreasonable degree. Hold On Hold On is okay, but it's not in the same league imo.

In other news, I've had two days of binge-drinking and I'm stopping now. I honestly shouldn't ever be around alcohol. I might have lost my wallet, I reached into my pocket and found my bank card and nothing else. I also dropped a $10 note on the ground. idk how much I spent or what I got up to.

You know that character trait in movies and TV and stuff where a character is borderline useless for 99% of what they do, but then a situation calls for something ridiculous while the much more competent characters are incapacitated and it turns out to be that incompetent person's secret hidden strength?

My hidden strength is listening to Counting Crows. I'd get the million hands down.

That's a really funny thought, but my assumption would be that it was a drunken vomit. It wasn't just a liquid stain, there was solid matter. Reminded me of the first time I vomited due to alcohol, it was at a friend's place and he gave me like dried dates to soak up the alcohol. It was the first night I ever blacked out, as well as the first time I ever puked on my bed.

It was just crusty, moist lumps of solid matter with that lactic smell that comes with spewing. If someone blew chunks with cock in their mouth, most of it would have gotten on the recipient of the blowjob. This was just full-force chunder, solid matter and all.

I actually got a picture of it. I'll get modded for sure if I post it, but I have one.

The past few weeks have been murder. The laundry I work at has a steam press for the sheets and pillowcases, and last week one of the modules broke - it's a side machine that slides the sheets up a chute for easier packing. That required a constant attendant running back and forth with one sheet at a time, and it slowed our operation to a crawl.

So we got that fixed, and we busted our asses all this week getting orders filled. And I mean we busted our fucking asses - we needed king sheets, then we needed queen sheets, and then we needed king sheets again. People weren't sorting them properly, it was chaos. I was running the washers and dryers solo, 8 hours a day, getting input and trying to stay on top of orders.

And then today, the steam press broke again! It has something to do with how the roller handles heat. So next week is gonna gonna be even worse. And on top of that, I'm on a five day work week - I'm grateful to have a job, I like what I do and I like my bosses, but fuck me if it isn't hard yakka. I need an extra day off to recover, but we just don't have the staff.

The one upside is the money. I know it's considered rude to talk about how much you earn, and it can come off as bragging and douchey, but for the work that I do - pushing carts, loading and unloading giant washing machines and dryers by hand, pushing carts of linen, sorting dirty sheets, folding sheets etc. - I'm making about $800 a week after tax.

Today, a coworker uncovered a sheet that someone had puked in. The motel staff had just taken the sheet, bundled it up and stuffed it in a bag for us to deal with, and it had been sitting for days before we picked it up. It may have been sitting for days before we even got to it, because when we opened the sheets, the puke was beginning to go moldy. The other guy didn't know what it was, but in my younger days I puked a lot bc of all the alcohol, so I was able to detect that pungent smell of bile among the rest of the rotting vomit smell.

So tonight, I'm going to enjoy a drink :)

TopicNew Disney movie Turning Red talks about periods? Whoa
MrMallard
03/17/22 8:21:56 AM
#112
Girls get periods around the onset of puberty, which tends to manifest anywhere between ten and fifteen depending on the person. That's a reality that girls have to contend with at a young age, and people have the audacity to say it's perverse, obscene, sexual and inappropriate to discuss with kids.

I've been listening to a pretty leftie podcast lately, and one thing the host talks about is how news is framed - one example being how the news uses "controversial". Controversial to who? In this case, this movie is controversial with an audience who see periods as obscene and sexual in nature.

Y'know, something that affects the sheer, sheer majority of the world's women. Half of our population - over half of our population, at least as far as birth rates and life expectancy goes. Something that some women have been made to feel shame about, sure - something we don't talk about because it's been deemed shameful.

But where does that shame come from?

My money's on the people who don't experience it, who view it as alien and gross because of their lack of proximity to it. People who tend to be men, who are used to choking down bland horseshit regurgitated through a game of telephone through which nuggets of "conventional wisdom" dictate the outcome - nuggets of biased information that plays to a warped sense of how the world really is for the sole purpose of pacifying a fragile and ignorant type of person.

This movie normalising discussions about menstruation - giving it levity through characters who not only know about it and discuss it and are supportive of each other over it, but who joke about it? Net positive for the world. This entire furore is only controversial to the most out of touch, self-centred idiots who spend their entire lives coddled away from the reality that girls as young as ten have the lining of their uterus expelled from their bodies painfully, causing bloody discharge out of their vaginas, necessitating the use of pads, tampons and other menstrual aids to grant them the ability to partake in the world at large. That's reality. That's something that people go through during their lives, and it happens for decades.

To assert that not only do girls menstruate, but that it's a natural process that they experience throughout their lives and that they joke about and support each other about, this Turning Red movie has whipped up a firestorm of dumb, hysterical fucks. It's not a radical concept. It happens every day. Your sisters, your mothers and your daughters have menstruated in the past and present, or they'll menstruate in the future.

Literally the only thing that makes this controversial or radical in any way is that we don't talk about menstuation enough. But wait a second - we can't. Because it's sexual and obscene, and that poses a threat to the psychology of our children. Even the ones that are going to menstruate over the course of their lives, or who have already begun to do so.

This isn't a controversy. This is an entitled tantrum from people as far removed from the topic as possible. It reeks of ignorance and entitlement, and the backlash to it tells a pretty damning story of the people who are so vocally and virulently against it.

So as I was watching the show tonight, it hit me that season two has been better than season one so far. I binged the first half of the first season, then I slowed down on the second half because a clear formula was manifesting, and then the first half of season 2 had me leery about what direction it was going. But now I'm invested again.

There's a decent mix of throwaway villains of the week and really solid, iconic Blacklisters like Luther Braxton, the Mombasa cartel and the King family. And the character work they're doing for Tom Keen is phenomenal. Very leery about the fact that they're making him into an American History X-like neo-nazi character, because they're very much playing up the power he has and his competency in regards to committing violence - and the thing about media like American History X, despite its intent to be anti-fascist, is that the power fantasy and the image of being a neo-nazi - powerful and violent - is often cited as a gateway into which other white supremacists and neo-nazis find the lifestyle and choose to engage in it. So to see the character get neo-nazi tattoos and commit assassinations for a fascist, and to see the way it's framed - Ryan Eggold is an attractive fucking man, especially when he's a confident, assertive villain, and it shows when he's posed over a chair with a smoke in his hand - it weirds me out, and it feels misguided and edgy in a way that people could draw from in a radical way.

And yet, the character of Tom Keen is so compelling. And I know he's gonna be coming back in a big way, there's an episode this season in which he's a Blacklister. And despite my mixed feelings on the Nazi angle, the character himself has been a highlight of the season. Apologies for the tangent.

It's surprising. I hit a low point with this show, and it's picking up again.

Except the fact that it just had a CLIP SHOW STORYLINE in SEASON TWO.

Just finished the Deer Hunter episode. I thought it was gonna be a transgender villain, pretty happy they didn't go that way. But the episode plays into the "Reddington is Keen's mother" theory.

The episode starts with a squabble between Reddington and Keen over whether the Deer Hunter is a man or a woman. Reddington says that men prefer to get up close and personal, and that women tend to attack from afar with weapons like guns or - in this case - a crossbow. And what we've seen of Reddington so far tracks with that. He punches when he needs to, he pounded a guy in the face in the Luthor Braxton two-parter. But in season one, he's actually pretty frail. In the Madelline Pratt episode where he does the camp gay thing, he also goes in for a punch and hurts his hand. Most of his kills are by gunshot, like Berlin - though Anslo Garrick was a physical kill, and he suffocated the other guy at the end of the next episode. So maybe my theory here is full of holes.

But when the episode ends, both Reddington and Keen make up over the fact that together, they were both right. The Deer Hunter was both a man and a woman - an abusive husband and his wife who took up his work as a way of exerting power over abusive men.

And as the episode ends, the camera pans over Reddington's shoulder, and it lingers.

Here's my assumption based on the end of Luther Braxton.

Keen's mother shot the original Reddington that Christmas Eve in order to get the Fulcrum, or whatever exponentially more dangerous secret gets introduced in later seasons. However, with Reddington dead, she chose to assume the title of Reddington and fashion a new life of crime under his name to keep his loose ends under her thumb and to hide from whatever malevolent force she was working for. To that end, she had a body double put in place for her old identity, and she killed the original Reddington on Christmas Eve 1990.

Basically, the shadowy conman act we've been seeing stems moreso from Katarina than it does from Reddington. It's only under her assumption of the Raymond Reddington identity that the true evil of the alias has taken place - or perhaps on top of her own agenda, her assumption of the Reddington identity involves warding off an apocalyptic event that the original Reddington was working towards.

TopicAre Zack Snyder fanboys the worst in all of cinema?
MrMallard
03/15/22 5:48:47 PM
#13
Apparently Zack Snyder is a pretty okay guy. But as far as his fans go, the only time I've gotten a death threat on the internet was after criticizing Man of Steel as a pretentious, edgy, overlong movie that misses the point of Superman.

I also remember when there were users on this board saying that Civil War was worse than BvS, or at least as bad as BvS. And then there was the conspiracy theory that Disney was paying off reviewers, and people started a petition to make Rotten Tomatoes "objective" (i.e. to stop them from giving DC movies of the time the dogshit scores that they deserved), despite RT being owned by Warner Bros - DC's parent company.

And more than anything, I feel like the fanaticism of DC fanboys has stemmed from this single-minded brainrot that DC vs. Marvel is the most iconic fanboy ideological clash, at least in the west. Nerds have traditionally picked either Marvel superheroes or DC superheroes, at least as far as conventional wisdom goes bc I'm sure there have always been people who read both. So when Marvel movies started to get good, and DC's offerings were crap like Suicide Squad - after The Dark Knight was a critical and commercial success, after a superhero movie had actually achieved some degree of cinema? You had every argumentative moron coming out of the woodwork to continue The Great Fanboy Argument, for no other reason but to show allegiance to a brand for clout.

DC movies got better, Marvel movies are usually fine. But even back then, the argument that DC/Snyder movies were better was rooted in a bunch of brand warfare bullshit, just like game consoles. I have a low opinion of Zack Snyder fans for how argumentative and aggressive they were in general, let alone how they tried to talk up movies that weren't great and didn't set a particularly high benchmark for what seemed like the point of petty conflict. Again, the one time someone online has sent me death threats was after I criticized Man of Steel. In my opinion, ZS fanboys are absolutely the worst fanboys in cinema - at least from my perspective. The only thing worse at this point would be a Woody Allen/Roman Polanski fanboy who said that neither director did anything wrong.

I've had intense crushes about four times in my life. I always get infatuated with someone who's way out of my league, I struggle with not being good enough, I get insanely jealous and self-destructive and then I tend to burn bridges because I debase myself in some way that alienates them. The latter part doesn't happen every time, but it's happened twice out of those four times.

I was listening to a Mountain Goats song from a radio session they did, and the lead singer was talking about the last two tracks on one of his albums. The context was abuse, and he was asked about how the songs seem to come back around to loving your parents even if you have awful parents.

And the lead singer discusses what he phrases as the legacy of the romantic poets, where love is this beautiful benevolent thing that's accompanied by strings, and if something bad happens, that's not love. Though as an abuse survivor and as someone who's worked in therapy in the past, he sees that as a legacy that's done damage to people, because they can't comprehend why someone who they love and who loves them back would hurt them. Did they never really love you to begin with?

As a counterpoint, he brings up how the ancient Greeks saw love - as a burning, all-consuming force that can and will destroy a lot of things to get to its own objective, which is the expression of itself. A lot of ugliness comes from love. That's how you get crimes of passion, or anger born of worry. That's how you get jealousy, even to the point of destroying the relationship with the person you love so much. It is such an overwhelming force of nature, and to become recognised, it will twist you into shapes you never wanted to be and it will prey on the most ugly parts of yourself.

And yet, love itself is a neutral force with the potential to manifest in a number of ways, for the sole purpose of being acknowledged and expressed. For all of the affection and fulfillment you feel under the effects of infatuation, jealousy and pain are right around the corner as their counterpoints, and they're fed by the same source. And everybody diffuses that force in different ways, whether they be incredibly positive and productive or incredibly unhealthy and destructive.

Love in itself is a neutral force with a lot of destructive capabilities. In my case, it shreds me inside and ruins my life for months at a time, and I either end relationships to avoid outright ruining them or all of my crazy comes out like a faucet and I end up hurting everyone around me. It's a pattern. That's why the Greek interpretation of love makes more sense to me than the Romantic ideals of love.

So I've been in love, sure. It fucks my entire life and leaves me with nothing, so I sure wish I hadn't been.

The end of the Front is pretty poignant given the theory. It has Red playing a song about a parent and daughter set to Liz thinking about a baby, Amir waiting for Samar to wake up and Teddington tracking down who - at this point - is alleged to be his daughter.
