Then they are capes, or masks, or whatever non-superhero word you want to use to describe the genre. That was the point of my post was that they don't have to be heroes to fit in that genre. Goku kind of fits this, if you stretch a bit.

If someone came to me and wanted to read comics but said they didn't want to read superheroes, I wouldn't recommend Suicide Squad because it is the same concept, but darker in tone. "Not a superhero" is a well established subgenre within superhero comics.

there's plenty of superhero mercenaries in Marvel and DC, so that can't be right. we've got people who literally became superheroes because of fighting, that goes down to Captain America. X-Men have multiple teams entirely around fighting, some more extreme than that and straight into black ops with people who quite like to fight.

then we've got anti-heroes, a group who would still generally be put under the "superhero" label if broken down. all in all, this can't be a qualification. i'm pretty sure there's martial artists that seemingly only exist to fight or train who are superheroes, though i'm not sure how much backstory randomly is in there for the few that come to mind.

These characters work because they have context in a world where heroes exist. And within that world, they're not even always referred to as heroes. We just refer to them as superheroes because of the context since it's easier and more of a genre than anything else. For example if I was describing Suicide Squad to someone who had no idea who they were, I'd describe them as a superhero team because they are in the genre even though they aren't heroes.

I would lean towards Goku not being a superhero since his motivations are neutral at best, but he's close enough to what I'd consider one because of the setting and style. But people like Guts or Edward Elric are not. They'really just fantasy protagonists.

So question, has anyone had the hostage negotiations or demon escape happen frequently? I'm on hard and I've had them both happen once in 4 dungeons (and mementos) and I could just use Thieves's Guild on them. They seem like interesting mechanics, but at least on Hard it almost never happens. The enemies are much more likely to just murder me.

I'm having trouble with Palace 4, definitely the hardest one yet.

Pretty sure everything in 4 has a weakness except Anubis, so it's just a matter of finding them. For Anubis you just have to use statuses to get it to waste its turn while you beat them down. Rage helps with lowering its defense too.

The hardest part of the third palace was enemies not having traditional weaknesses, including the Onis that had no weaknesses period. Without a Persona with Bless / Curse, thing could get hairy. Some of the mini bosses were a tad rough as well.

Boss itself was pretty straight forward.

Marin Karlin is op as shit on them. They murder whatever else you are fighting and then just sit there once everything else is dead. Minibosses that summon enemies vulnerable to it are hilarious because they just give you another party member. Sleep is OK too if you just need to not deal with one for a few rounds. Confuse is also strong. And everyone else covered the other statuses.


Thanks for reminding me about the stupid plant. I did it once or twice and thought "wow this is really good" and then forgot about it because....being nice is for chumps I guess? But now I need it so I'm the chump.

Sometimes you just have to accept your deck has a shitty matchup or two. You can at least play a deck that is good against decks that are good against Quest Rogue.

Ryuji does feel a little cartoonishly dumb but I think he's still likeable. He's just not realistically dumb like Junpei, or just an asshole like Yosuke. He's the edgiest, angriest teen in a game about edgy, angry teens. His character makes total sense even if it's not too exciting.

The only problem is when the writers need someone to be stupid for plot to happen, and it's always him. But I think that also falls on him because he's the most proactive member of the team.

Patron Warrior back in the day also had a >50% winrate on ladder. It was absolutely the best deck (and cheap!), so more people play it. But those people don't necessarily know how to play the deck optimally. Caverns has a similar issue where it's not necessarily linear and can have weird lines of play.

In this case I don't even think Caverns Rogue is the best deck, but Reddit spent a solid 48 hours circlejerking that it was, and the thread complaining about it is still stickied, so people still think it is.

Some of those minibosses though, geez, they put up a surprisingly good effort. shoutouts to the one where i switched my persona on my first turn, only for him to move immediately after and use that persona's weakness.

I did Palace 3 last night, the minibosses really impressed me. Sometimes they have weaknesses and you can brute force it, but it's still very tough. Other times you have to use status effects. I cannot believe how fucking good statuses are in this game. Marin Karin is godlike now; if only that had been the case in Persona 3 people wouldn't have hated the AI.

Does anyone make use of the shopping mall gifts? This game is pretty money hungry so I haven't gone out of my way to buy any. And IIRC I've only had one hangout where they wouldn't rank up next visit (not counting Hierophant), so I don't even know if they help.

That also reminds me I still haven't paid the fortune teller....but I gotta spend all my money on that sweet Temperance link instead.

But the battle themes are fine. It's the town themes I really don't care for, and that's most of what you listen to. The version of the night song with vocals is the only one I love.

the third dungeon music is fucking great

I haven't been feeling the soundtrack in this game AS much as P3/P4's, but it's still solid. The tracks are just more hit or miss for me, I guess.

Oh but speaking of P3/P4 soundtracks, I like that the music for the movies and TV shows are really short loops of old music. It's pretty fun trying to figure out which song it's supposed to be.

The points. He is there and I can talk to him to hang out but it specifically says it won't be a rank up so I go to make coffee instead and get the points but he just leaves for the night. Same for if he won't hang out with me and I want to make it since I cleared the second palace.

Yeah this started happening to me too. I basically savescum to see if he'll show up and reset if he doesn't. I wish there was an obvious way to tell.

I appreciate that nights are so loaded with things to do after P3 which had next to nothing and P4 which felt even worse, but I always feel like I'm wasting my night no matter what I do.

Most that I've seen are running Lyra + Elise. Elise + Shadow Visions to discover the pack in the late game and get value against Control. Lyra has a Tony like effect except it comes out way earlier and you could get radiant elemental to get a bunch of spell chains going.

That's a lot of expensive cards I don't have so I'll sit on it for now, but that Elise/Visions combo sounds incredible.

Kripp's list kind of the same, I don't have Umbra or Thalnos.

Add me to the Hunter convert list. Played a quick 5 games last night and went 5-0. People just aren't expecting to get hit in the face by a midrange Hunter.

I don't have a second Stampede so I'm running the Dinomancy I got as a fun-of. It's been good when I've drawn into it. I don't have Rat Pack but that would make it even better.

I didn't HATE it but the second palace story stuff was pretty underwhelming compared to the first. I'm hoping Yusuke gets better but he does seem pretty bland. And agreed that his outfit is horrible; that's enough reason to avoid using him.

I got two rampage users but it still feels like I'm just racing time until he decides to randomly hit weaknesses. A complete lack of good healing and multi-target (de)buffs just makes me feel like there's no real strategy to it.

You trade tempo on one turn for a huge tempo loss the next turn. That means your tempo on the first turn needs to be INCREDIBLE to make up for it. That makes a card having bad stats even worse. Feral Spirits was bad...until it meant that it also dealt 2 damage and protected your strong 1 drop on the same turn. That's really the same point I'm making. Messing up your curve and potential plays next turn just makes poor statting more noticeable. You get stuff like midrange Shaman dropping Flamewreathed Faceless because it opened them up to removal and caused a loss in tempo. Aggro Shaman obviously doesn't care about this because they just need an initial boost and will still be able to play cards next turn to make up for it.

Overload has always been a bad mechanic both in terms of power and game design. The drawback is so severe that cards have to be extremely powerful to be worth it (Totem Golem, Crackle with RNG, 4 mana 7/7), and the ones that aren't are underwhelming. Either way it's not interesting. Tunnel Trogg just bumped enough junk up to reasonable status to make it worth running those mediocre cards like Lightning Bolt, Feral Spirits, and Stormcrack. It was the only thing making it any good!

Just play Eternal then. It's Actual Knockoff MTG instead of Wacky Knockoff MTG (or in Shadowverse's case, Anime Knockoff Wacky Knockoff MTG) so you get to interact on your opponent's turn and declare blockers. I dabbled with it while waiting for Un'goro and it seemed solid and very generous with free rewards.

If you buy the TV from the vendor near the coffee shop, you can rent movies that increase stats. The X Files knockoff improves Guts.

Also I think you can visit the juice bar in the walkway in Shibuya every Sunday and pay money to get a stat up point each week. It's expensive but doesnt use time. I missed like 4 weeks

Sojirou's early rank ups are nonsense, yeah. Even with a Hierophant in the party, we're talking like 10 or 12 notes between Lv 3 and 4. Dunno if that continues to be a problem, but I can say with certain you it's not a date thing, and you aren't wasting your time. You DEFINATELY want a Hiero in the party, but that goes for every social link.

Pretty sure I had one at the time but either way it seemed absurd enough for me to question it. I know I've since gotten rid of it. I'm really feeling the early game Persona slot limit, especially with garbage like the treasure demon currently sitting in my slots until I level up enough to fuse something good.

I got the 5th party member. It's ironic how they seem to be completely useless for their own dungeon just because I seem to be locked out of doing the social link until I beat it. I'm not giving up Baton Pass!

There are things that prevent you from progressing ranks besides just the relationship points.

Yeah, it does. He's only rank 2. But when I made coffee, he got the little note points when he showed up. I figured I could multitask, but you must need a lot of coffee to make up for a normal hangout.

Man the Rogue quest interests me too now but I'd have to craft both it and Patches. Same problem with the Warlock quest deck. Don't want to craft two legendaries, so I'll wait and see.

In the meantime, I crafted two Blazecaller to go along with my Kalimos to play Standard for the quest. I also opened one 7 mana 4/4 but idk if I want to craft another and have 7 drops and 2 8 drops in my deck. Elemental Shaman seems very solid, but the early game leaves a lot to be desired. All I have for turn 1/2 drops are Fire Fly, FPH, and a single Kobold Geomancer (I am a loser who does not have Thalnos). None of these are great...maybe I need Spirit Claws? But relying on totem seems bad.

74 packs, got 4 legendaries (Kalimos, Hemet, Awaken the Makers...x2), 17 epics. Missing 10 rares for the full playset. Not bad. Awaken was the Quest I most wanted so I'm happy, even if the game is mocking me for it.

You know who's harder than the first dungeon boss? The miniboss you fight as part of the second quest. Lucky punch does "minimal" damage my ass. And high crit rate felt like 95%.

Though, part of that is my own fault....Morgana dies so much for me that I didn't have Media yet.

I really need to find something with Sukunda. Not having full debuff access is irritating me as well.

It's brought up now because Aftermath cards are split cards, and now Expertise + split cards will be in Standard. It sounds like they got feedback from judges and didn't want to deal with that headache until those sets both rotate.

It really sucks since there were entire decks built around it. It's obviously a better rule, but I think it's something they should have changed much earlier. Especially considering they would have known that combo would be in standard a year or two before set release.
