Can you, and/or do you?

Note to mods: I'm talking about medicine, not recreational drugs. I just took some osteo paracetamol because my ankles and back always hurt after I get home from work. I was wondering if anyone prefers to take tablets without water.

Also, I'm not talking about capsules. I'm talking about pressed pills, the kind you could chomp if you wanted to (but literally why would you want to). If you can dry-swallow capsules, you're a better CErson than I.

TopicDescribe Evangelion.
MrMallard
04/03/22 3:26:05 AM
#16
Evangelion's central theme seems to be alienation, with the three children exhibiting three different approaches to trauma and hardship in their lives.

Shinji is avoidant - he escapes when he can't handle what's happening around him, and he's often forced into a lead role where he has to take the reins and get results. When the getting's good, he gets praised and he gets a fat head. When the getting's bad, he withdraws and tries to escape through any means necessary. He has a desire to control how he's treated which is a desire that often fails him, and the failure of that often leads him to more hardship and trauma. As such, he would rather leave the system that causes him so much pain.

Rei is receptive. Despite her fundamental disconnect to the world around her, she hyperfocuses on the one task that's given to her to the point that she considers it her sole reason to live. The only way she can exist is within the system that gives her any meaning - outside of that purpose, she doesn't think she should exist anywhere else, because there is nowhere else for her to exist. She is fundamentally tied to the system that she is alienated from, and without it, she would die.

Asuka is confrontational. Her alienation is rooted in her sense of superiority, as if the whole world is hers for the taking. It makes her feel weak and unwanted, but rather than run away or conform, she challenges what's in front of her in order to bend it to her whim. The only way she's going to get out of this shit alive is if she takes her position at the head of the pack - her birthright. Because if she isn't the head of the pack, everything has been for nothing and there's no point in her being alive.

So we have three different approaches to alienation. Shinji wants to escape - he has no desire to live in the system that makes him feel alone and hurt. Rei wants to conform, because conformity is the only way she'll ever survive. Asuka wants to take control because all of the suffering she's endured will be for nothing if she doesn't use her pedigree to get what she wants.

In a sense, this is the fight-flight-freeze-fawn survival instinct. Asuka is fight, Shinji is flight and Rei is fawn.

The way the show approaches the topic of alienation is through the familiar lens of giant monster battles and mecha. Shinji is made to take point and defeat threats to earth's existence, with his first two wins being at the behest of a higher power wresting control from him and due to a frantic suicide charge, respectively. Control is never truly his to begin with, and he often doesn't feel equipped to shoulder the responsibility that control gives him. This is emphasised in the way that his wins don't always work out. People die. People denigrate him and other people save the day because he can't. He is occasionally capable, but he doesn't have the stomach for it and he walks a fine line between success and failure.

Some people recognise his pain and try to help him come out of his shell and cope with the hand he's been given. Others treat him like dirt because he represents everything about themselves that they don't want to exist. And his own father sees him as nothing other than a pawn to expand his machinations against the human race.

Fundamentally, the show is about fighting alien threats and coping with severe trauma. Beyond that, the conflict of the wider world is often juxtaposed between the conflict of the inner world of the main characters. The focus on how those three characters survive is equal to how the world itself survives against the Angels, and both are tied by fate.

So if the world keeps getting attacked and destroyed - if the state of the world is constantly trashed with no hope of rebuilding any of it due to the constant threat of attack - how must the lives of our protagonists be reflecting that?

That's what the show is about. How three different personalities cope with the destruction of their lives and the trauma that results.

Super Smash Bros Ultimate has 109mb worth of save data. I never really.liked Smash Ultimate - I don't think I like Smash at all, to tell you the truth. It's gonna be the last save file I delete today.

I went from 6.2gb to 7.9gb just by deleting unwanted save data.

PSA, if you've ever played a demo where the save data can carry over to the full game, you're probably holding onto around 64mb of hard drive space. Especially if you didn't like the demo and have no plans to get the full game.

I just deleted Crystal Chronicles save data that was 64mb. Dragon Quest Builders has a 163mb save file, and I barely played it back in 2018.

Have you thought about replacing the SD slot? My son's Switch wouldn't hold the card SD in place. So, I looked into it and found that it was a cheap and easy fix. I picked up a replacement part on Amazon for like $15. Swapping the parts took about 10-15 minutes.
Honestly, I was thinking about getting a Switch OLED by trading in my original model. I'll have to look into this, I have a 128gb microSD card ready to go.

Some games that I never wanna play again have hundreds of megabytes worth of save data. Minecraft has 1.5 gigabytes of it.

I wanna eventually buy the Borderlands games, but 2 and the Pre-Sequel are digital only and my SD card slot is broken. I have a base model, so I've decided to go through and get rid of some old crap I'm not gonna play again - most of it is backed up on the cloud anyway.

GameFAQs is one of the most toxic places I've ever spent time. The PS4 board is terrible, and the Nintendo Switch board is full of assholes trolling about Nintendo and insufferable jerkoffs taking the bait and firing back every time. Similar issue with CE, where the most inflammatory fuck will drop the most obvious bait and the same crowd of do-gooders will take it upon themselves to debate it and debunk it when the only reason the TC posted it was to get them hooked in so they can string them along with even worse bullshit.

I've been one of those people, and I'll occasionally bite to work off some stress, but I swear every time someone dangles the stupidest fucking carrot in front of the community - something not even worth acknowledging the existence of, because there's zero good-faith interpretation of what's being said - the same group of people give it all the attention it was looking for in the first place. I genuinely kinda hate it here.

With that being said, OSRS is a good choice. I remember when Jagex added a gay pride event, and people revolted by dressing up in white robes so they'd look like the KKK and massed in Falador to protest.

TopicIs there a decent argument against legalizing marijuana?
MrMallard
04/01/22 12:24:00 AM

As long as alcohol is as widely available and accepted as it is, I don't see an argument against pot that's valid.

I'm critical of pot in that I do think that sustained marijuana use impairs brain function and/or motor function - the latter more than the former imo. People who are all in on pot like to say that there's no downsides to it, that there's no chance of cancer and it doesn't impair you in any way once you've sobered up, and I can't agree with that; I simply don't believe it. I've grown up around too many old stoners who drawl and drag their speech out. You can hear the difference in how someone like Kevin Smith spoke before he smoked and how he spoke after years of smoking.

But is that a justifiable position to say that marijuana should be a prohibited substance? In my opinion, no. In a world where we normalise smoking and alcohol, where those substances are taxed and regulated, there's absolutely room at the table for pot. We talk about drugs as if a green leaf is as potent as synthetic, crystallized methamphetamine, and it comes from a very puritan, all-or-nothing perspective that doesn't reflect the reality of the world that we live in.

Legalising pot wipes out a black market. Some people will trade in illegal pot, like people trade in illegal tobacco or moonshine today. But you're looking at 95% or more of a black market, gone overnight. You've got a less dangerous and less potent buzz than alcohol. You've got a product that needs to be refined less and produces less waste than other substances. Given that it's isolated to a handful of acceptable zones, ala smoking and drinking, marijuana is fine.

Any recreational substance has baggage, pot is no exception. But its baggage falls right in line with what we've already deemed acceptable to legalise. I simply don't see a downside that justifies criminalisation

People stopped taking her and Pam Anderson seriously the moment they came out as absolute nutjobs. Jim should have nothing to worry about.
The thing is that Jim Carrey was not only with Jenny McCarthy when she was coming to the forefront as an absolute nutjob, but he attended her antivax rallies with her:

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/4/4/0/AAbh80AADFX4.jpg

Said rally was sponsored by a group called "Talk About Curing Autism", or TACA.

And granted, he looks pretty uncomfortable in that picture. But the thing is, he's an anti-mandate kind of guy. Apparently in regards to the COVID vaccine, he's defined his position as "pro-vaccine, but anti-neurotoxin". Back in 2015, he had a Twitter rant about the California governor requiring all school-aged children to be fully vaccinated.

The whole thing about the "Green our Vaccines" movement was that they wanted to clear out what the movement saw as poisonous preservatives, as chemical ingredients that triggered autism in non-autistic children.

As recently as 2015, Jim Carrey was full whackadoo anti-vaxxer. Today, he's trepidatious about vaccines to the effect that he quantified his position as pro-vaccine, but anti-neurotoxin. The idea that vaccines contain neurotoxins and shit is one of the cornerstones of the anti-vax movement - it's the biggest sticking point, the big "gotcha", that anti-vaxxers use to persuade people into hearing them out.

At least from what I'm seeing, Jim Carrey is the Mitt Romney to the current anti-vax movement's Marjorie Greene Taylor. But Jim Carrey was there when this anti-vax shit was heating up, attending rallies with his nutjob anti-vaxxer wife, and he still seems to hold some of it as personal belief. That's why I brought him up.

All to say - he can be as sickened as he wants, he can act as if the Will Smith thing is a senseless show of violence that shocks the moral fibre of the nation. But he'll always be there on the ground floor of the anti-vax movement. The pictures still exist, and the movement has left a lasting impression on him - and that affects his public image and his legacy at least as much as this slap business affects Will Smith.

TL;dr glass houses, stones etc. Plenty of people would say that what Jim Carrey furthered is a much bigger evil than what Will Smith did. The stink of clueless celebrity crazy is on everyone who's become detached from the everyday civilian experience, and Jim Carrey is one of the biggest offenders.

I first visited because I was rebooting all my social media and shit, I wanted to like rank games and use the site for archival purposes and make reviews and shit. That didn't last long.

Then the Best Game Ever poll happened and Undertale fans kept driving it to the top. It was fucking hilarious, so I kept dropping in to see how people on CE were reacting. I think I trolled a bunch, but by the time I came in everyone just sort of accepted that Undertale was gonna win and it wasn't any fun. The fact that people are still upset about it, though, makes it an evergreen source of comedy.

Then I had a crisis of faith. I had been a big Tumblr leftie, I'd seen the social justice side of the website from the inside, and stuff was happening in that sphere of influence as well as with a person I knew that was really getting to me mentally. So I disengaged and came here to shitpost - got moderated right away for saying some dumb, uncouth shit.

And funnily, it was posting here and seeing how some people actually had shit for brains in the way they advocated for conservative causes that made me a more dedicated leftist, because it let me actually find the words to sum up my disagreement with what they were saying and define the values that I held true and wanted to live by. So GameFAQs was really helpful in that regard.

I really enjoyed Cougar Bourbon back in the day. Sweet taste, kinda reminded me of the smell of crushed ants but in a good way. Very tasty bourbon.

Never really liked Maker's Mark. Jim Beam and Jack Daniels might as well be the same thing as far as I'm concerned, they're both big brand-name dark liquors that inspire rabid fanaticism in the people who drink them. Jack Daniels moreso, but it all blends together.

There was a honey whiskey that wasn't American Honey or Jack Daniels, it was like a generic name like Tennessee. That was really good. And this was nearly 10 years ago now and they discontinued it ages ago, but there was a cheap $30 bottle of rum called Buckeye - the regular one was trash, but the spiced rum was fantastic for the price point. Made you feel congested as shit, probably had all sorts of shitty additives, but it was delicious and cheap.

John Wayne had to be held back by six security guards to stop him from hitting a Native American woman.

They gave Oscars to Roman Polanski after he raped a young teenager and fled the country to avoid prosecution, and to Woody Allen after his creepy history with young girls came to light.

I've said before that I empathize with Will Smith for what he did, but even if I didn't, I don't think he should be expelled. If they won't kick a person out after molesting and raping a 13 year old and fleeing the country to avoid being arrested, it hardly seems fair to expell Will Smith for slapping someone for making light of his wife's medical condition.

Argue about how appropriate of a response it was, by all means. But was it such an egregious and unacceptable occurrence in the history of this institution that it warrants an expulsion? I genuinely don't think so, and the expulsion of Will Smith will go down as a pointless and arbitrary endeavour.

People have been arguing whether he's been going through mental decline or just really ramped up on his prima donna behavior for the sake of raking in as much cash as possible. It's easy to paint all of his direct-to-VOD movies as like mindless paychecks, a Hollywood great reducing himself to easy money and garbage films, but it's not a stretch to see his diminishing performances and wonder if there's something wrong with him.

Unfortunately, he isn't being lazy or selfish as per his reputation. It turns out he is sick. I wonder if he turned to the Steven Seagal school of filmmaking to make sure his family will be well looked after when he's gone.

Something happens to Inside Gaming, leading to the creation of Funhaus.

Funhaus gets added to Rooster Teeth.

AOL, Rooster Teeth's parent company, acquires Inside Gaming - letting the Funhaus games do their show again after years of doing Funhaus.

Because AOL owns both Inside Gaming and Funhaus, the team are made to produce content for both.

The same soulless corporate culture that began to suck the soul out of RT sets in as the Funhaus/Inside Gaming crew are made employees of their own IP as mandated by a parent company.

Bruce Greene leaves to pursue streaming, seemingly to his benefit because he can do what he wants, when he wants.

Lawrence leaves soon after and becomes outspoken about how shitty that environment got.

Alanah Pierce, herself a newer recruit in the long run, gets a job at Santa Monica Studios.

Adam gets caught up sexting with teenage fans, leaving the company in shame alongside that Ryan Greenwood guy.

The married couple are the only original cast left, surrounded by the other characters they picked up along the way.

A dead black man was good enough for his face and posthumous legacy to be owned and traded for monetary value, but he wasn't good enough to win an actual award. And because he's dead and there's no more Chadwick Boseman movies coming out ever again, that was the last chance for him to win an Oscar.

Even in death, it would have been a great gesture to commemorate his work.

But they turned him into currency.

It's not a new strategy. They try it every once in a while.

"Hello fellow people, say wouldn't it be much better if we were to separate the T and Q+ from the LGB? That way we can better focus on trans right!"

Divide and conquer.
Absolutely. This has happened with bisexual people, asexual people and transgender people, and I've also been feeling a big push against non-binary presentation - especially against AMABs or people who want to be more masculine to further blur the line between gender.

I follow a webcomic artist who went from fem-presenting to explicitly non-binary with minor facial hair, and people were asking them not to change because they were gender goals or because they'd miss them. Like they weren't gonna stop making the comic, people were just upset about their re-evaluation of their gender to the point that it felt like they'd be losing a person by them changing. And they were saying it directly to this person in an effort to change their mind.

Another personality I follow went from portraying a feminine persona with a feminine name to adopting a more masculine name and taking on less fem presentation - explicitly updating their pronouns to he/them - and people dragged up tweets from years before when they did identify as trans to "discredit" their more recent non-binary identification.

And to expand on the bi, ace and trans thing - all three identities have been characterised as predators or invaders, as well as people whose open identification hurts other queer people just by existing (bi people simultaneously being able to dump gay partners for straight ones and supposedly being bigoted towards trans people by not identifying as pan, ace people for "co-opting" the queer struggle for something that supposedly doesn't harm them due to being able to "pass" in cishet society, and trans people for "preying on lesbians" and making it harder for queer people to assimilate) who subsequently - according to those who say this shit - shouldn't be a part of the community. And it's happening to non-binary people too.

And the worst part is that the people who do this exclusionist bullshit either don't realise that they're falling in with the conservative fucks who'd like to see their own queerness get stomped out of the public eye, or they do realise and they side with it anyway by reasoning that they'll be both safe and powerful if they side with the bigots. Look at how TERFs are devolving into like phrenology and bone structure to define who is a man and who is a woman, as well as defining men as deviant abusers and women as righteous victims as a way of shielding blame from the harm that they're doing to other people. Like they're sharing a house with tradwives and channers to own the libs. Look at how gay people have vilified bisexual people for the "psychological torture" of being dumped for an opposite sex partner, or how they've besmirched openly queer people for making it harder for them to assimilate into heteronormative society.

And the fact that I'm here right now, talking shit about other queer identities and my grievances with them, plays into that. It's a negative feedback loop, breeding more animosity and conflict between different identities to take some of the heat away from the people who are actually trying to force us back into the closet. Political lobbyists, corporations like Toyota who bankroll conservative election campaigns, people who pass laws that impact us for a taste of that filthy lucre. People who march alongside confederate and swastika flags chanting "blood and soil", elected officials telling Jewish constituents that "work will set you free", people who unironically threw an arm up in salute of a conservative president at the behest of a known neo-nazi.

And it's because people in the queer community are used to animosity, in having to drive out bad faith actors. Right wingers just consolidate where the most passionate people are, and it tends to drive their party line further and further right because the most passionate people they can court tend to be totally buttfuck insane about some stupid shit that doesn't mean shit to anyone.

So what happens when you weaponize a leftie's desire to drive people out, to identify a group that goes against their interests as a group, by saying that another group with a common cause is actually a bully who wants to rob them of who they are? And what happens when their desire to be safe outstrips their ability to discern whether a person or group of people legitimately mean them harm?

Then you get TERFs. People who'll go to the grave saying they're protecting the queer community from rapists, murderers and pedophiles, only for their legacy to amount to the ostracization of their own sex for looking too "mannish".

Does Blinding Lights still fuck hard?

For me, the TV ads have really affected the way I see the song, but every now and again I'll put the music video on YouTube and crank my headphones up past the safe listening level and it's just as good as I remember.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

Yes, we as a progressive society - because we do see more open support of queerness today than in prior decades. And yet despite that support and acceptance, the government keeps passing more and more reactionary anti-LGBT laws that criminalize queerness or legalize the ability to discriminate.

You can have a thousand Floridian schoolchildren protest the "Don't Say Gay" bill at their school, but the fact is that the law exists, a person and a faction they represent lobbied for it and introduced it into law, and it punishes people by equating the proliferation and open support of queerness to child abuse. There are people, companies, organizations and political lobbyists spending a great amount of time, effort and money to legally shove as many queer people back into the closet as possible despite that public support - especially among the younger generation.

If we as a progressive society are winning, then who's making it possible to separate parents from their children over the supposed queer agenda? And if we as a progressive society are in the right, and things will only get better from here - then are the people legislating queerness away and prosecuting people for "liberal brainwashing" the enemy of the people?

All this shit does is show us that whatever gains the queer community have gotten - whatever the community has "won" - can just as easily be taken away because an oligarch agrees with a car company and a conservative lobbying effort that acceptance of LGBTQIA+ identities is tantamount to child abuse. That's not progressive society winning, that's the will of the people being legislated away by someone with time, money and influence to enforce their own bigoted agenda. It's an attack, and placating people with "public acceptance is still high!" doesn't address the problem.

Garnet, hands down.

Yuna has resolve and a willingness to fight for her ideals, but I don't think she'd find a fight with Garnet to serve her ideals. She'd want to avoid conflict if at all possible if she sees no sense in it, which both X games cover as a core facet of her character.

Garnet? She would scrap to survive, hands down.

The music choices in this show have been pretty good. I found an obscure Australian musician thanks to the show, and their use of Our House by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young is how I found the song after not knowing the band for years.

A while back, I was watching The Big C, and a song by Ingrid Michaelson came on that I'd been listening to for a couple months. And I've had a habit of finding an awesome indie song, listening to the rest of their music, not liking it so much and keeping the one song in my regular rotation - only to learn it was on Scrubs at one point or another.
